23. SHOULD I BUY an electric outboard? | Torqeedo electric outboard review | Torqeedo 1003 review

We have had our Torqeedo Travel 1003 for 8 months and our subscribers have requested a video about it and we have had many others interested in it. So here is an unpaid video of our experience with it, the positives and the negatives. We hope it is helpful and please feel free to ask any questions.

Torqeedo website:

About us:

Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.

We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean.

Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

Torqeedo - Environmentally Friendly Alternative Outboards

Sailors like to sail. We'll rarely crank up the outboard unless absolutely necessary. Sailing is all about harnessing the natural energy of the wind and gliding through the water in virtual silence, not burning fossil fuels and making a lot of noise... These electric outboards from Torqeedo provide a solution more in tune with sailors - a greener, quieter form of propulsion that can even be powered by the sun! Electric Outboard Motor | ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Evo. FULL TEST

Being full time live aboard cruisers spending most of our time at anchor we rely on our outboard engine completely.
Our petrol engine was not only unreliable, it was noisy, heavy and meant we had to store petrol on board which I don't like doing.
So the search was on for the best electric engine money could buy and extensive research pointed to ePropulsion.
They've had very good reviews and now have a new version of their Spirit range, the 1.0 Evo which is a 3bhp equivalent engine that can be charged by mains, 12v and solar and also can generate it's own power to charge the battery when towed.
With no fuel costs and virtually no maintenance, it's direct drive brushless motors promise a eco friendly and whisper quiet ride, for an affordable price.
Too good to be true? We find out...

e propulsion spirit 1.0 plus on a large 11 meter, 8000 kg vessel. does it work?

our sealwatching.co.uk business need a silent solution while we are with the seals. so we asked ourself the question, will a 3hp electric outboard be strong enough to manouver our vessel in calm and sheltered waters slowly around the seals?

we haven't had the chance to properly test it but the first test run was promising. it is struggling but it does move the vessel. 11 meters, 8 tonnes and a license to carry 41 passengers.

We will try this motor and see soon if it will just manage or if we need the larger outboard, but the absolute silence of this motor is amazing.

I put the Propulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus through some testing on our tender and find it to be a game changer. I was pretty happy with initial testing but as I worked things out, I was left stunned.

Torqeedo outboard mini Op-Eval

We have been thinking about a new outboard for our dink for some time now. The old To-Hot-To is getting tired. I hate to give it up, but at some time I may have to.

In January of this year (2013) I contacted Ruckmarine in the San Francisco Bay area to talk about an electric outboard. You may have seen them advertised. They are called a Torqeedo. We were planning to tow Guenevere to the Bay Area in March for a bit of cruising, so arranged to meet Scott Ruck at the Oakland All Sail show. After a short talk, he volunteered to bring one over to our boat, at the Oakland Yacht club (after the show) and allow us to try it for ourselves.

This video is that test of the outboard.

I wish to thank Scott of Ruck marine for all the help!

Upgrading to an electric outboard! | Wayfinders Now #36

Hey Y’all,

After experiencing gas leaks and noise from the used two-stroke outboard we’d bought, we finally make the switch to an electric outboard!

We're Esther and Michael, an American couple with writing and photography backgrounds. In 2017, we sold our loft in Atlanta and moved aboard a 1994 Island Packet 35 named Hope that needed some love (and boat work after sitting on the hard for over three years!).

As we learn how to become better sailors, we’re especially interested in living small to gain abundance—cultivating sustainable living habits and having more time for nature and art! And we're learning about ways to 'live small' by reducing our waste footprint on and off the boat!

Thanks for supporting our story!

EXCESS 15 E-LAB TORQEEDO - Electric Catamaran - Boat Review - Multihulls World

This Excess 15 presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021 is a prototype equipped with two Torqeedo engines of 50 kW and two BMW i3 batteries.

Full test Excess 15 vs Lagoon 50 in Multihulls World #171

As part of their “Excess Lab”, an online platform that brings together Excess’ experts directly with existing and potential owners, Excess Catamarans unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival an Excess 15 powered by the Deep Blue Hybrid system from electric motor manufacturer Torqeedo. This system comprises a pair of 50 kW electric motors combined with two high-capacity Deep Blue BMW i3 lithium-ion batteries, two generators, and a hydro-generation system for use when under sail. We were able to go aboard the boat and see the power of the motors - 10 knots at top speed - and the astonishing torque provided, even at low rpm. No more vibrations, but on the other hand, the motors are quite noisy – as is the hydrogeneration mode. During testing, the system has delivered enough electricity to power 100% of the onboard equipment at a cruising speed of 7 to 8 knots. Phase 2 of the Excess 15 E-Lab project will be to expand solar panel area.

Torqeedo 1003 - first run with the ten foot clinker dinghy

Will I get another Electric Dinghy Motor?

We are just a family out living our dream. We started in the New Hampshire White Mountains but now we are living on our sailing catamaran in the Caribbean.

