TOP 10 TOURISTIC SITES OF CAMEROON. #tourism #tourafrica #tourcameroon

Tourism in Cameroon is a growing but relatively minor industry. Since the 1970s, the government of Cameroon has cultivated the industry by creating a ministry of tourism and by encouraging investment by airlines, hotels, and travel agencies. The government describes the country as Africa in miniature, promoting its diversity of climate, culture, and geography. Cameroon's wildlife draws both safari-goers and big-game hunters, as Cameroon is home to many of Africa's iconic animals: cheetahs, chimpanzees, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, hippopotami, and rhinoceroses. Impediments to further growth of the tourism sector include poor transport infrastructure and corrupt officials who may harass visitors for bribes.

Tourists face several obstacles in Cameroon. Photography is difficult, since Cameroonians often resent foreigners taking photographs of things that outsiders may consider strange or that may cast Cameroon in a negative light. The government forbids all photography of government buildings and personnel, airports, bridges, and markets

Treatment of tourists by Cameroonian officials has improved as the role of tourism as a source of revenue has been emphasised by the government. Tourists once faced long, thorough searches upon arrival in the country, but these have become rare.
Still, police or gendarmes sometimes accuse foreign tourists of spying or carrying out mercenary activities.
This is especially true for tourists who visit sites off the main tourist routes or who opt for cheap accommodation or public transport (e.g., mini-buses) over fancier hotels and rental cars. Police and gendarmes at roadblocks may harass foreign visitors for bribes.

Top 10 Tourist Destinations in Cameroon

1. Yaounde
West Africa may not be known for beautiful cities but Cameroon’s capital Yaounde certainly is one. The city is immaculately planned to be spread over seven hills meaning that the numerous buildings in the city are separated by stretches of lush green and rising terrain. In addition to its layout, the city is clean and safe with plenty of points of interest. The 1970’s government buildings here will appeal to culture buffs and are unusual looking to say the least. Given the central location of Yaounde it is also a perfect city to include in any tour of the country.

2. Maroua
Nowhere near as lush and green, Maroua still has an appeal of its own. The streets are remarkably red, sandy and dusty and the buildings are a dull beige colour but the colours of the locals clothing brings plenty of colour to the city. Maroua is a great place to experience the culture of Cameroon and its bustling markets are some of the best in the country. The city is also a great base for travllers wishing to visit the Mandara Mountains in the north of the country.

3. Limbe
Occupying the slopes of Mount Cameroon, an active volcanic mountain, Limbe is a city that acts as a great base for travellers who are looking to explore the beauty of the area. The botanical gardens in the city are a great place to learn about the nature and plants in the area before exploring the nearby waterfalls and national park. The mountain itself has a summit height of over 4,000m and is therefore a serious challenge but walks for novices are still possible around the base of the mountain without making a full ascent.

4. Douala
Douala has a reputation for being a bit grimey and insalubrious but this should not put you off visiting. This is the major city in Cameroon in most aspects; the airport is the biggest in the country, as is the port and the business centre here is the main one in the country. All of these hubs result in a chaotic and overactive feel and it is likely that you will not relax much whilst you are here. With that being said however the city is a great place to witness modern Cameroon and the few charms it offers.

5. Waza National Park
About 180 miles to the north of Maroua is Waza National Park. This park looks very different during the four seasons but is always a good place to witness some of the country’s most spectacular wildlife including elephants, giraffes and hyenas. Self-drive vehicles are allowed to explore the park but you will need a guide. This is not necarasilly a bad thing as you are much more likely to see the wildlife with a local guide that knows their stuff.

6. Bamenda
Bamenda holds the title of being the capital of Cameroon’s north-west and is a large city with all the amenities and facilities needed by travellers. The city of Bamenda is not likely to keep you interested for more than a day or two but Bamenda is a great place to reach the country’s highlands which offer beautiful lush scenery and hidden villages. The surrounding landscape is a great place for mountain biking, hiking and finding some off the radar guesthouses and restaurants.

7. Foumban
For art lovers, Foumban is a must-see city in Cameroon. The city has its roots in arts, music and architecture. It is also the city in Cameroon with the largest Muslim population. The city is much like a blend of North and West Africa with its Islamic influences. The Royal Palace and its adjoining museum is the main attraction here although the city’s mosque is also worth a visit while you are here.

8. Bafoussam
Although at first glance this city can seem busy and uninspiring, it will reward those who choose to explore. The people here are very friendly and welcoming to tourists and the palace here is a great, if not the best, example of a Royal Palace in Cameroon. The accommodation in the city is affordable and there are some true hidden gems to be found. The main tourist attraction is the tribal museum in the city which is part of the “Four Museums of Cameroon” project.

9. Kribi
This is the home of paradise in Cameroon. The beaches here are stunning with white sand, blue sea and fresh fish served from the restaurants lining the seafront. There are plenty of hotels in the Kribi area and most are reasonably priced. If after lounging by the beach all day you are looking for something different to do, the Chutes de la Lobe waterfalls are just 8km due south from the town. The waterfalls cascade directly into the sea forming a truly memorable sight.

