10 Things To Do in Brunei on your Summer Vacation!

✅Best-Selling travel gear
???? Deals

Located on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Brunei, the smallest nonisland country outside Europe, is a peaceful Muslim country blessed with vast reserves of oil and beautiful rainforest full of wildlife.

Welcome to ThingsToDo Channel, today we’re going to list the top 10 things to do in Brunei.

See some of southeast Asia’s most stunning mosques.

Brunei is famous in Southeast Asia for its gorgeous mosques and Islamic architecture. In Bandar Seri Begawan, both the Omar Ali Saifuddien and Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosques are huge attractions.

Experience the spectacular Bornean sunset.

Borneo’s sunsets are some of the most spectacular on Earth. The persistent clouds towards the horizon create a plethora of reds, oranges and purples as the sun dips out of sight. Just like the beaches in Sabah and Sarawak, you can witness this incredible phenomenon in Brunei. We suggest visiting either Penanjong or Muara Beach.

Get lost on the world’s largest floating village.

Stand on the waterfront and admire the sprawling stilted buildings across the river. Ferries and speedboats zoom between the mainland and Kampong Ayer. Known as the ‘Venice of the East’, the water village houses approximately 13,000 permanent residents.

Explore Brunei’s Virgin Rainforest.

Unlike neighboring Malaysia and Indonesia, Brunei’s jungle is free of deforestation. The off-shore oil reserves have made the Sultanate wealthy without the need to chop down trees for timber or palm oil plantations. Ulu Temburong National Park provides visitors with a chance to visit a section of this virgin rainforest. Only 1% is open with strictly regulated access. Visiting the national park offers one of the best ecotourism-related activities to do in Brunei.

Immerse yourself in the Culture of Brunei.

As of 2018, many of Brunei’s attractions are free to enter. Why not take advantage and explore some of the museums in Bandar Seri Begawan? We recommend the Royal Regalia to learn more about the Sultan and his extravagant lifestyle. The Brunei Museum covers natural history, ethnography, and exhibits on their British colonial days. Visiting museums might not feature on everyone’s list of things to do in Brunei, but it does offer a chance to learn about this little-known country.

Spot probosci's monkeys.

Probosci's monkeys, named after their unusual nose, are endemic to Borneo. The strange pot-bellied primates like to sit in the mangroves. If you’re in Bandar Seri Begawan, you can take a safari in search of the monkeys. Or head to Taman Persiaran Damuan Park and try to spot some in the trees on the river island.

Dine Like a Local at Pasar Gadong.

Pasar Gadong, or Gadong Market, sits a few kilometers north of the waterfront. Every day at 4:00 pm, dozens of stalls serve local food. Located under the tent-like roof, you can find a variety of rice and noodle-based dishes. Other favorites include satay (Malaysian-style kebabs), grilled and barbequed fish and beef. For an alternative dining experience compared to eating at a restaurant in Bandar Seri Begawan, check out the night market.

Experience Brunei’s Wild Side at Andulau Forest Reserve.

The Andulau Forest Reserve is approximately halfway between Sarawak’s Miri and Bandar Seri Begawan. With a network of muddy rivers, waterfalls, and hundreds of monkeys, a day trip to this part of the country promises to be a treat. Either visit as a stopover when passing between Miri and Brunei or take a tour from the capital. Tours usually combine a trip to the reserve by visiting the nearby Iban longhouses.

See the nodding donkeys.

Nodding donkeys are the strange contraptions used to extract underground oil. The small town of Seria along Brunei’s northern coast was the birthplace of the nation’s booming oil industry and is littered with the structures. A monument commemorates the production of Brunei’s billionth barrel of oil too. This isn’t one of the more conventional things to do in Brunei, but it will help you understand the industry driving the country’s wealth.

Shop to your heart’s content.

Because of Brunei’s lower tax levels, shopping for electronics and other products is often cheaper than in neighboring countries. With a relatively strong currency and a predominately middle-class population, the citizens demand the latest technology. If you’re in Bander Seri Begawan on a stopover, check out the malls and see what bargains you can find.

What to see in Brunei?

It doesn’t matter if you are traveling though Malaysian part of Borneo or deciding to go to Brunei as the main travel destination. In both scenarios this video is for you! Today we are deciding what to see in Brunei.

When you think about nice travel destination you don’t really think about Brunei. The main reason is that you simply haven’t heard a lot about the country. Did you know that it’s one of the wealthiest countries in the World?

The country is really small and unfortunately I need to admit, there is not that much to see. Some people say that you need only two days to see all top places in Brunei. Others even say that you need one day in Brunei. One of the wealthiest countries in the World and yet, you don’t see it on the streets. Brunei seems like any other Asian country.

Since we were coming from Miri the first stop on our way was Kuala Belait. On the first day our host gave us a tour around the city which lasted… 10 minutes… and that was it. Once Kuala Belait check out the mosque and go to the beach!

