Downpatrick Town Belfast - Things to Do In Northern Ireland - Downpatrick in County Down
Considering a different kind of trip to Northern Ireland that is not just about the capital city Belfast, one will start searching for those other cities and towns which carry something to show the people. One of the towns scattered all around Northern Ireland is Downpatrick and this is the journey we will go through in this video.
Downpatrick is a small-sized town and not one big place that people will spend a lot of time exploring. This small town is located 33 km south of Belfast city in County Down, Northern Ireland; so it would be one close place for the tourists who would be already discovering Belfast in the first place (
Downpatrick is one of the small towns that have been considered important since a very long period of time, it has been an important site since the ancient times and one of the different reasons for this is its cathedral where Saint Patrick is said to be buried there.Today, Downpatrick is the county town of Down and the joint headquarters of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (
Even though Downpatrick is considered a small-sized town, it is still considered the largest in the Lecale area, and it is a commercial, recreational and administrative center for the locality and services as a hub for the nearby towns and villages.
When it comes to the places or attractions in Downpatrick town or even in places that are very close to it that tourists could consider and go check while they are there, there is Ballyalton Court Cairn, Ballynoe Stone Circle, Down County Museum ( Downpatrick Racecourse, Downpatrick and County Down Railway, Inch Abbey, Lecale Peninsula and lots of other choices and places that could be within easy reach from this small town that people could find it interesting to go and check the history carried behind it.
Did you ever hear about St. Patrick's Day which is a famous celebration held in Northern Ireland in Downpatrick? This celebration is held through an annual cross-community parade which goes through the center of the town. During this celebration and day, Downpatrick closes its main streets and give chance for these celebrations to start every single year on the 17th of March. Back in time, this celebration was actually held for one day only, but in the recent years it was extended to include the whole week, bringing family events and history exhibitions for the public (
Actually most of those tourists who come to visit Downpatrick and get introduced to the history it carries behind, choose to do so during St. Patrick's Day celebrations in order to do both, attend this kind of celebration which is famous for the town's history of Saint Patrick and his burial place, and at the same time get to check this small town that is gaining much popularity among the people.
Travelling all around Northern Ireland could bring lots of suggestions and let people visit different places. One of these small towns visited in Northern Ireland is Downpatrick, but we still have other suggestions as well for those who are looking forward to experience something that is a little bit different.
You could visit Carrickfergus Town ( Busmills Town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland ( Rostrevor Town ( Portaferry in County Down ( Rostrevor in County Down ( and each of these different towns would carry its experiences through the old historical buildings, museums, castles, towers, etc. that would be visited and would tell more about the whole town to the tourists.
Visiting Downpatrick town in Northern Ireland and getting introduced to Down County Museum, to the Cathedral where Saint Patrick is believed to be buried, and even attending St. Patrick's day in this small place are included in the plan one should make when it comes to this small town - we have tried visiting and attending these things before and we definitely recommend that you do the same and make a plan for them now, along with moving through the streets of the town and visiting the other destinations which you might have already included in your list.

Landmarks - York Castle
Built in stone in 1270 by Henry the 3rd, the original York Castle is no more today, but its main tower, the Clifford's Tower, stands as a reminder of the once amazing fortress. Clifford's Tower was originally the King's Tower, but was renamed after Roger Clifford who was hung here in chains during the Battle of Boroughbridge in 1322.