10. Korup National Park
Korup National Park is a vast area, comprising 126,000 hectares of evergreen forest. The park is well maintained with resident scientists and well-marked trails. Many species of birds can be found in the park including hornbills and the extremely rare red headed rockfowl. Visitors to the park may even be lucky enough to see elephants or chimps although these are rare. The road access to the park can be tricky especially in the wet months when the road conditions deteriorate.

Travel Guide: Top 10 Things to do in CAMERON HIGHLAND, Malaysia

in this video I'm gonna take you to the best places to visit in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.

1 - BOH TEA PLANTATION

Boh Tea is the largest producer of tea in Malaysia, with estates in Cameron Highlands and Bukit Cheeding (Selangor). The largests plantation sits at Habu in Ringlet next to its immediate neighbour Fairlie Garden, while Sungai Palas lies about 20km away in Brinchang. At Ringlet, visitors may access Boh via an exit along the main road at right towards Tanah Rata.

One of Cameron's favourite tourist attractions, the plantation features a colonial-era processing factory open to public, heritage tea center with shopping gallery and a delightful cafe that serves refreshments. A small hill next door provides a panoramic view point of the valley draped by lush tea fields, if you're willing to brave a steep climb. Boh Tea at Habu opens daily from 9am to 4.30pm except Mondays.

2 - FLORA PARK

Located in Kea Farm, Cameron Flora Park is only a 6-minute walk from The Sheep Sanctuary and less than a 5-minute drive from Copthorne Hotel. Every corner of this brand new garden will feature all kinds of colourful flowers, offering a visual treat for the eyes! Different walkways are available throughout the place for visitors to roam, snap photos and admire the gorgeous blooms.

The garden will officially be open to the public on 1 November 2021. If you'll be making a trip to Cameron Highlands by then, make sure to swing by and give your social feed an aesthetic makeover.

Take your visit to Cameron Flora Park to the next level by having an amazing picnic amidst a sea of beautiful flowers as your backdrop. 3 - HIGHLAND GRILL AND CHEESE STEAMBOAT

The best steamboat Restaurant in Cameron Highlands, and it is halal.

4 - MOSSY FOREST

The mossy forest is a natural environment that grows only at the highest elevations of Cameron Highlands and other mountain ranges across Malaysia. At such heights, low-level clouds in the sky driven by winds, blanket the forests with constant mist and moisture - creating an ideal biotope for moss, ferns, lichen and orchids.

This moist tropical evergreen forest is also a rich repository for a varied set of montane creatures, encompassing insects, snakes, frogs, birds and mammals unique to this chilly atmosphere. Visitors may explore the mossy forest through a boardwalk 2km before the peak of Gunung Brinchang, accessible by road from the Boh Tea Sungai Palas intersection.

5 - SHEEP SANCTURY

The Sheep Sanctuary is located right in the middle of the busy Kea Farm market. There is a huge signage at the entrance with a cartoon sheep on it, chances of you missing them are next to none.

To visit The Sheep Sanctuary, you would need to pay an entrance fee of RM8 for adult and RM4 for children ages 4 - 12 years old. The entrance fee also includes a small box of food for you to feed the sheep.

6 - VISIT THE BRINCHAN LOCAL MARKET

he Night Market is a local bazaar that occurs every Friday till Sunday at Golden Hills, a residential and commercial development in Tanah Rata. Also known as 'Pasar Malam', this local weekend shopping attraction begins as early as 4pm and ends as late as 11pm, but rainy weather affects these hours. Originally based in Brinchang, the new location is accessible along the main road near Hotel Casa dela Rosa.

7 - TAKE SOME PICTURES AT SMOKE HOUSE

Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highlands is located in Tanah Rata. Cameron Highland Golf Club and The Sheep Sanctuary are worth checking out if an activity is on the agenda, while those looking for area attractions can visit Orang Asli Settlement and Mossy Forest. Cameron Highland Butterfly Farm and Ee Feng Gu Bee Farm are also worth visiting.

8 - PICK YOU OWN STRAWBERRIES

EQ Strawberry Farm is located at Kea Farm in Brinchang, located along the main road right after Copthorne Hotel. Nestled along a hill slope, the entrance descends sharply into a market place where visitors may peruse souvenirs, honey, crops, herbs, organic mushrooms, sugar-free jam and other local products. Further in, there is a small cafe that serves refreshments before the walkway leads to the farm area, open for strawberry picking activities. Open daily from morning till evening, the farm is free to enter.

Discover YAOUNDÉ: The Capital City of CAMEROON | 10 INTERESTING FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT!

Yaoundé, also spelled Yaunde, is the city and capital of Cameroon. It is situated on a hilly, forested plateau between the Nyong and Sanaga rivers in the south-central part of the country. It is the second largest city in Cameroon, after Douala, with a population of over 4 million people. Lying in the center region of the nation at an elevation of 750 meters above sea level, the city has a tropical climate

Yaoundé is built on a mountainous area surrounded by seven hills hence its nickname - the city of seven hills. Some geographers have added Yaoundé to the famous list of cities of seven hills, among cities like Paris, Rome, Lisbon, Washington and Pretoria. It is a city offering a touristic site filled with valleys, plateaus and hills. Just like these other cities, Yaounde not only has these hills but many more. Several narratives exist for this.

In many African countries, a capital city is both an economic and political capital. This is not the case for Cameroon. The nation has ‘2 capitals’;
Yaounde - The administrative center and political capital
Douala - Biggest city in Cameroon and the economic capital

A city of more than 4 million people, Yaounde is the center of political power and the capital of Cameroon. The city is located in the Center province and stretches along the small river Mfoundi, which flows through the city from North to South. It is located on the homeland of the Ewondo and Eton peoples ( Members of the large ethnic group Fang-Beti).

Most of Yaoundé's economy is centered on the administrative structure of the civil service and the diplomatic services. Owing to these high-profile central structures, Yaounde has a higher standard of living and security than the rest of Cameroon.
The city center houses government offices, several hotels and the central market. The Bastos district-a neighborhood in Yaounde with most homes owned by Cameroonians, is home to foreign embassies and the expatriate European, American and other continental communities. The presidential palace and compound are in the Etoudi district.

Unity Palace is a public building in Cameroon. Unity Palace is situated nearby the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and African Model Forest Network. It is a great marvel of architectural lines with towering pillars supporting its walls. Located in the northern districts of Yaounde. It was designed by French-Tunisian architect Olivier Clement Cacoub.

The palace sits in the middle of the complex which spreads over several hectares above a hill originally belonging to the Etoud, an indegenous group in Cameroon. The palace is a vast complex housing the residence and offices of the head of state of Cameroon. It is currently the official residence of President Paul Biya who has been in power since 1982. Wikipedia writes, ‘He is the second longest ruling president in Africa, oldest head of state in Africa and the longest ruling non-royal leader in the world.’

Cameroon’s Reunification monument was built in the 1970s. It was constructed to memorialize the post-colonial merging of British and French Cameroon, that is, Anglophone and Francophone parts. Designed by architects Engelbert Mveng, Atelier Arts Negre and Gedeon Mpondo, it is located in Yaounde. Another reunification monument is located in Mamfe, a city in a division of the Southwest region in Cameroon.

One writer says, ‘ President Ahmadou Ahidjo and the public authorities commissioned this landmark as a celebration of the Cameroonian people’s prosperity in the aftermath of Independence. The history of this unification is important for education because it brings together the historical memory of approximately 200-250 ethnic groups living together in the Republic of Cameroon, a mosaic of cultures committed to sharing a common life.’ Go up its winding staircase and consider scribbling something on its walls like others before leaving! You will also have a spectacular view of the city from here and might just be part of an outdoor event on the beautiful grounds below.

2. HOW TO GET TO CAMERON HIGHLANDS

So, how do we get to Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur? The only access to the highlands is by road. It takes roughly about 3.5 - 4 hours drive from KL. There are basically 3 ways of getting there; (a) by bus, (b) booking a tour or (c) driving yourself.

(a) Taking a Bus
- From TBS, (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands.
- One-way tickets cost about RM 35
- If you book online through the RedBus website ( there’s even an option to pick your seats and insurance coverage. (We're not sponsored but Redbus is the one that we frequently use for our travels)

(b) Booking a tour
- Hassle-free
- Most tour packages include transportation, a full-day itinerary, and an English-speaking tour guide. You can also approach your hotels and tourist information centers for more information.

(c) Driving
- There are 2 main routes to get there from the North-South Expressway.
- Option 1: by taking the Tapah Exit 132/Route 59. It is a shorter route hence faster but the road is very windy and narrow.
- Option 2: by taking the Simpang Pulai Exit 137/Route 185 (which is the route that we took). It is a slightly longer route, but the road is much straighter and more comfortable to drive on. Highly recommend especially if you have motion sickness. (30 minutes longer)

3. WHERE TO STAY IN CAMERON HIGHLANDS

There are 2 main areas in Cameron Highlands that the majority of the hotels are located; Tanah Rata and Brinchang.

➡️Where we stayed:
????Century Pines Resort

- Tanah Rata:
Main administrative town, there are many shops, banks, tour agents, eateries and a bus terminal, which is where the buses from KL would stop. It is more commercialized here compared to Brinchang.

- Brinchang:
Second largest town after Tanah Rata. You’ll find the main center of Brinchang more densely developed compared to Tanah Rata with many apartments, shophouses and public buildings clustered closely together. There’s also the other side of Brinchang that’s closer to farms, tourist attractions, and nature.

Overall, there is a wide range of accommodations available in Cameron Highlands; you can find anything from budget homestays to mid-range and luxury hotels with a golf course attached to it. Some places even offer unique experiences like colonial-era bungalows, mini chalets, and a farm stay.

4. CAMERON HIGHLANDS TRAVEL TIPS:
#1 The Weather/Seasons
- very windy and cold especially morning and night. We do suggest bringing along a jacket.
- sunny at noon, do apply sunscreen

#2 Traffic Jams & Peak Periods
- Can get crowded and traffic jams are very common, especially during weekends, school holidays and festive seasons.

#3 Stay Duration
A day trip would be enough to cover the main attractions, whereas at least staying a night or two is preferred for a more relaxed trip.
