Youghiogheny River Trail (Great Allegheny Passage) Connellsville, PA South and Sheepskin Trail

The

The very beginning of the video shows my attempt to resurrect an old go pro camera that was in my vehicle. I briefly get it to work, several times for a few seconds, however the buttons don't work consistently and I can't see anything on the screen. I opt to use my cell phone to video this adventure. Skip the first 5.5 minutes if you want to just see the adventure.

This is a bike ride from Connellsville, PA South to the Sheepskin Trail, then farther South along the Youghiogheny River Trail (part of the Great Allegheny Passage, which connects to the C & O Canal Trail to form one of the longest bike trail corridors in the United States, running from Pittsburgh, PA to Washington, DC). This journey was made on March 10, 2019 in late winter. The green plants would be Hemlocks, rhododendrons, and mountain laurels (our state tree), with, perhaps an occasional pine or spruce tree. The journey ends with my return North (about 7 miles) on the Yough. Trail. The Sheepskin Trail is about 1 mile South of Connellsville, and runs for about 2 miles to Dunbar, Pennsylvania. The trail follow a tributary creek to the Youghiogheny River up a slight grade, passing a rail yard. A bridge crosses the small creek. The area is steeped in history with historical markers and signage along the trail. The town of Dunbar itself, reminiscent of a Western Frontier town has a park, which features a full sized 1800's era coke oven. This is the terminus of the Sheepskin Trail. In the video, I mistakenly refer to the Sheepskin Trail as the Sheepskin Hollow Trail, however that is a conservation area in Eastern Ohio. Coke is a raw material for steel making, which is made from coal. Coke is an essential ingredient in the steel making process. It is likely that the coke produced (from coal, mined locally) in these ovens was used in steel mills in Pittburgh, PA (about 40 miles to the North), fueling the American Industrial Revolution. Modern Coke processing plants exist in Clairton, PA to the North, as well as Weirton, West Virginia. Returning back toward the Yough. Trail, along the Sheepskin Trail, I notice a side trail, and decide to take it. To my left, I see rows of coke ovens, several are perfectly preserved, while others are open to show the brickwork inside. Fayette County, PA is full of old coke oven rows like this. I peep inside some of the ovens, and even go on top of them. It is important to be careful when venturing above old coke ovens. There were holes in the ground where the gases would have been vented. I watch my step and peer down into the ovens from above. The height of the ovens is about 5' or so, requiring me to stoop slightly to enter the half ovens. When it became impractical to transport coal to coke ovens, the ovens were abandoned as new ovens were built closer to where coal was being mined. After a thorough investigation of the coke ovens, I head back past the rail yard to the Yough. Trail (GAP), and go South along a wild and isolated section of the Youghiogheny River for about 5-6 miles. I soon notice a waterfall, just off the trail. I drop my bike, and check it out. When I arrive at the waterfall, I notice that the water runs through a horse shoe shaped tunnel, under the bike trail (which would have been used by trains to move the coal and coke mined and produced in the region). I head back onto the bike trail, and continue South until I get hungry and the wet muddy trail, which is shaded deep inside of Chestnut Ridge (Laurel Mountains), makes further travel too difficult. I timelapse some of the ride back to 1.4X the actual speed, since I was moving very slowly.

Drive through Oakwood Heights (Shinnston)

A small drive around Oakwood Heights in Shinnston, WV and a couple streets that lead to the area. (Duffy and Van Rufus)... It was taken late in the evening on March 7, 2013 and sometimes the reflection from the windshield is annoying but tolerable. There is no music and any noise is from the car or inside noise. There is no commentary simply the video showing the neighborhood. A very nice area in Shinnston with good people. Hope you enjoy this little trip. It is in HD so choose the highest setting your PC or device can connect to. (DSL or Cable faster than 3Mbps usually but not limited to)

Day 1 - Florida Panhandle Bike Tour. Newport Campground to Apalachicola. Beautiful Golf of Mexico.

I spent the night at Newport Campground and, in the morning, headed west towards Apalachicola, birding on the way. I was surprised to find a nice bike trail alongside the highway. Google Maps didn't show it; that was defiantly a benefit, but it didn't last very long. Take a look at my first-day video on a panhandle bike tour?
