The city of Augusta probably isn’t the first spot on your American vacation bucket list. The town has a relatively small population of 20,000 and is the third smallest state capital in the USA. However, this teeny town is full of great things to do, from historically significant sites and wilderness parks to music events and beer festivals. If you’re a lover of the great outdoors and find yourself wondering about things to do in Augusta, Maine, don’t worry. You’ll be spoiled for choice in this vibrant city and surrounding countryside.

The highly accessible Greeneway Trail runs right through the town, following an old railway along the river and through woodland. If you’re an avid tree hugger, head to Viles Arboretum. It’s home to over twenty collections featuring trees from all over the world. And a little further afield, you can hike, mountain bike, ski, or snowshoe your way through Brook Bond Recreation Area. If you’re into American history and architecture, Augusta won’t let you down either. The Fort Western Living History Museum is the country’s oldest surviving French and Indian War garrison and dates from 1754, while the Maine State House was built by America’s first practicing architect Charles Bulfinch in 1832.

Be sure to book a trip to the Colburn House State Historic Site, which is the spot from which Benedict Arnold launched his 1775 Quebec expedition. Depending on when you visit, there are lots of things to do in Augusta, Maine for sports, music, and food lovers, too. Buy tickets to a basketball game at the August Civic Center, browse the food trucks while listening to a spot of music at the Waterfront Wednesdays concert series, or join the Kennebec River Brewfest, held on the last Saturday in June.

This is just a sample of the things to do in Augusta, Maine for visitors in America and worldwide. There are countless more day trips, foodie adventures, and cultural marvels in the area. So if you want to build your Augusta, Maine bucket list, watch on for more inspiration. If you liked this video, give it a thumbs up and share it. The 7 Poorest Places in Maine

All across the United States, there are communities grappling with poverty, lack of affordable housing, food insecurity, and other issues related to low income jobs. However, some states are better at handling and addressing those issues than others. Maine is one of those states. Even their poorest communities are usually more safe than those in other states. In this video, we're taking a look at the seven communities with the highest poverty rates. College and university towns have been excluded, because the Census Bureau counts students where they sleep, and that tends to skew the data.

Old Town, Maine. A classic old paper mill town!

Old Town, Maine. Let's check out this Maine paper mill town....we will be visiting the revitalized mill along with going downtown and chatting with a couple local residents. Its a great place on the Penobscot River with a lot of history. A town that's a little bit off the beaten path but it's a classic and that's why I like it.

Quill Hill for Maines Northwestern Mountains

Quill Hill has some of the best views in Maine. It is privately owned and they suggest a $10 per vehicle and $5 per passenger donation.

Quill Hill is made possible by the generosity of Adrian Adelard Brochu.
