About Northern Nicosia: North Nicosia or Northern Nicosia (Turkish: Kuzey Lefkoşa kuˈzej lefˈkoʃa; Greek: Βόρεια Λευκωσία) is the capital and largest city of the de facto state of Northern Cyprus. It is the northern part of the divided city of Nicosia and is governed by the Nicosia Turkish Municipality. As of 2011, North Nicosia had a population of 61,378 and a metropolitan area with a population of 82,539. Following the intercommunal violence of the 1960s, the capital of Republic of Cyprus was divided between the islands Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities in the south and north respectively in 1963. Travel Diaries | İzmir in January, my 35th birthday
In the middle of January, i decided to take a trip to my birthplace - izmir - because it was my 35th birthday coming along. Because I will be 35 years old, I wanted to spend my birthday in the city where I was born 35 years ago to celebrate it in a special way. With a friend from work, we took the Izmir Blue Train from Ankara to Izmir. We stayed at the PTT Guesthouse in Konak. We toured Karşıyaka on the first day, and wandered around central places such as Konak and Alsancak on the next two days. We didn't set a very tight schedule for ourselves, we didn't want to force ourselves to run around and see everything. We wanted to taste the flavors that we were more curious about, and at the same time enjoy being in a city very different from the city we live in. However, the weather was extremely cold, on top of the unpredictable wind and cold of İzmir, it was a trip for me that I did not enjoy a bit because I was sick the next day we went, but whatever. See you on the next trip where I can shoot more professionally and travel comfortably in a warmer weather!

Ocak ayının ortasında doğumgünüm vardı, 35 yaşıma basacağım için bu sene, özel bir şekilde kutlamak için 35 yıl önce doğduğum şehirde geçirmek istedim doğumgünümü. İş yerinden bir arkadaşımla Ankara'dan İzmir Mavi Tren'ine binip, İzmir'e gittik. Konak'taki PTT Misafirhanesi'nde kaldık. İlk gün Karşıyaka'yı gezdik, sonraki iki gün Konak ve Alsancak gibi merkezi yerlerde dolaştık. Kendimize çok sıkı bir program çıkarmamıştık, oradan oraya koşturup, her şeyi görelim diye kendimizi zorlamak istemedik. Daha çok merak ettiğimiz lezzetleri tadalım, bir yandan da yaşadığımız şehirden çok farklı bir şehirde olmanın keyfini çıkaralım istedik. Ancak hava aşırı soğuktu, İzmir'in tahmin edemediğimiz rüzgarı ve soğuğu üstüne bir de gittiğimizin ertesi günü hasta olduğum için biraz keyif alamadığım bir gezi oldu benim için ama olsun. Daha profesyonelce çekebileceğim, daha sıcak bir havada rahat rahat gezebileceğim bir sonraki gezide görüşmek üzere!

The United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus is a demilitarized zone, patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), that was established in 1964 and extended in 1974 after the ceasefire of 16 August 1974, following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and the de facto partition of the island into the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus (excluding the British Sovereign Base Areas) and the largely unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. The zone, also known as the Green Line (Greek: Πράσινη Γραμμή, Prasini Grammi; Turkish: Yeşil Hat), stretches for 180 kilometres (112 miles) from Paralimni in the east to Kato Pyrgos in the west, where a separate section surrounds Kokkina.

The dividing line is also referred to as the Attila Line, named after Turkey's 1974 military intervention, codenamed Operation Attila. The Turkish army has built a barrier on the zone's northern side, consisting mainly of barbed-wire fencing, concrete wall segments, watchtowers, anti-tank ditches, and minefields. The zone cuts through the centre of Nicosia, separating the city into southern and northern sections. In total, it spans an area of 346 square kilometres (134 sq mi), varying in width from less than 20 metres (66 ft) to more than 7 kilometres (4.3 mi). After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Nicosia remains the last divided capital in Europe. Some 10,000 people live in several villages and work on farms located within the zone; the village of Pyla is famous for being one of the few remaining villages in Cyprus where Greek and Turkish Cypriots still live side by side. Other villages are Deneia, Athienou, and Troulloi. Some areas are untouched by human interference and have remained a safe haven for flora and fauna.

Collette and Amanda at The Venetian Column - In North Cyprus
The Venetian Column is almost impossible to miss as you drive/walk in to the Walled City from the Kyrenia Gate. The column is located in the centre of Ataturk Square, also known as Sarayonu.
To be honest, I personally walked past this majestic column for almost 4 years without ever knowing its name or significance to North Cyprus. I just knew that it was a great place to sit under the shades, provided by the nearby cafes, and rest your feet. Usually you will find people sitting nearby feeding the countless pigeons that flock the base of the column. However once I learned its history it made me appreciate it more.
According to the North Cyprus Tourism Centre, in 1489, the column was moved from Salamis to Nicosia as a tribute to the Venetian rule in Cyprus. On top of the granite column was a carving of the lion of St. Mark, and at the bottom were the coats of arms of noble Venetian families. Later on in 1570, the Ottomans removed the lion and toppled the column. It wasn’t re-erected until 1915 by the British, who were still at war with the Ottoman Empire. The replace the St. Mark Lion with a bronze orb, that still sits on top of the column today.
So when you are in North Cyprus make sure you stop by, take some pictures and maybe even feed some pigeons.