Two days later we hit the road again and headed towards the capital of Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan. The capital of the country is also relatively small. You can see all tourist attractions within one day. Once in the city make sure to go to Water Village, Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah - Brunei's Largest Mosque.

Even though you will not find many tourist attractions in Brunei, the country is worth visiting once you are on Borneo. People here are extremely friendly - I don’t think I have met nicer people anywhere in the World.

With a steady population of more than a million people, Brunei is undoubtedly one of Southeast Asia's top destinations. Most visitors to this tropical island are from Europe and North America. However, even countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia have come here regularly for business and leisure. What makes Brunei so attractive is its geographical location: it lies between the Celebes and the Gulf of Thailand. It is situated right in the center of an Indian Ocean sea. Brunei Tourism | Best Places to Visit in Brunei | Bandar Seri Begawan

Brunei has long been synonymous with opulence and oil money. And, in fact, there’s little that immediately counteracts that image in this nation of shimmering whitewashed mosques and golden-tipped minarets. In the west and all around the well-to-do capital at Bandar Seri Begawan, you’ll see nodding donkeys and the industrial workings of the sultanate’s petroleum industry. You’ll spot rich arabesque palaces and ambitious building projects erupting on every corner.

But let’s not forget that this is Borneo either; and with Borneo comes real wildernesses. We’re talking dense rainforests and volcanic peaks. We’re talking rustic villages of longhouses and the occasional sighting of an uber-rare clouded leopard! Granted, you’ll have to head deep into the southern or eastern recesses of the nation for those, but there are always – tantalizingly – there.

So, with everything from buzzing markets to monkey-trodden jungles, check out this list of the best places to visit in Brunei:
1. Bandar Seri Begawan
Bandar Seri Begawan (or just BSB) is perhaps the most richly-adorned capital you’ve never heard of.

Home to just 50,000 people, it’s a pint-sized lesson in how oil money can change the world.

Having been transformed in the last century, from a seaside trading town to the gilded epicenter of drilling and home of the great Sultan of Brunei, the town hosts wondrous – if a tad gaudy – sights like the gold-tipped Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the colossal Istana Nurul Iman, which holds the world record for the largest governmental building on the globe.
2. Ulu Temburong National Park
The revered Green Jewel of Brunei, Ulu Temburong sits nestled deep in the recesses of the country’s eastern exclave.

A veritable mecca for ecotourists and wildlife lovers, it’s been hailed across the globe as a fine example of state-sponsored conservation.

In all, it covers a whopping 550 square kilometers of primeval rainforest, and hosts the exotic likes of rhinoceros hornbills and swinging gibbon colonies.

Visitors who make their way here can enjoy safaris on specially constructed rope bridges in the canopies, which offer a unique perspective atop the old growth jungle.

3.Kuala Belait
Rubbing shoulders with Malaysian Sarawak on the very western edge of Brunei, this oil-fed town of nodding donkeys offers an image of the Brunei of the modern age.

Bustling and packed with business folk who’ve come from afar to seek out petroleum beneath the ground, it’s also home to the famous teapot roundabout.

It’s also got its very own beachfront, which finds its zenith with the welcoming little park at Silver Jubilee.

For food, shopping and souvenirs, also be sure to make a beeline for the Tudong Saji: a bazaar that erupts after dark with fish dishes and Asian crafts.
Muara juts out into the South China Sea with its own needle-shaped finger of land, forming the western end of the populous Brunei and Muara District.

Known primarily as one of the sultanate’s top beach towns, its home to a great stretch of golden sand and a clutch of picnic spots and playgrounds for those with kids in tow (look for the manicured lawns of the Muara Beach Recreational Park). Other pleasant walks can be had along the palm-dotted spit of Serasa Beach to the south, while views out across the ferry-dotted ocean are to die for.
Jerudong is a flash place of neon signs and in-your-face attractions, located just on the edge of the ocean and directly west of central Bandar Seri Begawan.

Although now largely contiguous with the capital, the suburb has its own distinct character; largely thanks to the brightly-lit casinos and flamboyant gaming halls that line up along the streets by the bucket load.

The go-getter vibe is carried on by one mind-boggling roundabout shaped like a giant diamond ring, not to mention the countless theme parks and manmade beaches, where loop-de-loops meet babbling water fountains and country clubs.

Brunei is a tiny nation on the island of Borneo, in 2 distinct sections surrounded by Malaysia and the South China Sea. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is home to the opulent Jame’Asr Hassanil Bolkiah mosque and its 29 golden domes. How to go — Located along Jalan McArthur, smack dab in the center Bandar Seri Begawan, Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is really easy to spot thanks to its towering golden-topped towers. It is an easy 5 to 15 minute way away from most hotels in the city center.

Flag a water taxi (ferry) from the waterfront for a quick tour around Kampung Ayer to see local life in the village.
