Welcome to the city of Ottumwa, Iowa, located in Wapello County in the southeast region of the state. With a population of nearly 25,000, Ottumwa is a Main Street community with a revitalized downtown district, anchored by a Public Library, City Hall, and County Courthouse all part of the National Register of Historic Places.

In the early 1800s the area was populated by several Native Peoples. The Ioway tribe had pre-historic connections to the area; the Mesquaki and Sac were relative newcomers. As westward expansion approached, these tribes were moved to western reservations and Wapello County was opened for a land rush on May 1,1843. By the end of May over 5,000 settlers came to the county to claim land for crop, livestock and homesteading. About 470 acres of the Ottumwa area was settled by investors of the Appanoose Rapids Company. Over time the name of the community changed from Louisville to Ottumwa. By 1844, Ottumwa was declared the county seat of Wapello County and began to develop as a city.

The population of Ottumwa boomed from 1,632 to over 5,000 from 1860 to 1870 and continued to grow to a peak population of 33,871 in 1960 before declining to 25,000 in 2000. The closure of several manufacturing plants in the 1960’s left a shortage of jobs in Ottumwa, forcing many to leave the city. The region also suffered agricultural crises and flooding, further contributing to out-migration. Ottumwa has traditionally served as the trade and economic center of Southeast Iowa. Community leaders realize that it will take vision, commitment and hard work to continue this role into the 21st century.

RADARing on to Ottumwa, Iowa!!

Radar O'Reilly, a character on the movie AND TV series M*A*S*H (played by Gary Burghoff), always claimed Ottumwa, Iowa as his hometown. It’s a charming little town that has survived flooding by the Des Moines River numerous times, loves the high school sports of its high school, has a cute little lunch counter called “Canteen Lunch,” and was the birthplace of actor Tom Arnold. Driving Around Small Town Hedrick, IA in 4k Video

Filmed in April 2023, I drive around the village Hedrick, Iowa to see what's going on.

Hedrick is a city in Keokuk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 728 at the time of the 2020 census.

In 1882, the Burlington and Western Railway a narrow gauge line, and its competitor, the Iowa Central Railway, built competing east–west lines through the area. These crossed the Rock Island tracks here, so it was a natural location for a station and town.

Hedrick was incorporated on April 23, 1883. It was named for General Hedrick.

The Burlington and Western was widened to standard gauge in 1902 and merged into the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy a year later. The Minneapolis and St. Louis took over the Iowa Central around the same time, and the Burlington line was abandoned in 1934.

By 1991 several businesses in the community's main street closed, and the economy had declined. The school serving the town closed that year.

Few businesses are open in the old historic business district; most businesses open to the public are located along Highway 149.

As of the census of 2010, there were 764 people, 310 households, and 211 families living in the city.

The racial makeup of the city was 98.3% White, 1.2% African American, and 0.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

The per capita income for the city was $14,166. About 9.0% of families and 13.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.4% of those under age 18 and 10.8% of those age 65 or over. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Target's Final Days in Ottumwa, Iowa - January 2016

January 30th, 2016 was a sad day for shoppers in southeast Iowa, because it was the day Target closed its doors for good on its store in Ottumwa. Target had been a staple of the community for decades, originally located on the town's north side, before relocating to its current building along the Quincy Place Mall in the 1990's. In November 2015, Target announced the closure of the store, due to several years of declining profitability. Although being met with extreme opposition from residents and officials in the area, the decision had been made, and after Christmas the store began its gradual clearing-out towards the end.

I've always regarded this as my Target store, ever since moving to the area as a kid in the 90's. Over the years, this was one of the main stores I'd go to for Christmas gifts for family, and for many items I'd regularly buy for myself. Several pieces of furniture in my room and a light fixture came from this store. In my earlier years of videotaping, I'd buy 8mm and Digital8 camcorder tapes here all the time. And music? No better place to go than here. I bought all the recent NOW compilation albums from the past 6+ years here, along with Meghan Trainor's Title, Adele's 25 and 21, Ariana Grande's My Everything, Taylor Swift's 1989, and Josh Groban's Stages, to name a few. And countless movies - since getting a Blu-ray player, I bought all my Blu-ray titles at Target. And it was here that I bought, with my sister, our first large 60 HDTV.

So with that said, I was incredibly sad to see Target go and, as you may have already guessed, retail is another thing I like to document (besides trains), especially when you realize it's not going to be with you much longer. It's always nice to look back at say, Gee, remember this? Even the simple task of shopping for those everyday things can have some fond memories attached to it. So on January 15th, my sister and I went to the Ottumwa Target and I filmed some various scenes around the store. At this point a lot of merchandise was gone around the edges and in the seasonal section, but for the most part it was still pretty full and not much had changed, so you get a basic idea of how it looked. You'll see me demonstrating one of the price scanners (something I've always enjoyed for some reason, lol) with my purchase of that evening, The Martian on Blu-ray. As we leave the store, you'll see the notice of the store's permanent closure, which then directs customers to the nearest open Target - in Coralville, a good one hour and 40 minutes away. Not sure if many customers are going to take Target up on that one...(I'd rather go to Des Moines myself)

On closing day, January 30th, I returned to the store for one last look and walk-around. You'll see that a lot's changed since the previous visit, with much more emptied out, but still a lot of merchandise. Unfortunately Target didn't really run any store closing sales except in a few departments. The TV's are all gone in electronics, along with items in various aisles in other sections. The boy's clothes section and all the shoes are pretty well gone. But besides that, the day seemed to continue on like any other - the store had quite a few customers, some with heaping cart fulls of stuff, and people gathered in Food Avenue (as I'm sure is their normal routine) as if nothing would ever change. As I filmed around the store, I had to buy one last thing here, and decided to buy a new clock radio/iPod docking station, which turned out to be pretty cool. I always end up finding the coolest stuff at Target. *Sigh* Oh well, all good things must come to an end I guess.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling... :) Hope you enjoy the video!

Campground Tour & Review ~ Ottumwa Iowa City Campground

Driving Around Small Town Martinsburg, IA in 4k Video

Filmed in April 2023, I drive around the tiny village Martinsburg, Iowa to see what's going on.

Martinsburg is a city in Keokuk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 110 at the time of the 2020 census.

In 1861, Martinsburg was a half-mile long row of houses mostly on the north side of the road. In 1874, Martinsburg had two general stores, a hotel, and a Presbyterian church. There were two physicians, and a wagonmaker who also had a vinyard. The proprietors of a nearby sawmill and grain mill also lived in town.

The Burlington and Western Railway arrived in Martinsburg in late 1882. This was a narrow gauge line, widened to standard gauge in 1902 and taken over by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy. The Minneapolis and St. Louis arrived in Martinsburg at about the same time. The two lines passed a few blocks north of the original town center, paralleling each other west of town, and diverging to the east. The CB&Q tracks through Martinsburg were sold to in 1934 to the M&StL.

By 1887, Martinsburg had been expanded by 5 subdivisions and it had gained a second church, a second hotel and a post office. In addition to the two railroad depots, there was a brickworks that mostly made drainage tile, served by the Iowa Central, and a creamery, a gristmill and a grain elevator, served by the Burlington and Western.

As of the census of 2010, there were 112 people, 47 households, and 32 families living in the city.

The racial makeup of the city was 99.1% White and 0.9% African American.

The per capita income for the city was $17,807. There were no families and 1.6% of the population living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and 8.0% of those over 64. #driving #travel #drivingtour
