But its best-kept secret is the restaurant’s cake shake. Insider's Medha Imam visited Portillo’s Summit, IL location to learn what goes into making the iconic cake shake. Portillo’s is a fast-casual restaurant chain that many call the one-stop shop for iconic Chicago foods. It has a world-famous chocolate cake, an Italian beef sandwich, cheese fries, a chicken croissant, and a chopped salad. The most popular menu item is the restaurant’s Chicago-style hot dog, topped with mustard, relish, onions, sliced tomato, pickles, peppers, and celery salt. Insider's Herrine Ro visited the downtown Portillo’s location to learn about what goes into the hot dog and find out from customers why they think the Portillo’s hot dog is the most legendary in the city. Garrett's Makes Chicago's Most Iconic Popcorn | Legendary Eats
Popcorn is Illinois' official snack food, and Garrett Popcorn has been serving some of the best handcrafted popcorn in the state since 1949. The secret family recipe that's been handed down over three generations is still made in old-fashioned copper kettles with kernels that are grown just for the company. Garrett's handcrafts its popcorn in small batches throughout the day and can make anywhere from 30 to 150 batches daily. The famous Garrett mix consists of a mix of its CheeseCorn and CaramelCrisp flavors, creating a perfect blend of savory and sweet. There's almost always a line at all Garrett Popcorn shops, so Insider's Medha Imam visited one to see how the iconic mix is made and why it's one of Oprah's Favorite Things.

With how ubiquitous Italian beef sandwiches are in Chicago, it's hard to pick just one. But the line outside Johnnie's Beef and its #1 rankings on several best lists are a good indication that this spot is one of the Windy City's favorites.
According to Eater, Johnnie's Italian beef sandwich is considered by many to be the shining standard that others strive to achieve. Other publications, customers, and critics agree for several reasons. The meat is well-seasoned with an array of secret spices. It's sliced thin and accompanied by either sweet peppers or giardiniera loaded with crunchy carrots, celery, and chiles. Customers who order it dipped get a generous helping of gravy that's sure to be absorbed by the plush French bread holding all that beefy goodness together.