We have used an epropulsion spirit 1.0 outboard for almost 2 years and have loved having an electric dinghy motor. I'm not sure we will go out of our way to get another epropulsion though.
We used no gas to bring us around in our dinghy for two years
We used solar completely to charge it
We never worried about our engine not starting
Grace and the kids could easily use it.

ePropulsion eLite Review | which is best: eLite, Spirit or Petrol outboard?

We have been using an electric outboard full time as live-aboards for the last 5 years. First, we had an Aquamot outboard which ended up not being reliable but then we found ePropulsion and switched to their Spirit model when we were in Venice. We never looked back!

Having an electric outboard suits us perfectly. We tend to put the dinghy on deck when we are sailing so the outboard is constantly being taken off and on. Even with a small 3hp or 5hp petrol 2 stroke this is a hassle and involved using our rope and tackle to hoist it up onto the guard rail. If you're in Europe then you cannot buy 2 strokes anymore so you are stuck with the weight of a 4 stroke. We borrowed a 10hp 4 stroke in Turkey from a friend (thank you, Frank) which was essential for getting around in Gocek, but we found it impossible to get it on and off at anchor.

The electric outboards are a whole different ball game. They are light enough to lift with one hand. The Spirit is split into two pieces, the battery and the engine. Both very light. The eLlte is in one piece, but it's super light, it's also an easy shape to handle.

But what are they actually like to use? Well our Spirit gives us the same speed and power than the old 3hp petrol engine we had and is much more reliable!
The surprising thing about the eLite is it's pretty close to the performance of the 3hp engine we used to have as well. You wouldn't want to be using the motor at full throttle all the time as all these motors become much more efficient when using at lower revs. If you are using them at really low trolling speeds then the range you will get is huge. We haven't properly tested the eLite's range yet but it seems similar to the Spirit which will easily get 10nm at fast speeds and a lot more if you take it very easy with the throttle.

Where these outboards really win though, other than their lightness, is their reliability and the fact you do not need to have petrol on board the boat. You can charge the battery from anything, 12v, solar or mains.
You also get to travel in silence with no fumes and have amazing maneuverability in forward and reverse.

Further information on the eLite here:

Presentation of my F24MK2, part 2, the new (electric) outboard

(english subtitles available)

I bought an electric outboard (epropulsion Spirit 1.0 Evo) for my F24MK2.
Advantages:
1. Silent
2. minimal maintenance
3. light (-er to move around as it splits in two parts, each being ~10Kg)
4. recharges while sailing (ok, with a bit of salt, obviously it will create drag and at 6knots it only charges at 100W, so it will take 12 hours at 6 knots to completely charge an empty battery, which is.... ok, of questionable practicality if you don't do large crossings, and large crossings is not what we usually do on this boat...)
5. can be used on both the F24MK2 and on the dinghy, so I won't have to carry two outboards.
6. no more clogged carburetors, a common issue on small outboards, I had this issue with both engines but more profound on the small one. (i used to have a Mercury Sailpower 5 as main engine and a Suzuki 2.5 for the dinghy)
Disadvantages:
1. only 3 HP, actually less because 1KW = 1,36HP, but being electric, it would be torquey, it is to be seen if it is powerful enough to be used instead of the Mercury 5HP Sailpower
2. very low range, using the Mercury I had done more than 60 miles in a windless day whereas with the Spirit I would have to wait for the wind, also the range of the thermal engine can be multiplied by carrying along an additional jerrycan whereas for the Spirit I would need an additional expensive battery which would also add just a few miles of range, the manufacturer indicates a range of 13 miles at 500W for a 12 feet ultra light boat in dead calm waters, for sure the numbers for my boat will be a lot lower.
3. huge recharge time when compared to the time it takes to fill the jerrycans.

With a first reading one might say the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, so why I bought this outboard?

At first, to check it out. Then, it would make sailing more challenging. I always enjoyed sailing in light conditions but when going less than something like 4,5 Knots I was highly tempted (especially when not single-handed) to powerup the engine.
With the electric outboard, this will not be an option. I will have to keep sailing even in very light conditions and this will probably help me improve my sailing skills. Of course, without the iron sail the scale will change, distances that would considered small(ish) will become larger, as they will take more time to cross but I wouldn't mind if a one-day crossing becomes a 2 days crossing, this is something that will just change the perception of the length of the trip and that's OK by me.

Nevertheless, I will be using a number of methods to be able to recharge the outboard battery. I will be using a EcoFlow River Pro powerstation and also the lightest petrol generator I managed to locate. That means that actually I would have a Hybrid setup, that would allow me to recharge the outboard battery using Hydrogeneration, solar (with a dedicated 150W panel connected to the RiverPro) and also using petrol, with the petrol generator.

Hopefully soon I will be able to do an actual test sail so I will have a real world experience of what's what, but in the meantime this video is a overview of the new setup.

This is part 2 of my boat presentation, the first part can be found here:
