5 TOP Things to do in Galicia | Travel Guide

Join us on our travel adventures around Spain! We leave the city of Salamanca and drive to the beautiful region of Galicia! Here are the 5 TOP Things to do in Galicia, Spain.

Curious about our Travel Map for this region of Spain? Check it out here ????

Located in Northwestern Spain, Galicia makes up Spain's Atlantic coastline. The region is more green, luscious and rainy compared to other regions of Spain. Our first stop in Galicia was the coastal city of Vigo. A lovely city in its own right, it also acts as the main transport hub to our other major destination in Galicia, the Cíes Islands. The Cíes Islands form part of the Atlantic Islands National Park, and is filled with beautiful beaches and wildlife, notably birdlife.

After our time visiting Vigo and the Cíes Islands, we headed to the capital city of Galicia: Santiago de Compostela. Santiago de Compostela is known for being the final destination of the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, and the alleged burial site of the Biblical apostle St. James.

From Santiago de Compostela we headed north along the rugged Costa da Morte in the northwestern region of Galicia. We stopped at the Playa de los Cristales as well as the beautiful Playa de las Catedrales.

If you find yourself travelling around Spain, be sure to head over to the beautiful region of Galicia, you won't regret it! Watch our video of our time in Vigo and Santiago de Compostela for a detailed travel guide and itinerary of these two cities as well as the best way to explore other areas of Galicia!

Ourense - Spain moments

Places to see in ( Ourense - Spain )

Ourense ( Orense ) is a city in northwestern Spain, the capital of the province of the same name in Galicia. Ourense was part of the Suebi (Suevi) kingdom during most of the 5th, 6th and 7th centuries and was destroyed by the Moors in 716. It was later rebuilt by Alfonso III of Asturias about 877. The Norse invasions as well as attacks from the Arab warlord Al-Mansur once more laid the city to waste. It was only under Sancho II and his sister Doña Elvira that the city was resettled during 11th century. The definitive urban impulse did not arrive until the 12th century when Ourense became an important center of services. Recently the city has made many efforts to provide new parks, bridges, fountains and geothermal springs installations to make the city more attractive.

Four rivers cross Ourense : Miño (the main river), Barbaña, Loña and Barbañica. The biggest river divides a rather industrial western suburb, which contains the railroad station, from the main town. Three highway and one railroad bridge cross the river in addition to the famous Roman bridge, Ponte Vella, which is now closed to vehicle traffic. The town is surrounded by forests, mainly oak and pine.

One of the main tourist attractions is related to hot springs, as Ourense holds one of the greatest amount of geothermal water in Europe. There are several places called pozas, with or without entrance fee, where you can have a bath outdoors. One of them is located inside the old town, relating to the ancient Roman tradition, as ruins of a Roman bath were discovered and are now open to visitors. There are more hot springs located along the river Miño: A Chavasqueira, Manantial-bouvette do Tinteiro, Burga do Muíño, Burgas de Outariz, which offer baths at different temperatures, ranging from 36 - 60 degrees Celsius.

The economy in the city of Ourense is marked by a predominance of service sector, the city has the largest shopping and leisure in the province, and administrative services . Ourense is a well known producer of European chestnuts (Castanea sativa).

Although mainly a town of services, Ourense is not without its tourist sites. The town has three parts: the medieval, the area of 19th-century expansion, and the modern perimeter. Many who pass by on the highway linking Madrid to Vigo are unaware of the medieval quarter, with its narrow streets and tiny plazas. Once an area of a certain dilapidated charm the area is now undergoing renovation and is full of typical restaurants and bars patronized by the university students of the town. The Plaza Mayor is the center of city life with its arcaded shops and the Town Hall.

The Cathedral is the most important monument in Ourense. This cathedral (founded 572; rebuilt in the 13th century) is the second oldest in Galicia. It occupies the same site as the Suevian basilica that stood there in earlier times. Romanesque in structure, but with a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles, it is rather hidden away but, contains a façade with the Door of Paradise in imitation of the Door of Glory of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Inside, the Capilla del Cristo, or Christ's Chapel (16th century), contains a crucifix venerated throughout Galicia.

The Miño is crossed at Ourense by the Ponte Vella (Old Bridge). With Roman foundations, it was reconstructed by Bishop Lorenzo in 1230 but frequently repaired since then; it has seven arches and a central span of 141 feet (43 m).

Glance at Galicia on a map, high in a northern corner of Spain, and you will see a ragged chunk of Spain's west coast, above the Portuguese border, stopping us shy of Santiago de Compostela.

Galicia's most precious treasure are the Rias Baixas, the term for the five estuaries that probe their way inland from west to east like crooked fingers. Its cool waters are home to Spain's best shellfish - mussels, clams, octopus and scallops.

But just before indulging yourself into a delicious culinary experience you will enjoy a boat trip to the Cíes islands, a series of islands which shelter the Rías Baixas. The magical Cíes islands are home to the prettiest beaches you've ever heard of. While the rest of Europe head south, stay ahead of the wave and enjoy this natural paradise in Northern Spain.

Delicious things to do in Galicia, Spain - coast and vineyards of Rías Baixas

Get a taste for Galicia in Spain, with these delicious things to do in one of the country's best wine regions. We head to the Rías Baixas wine region to take in palaces, waterfalls, and delicious seafood and wine. Galicia is renowned for its great seafood and famous for the fantastic wine, Albariño, produced by grapes grown only in this region.

You can enjoy Rías Baixas in any number of ways. If you’re a wine lover, there’s the wine route full of great vineyards where you have to stop by for a tasting! If flowers are your passion, you can sniff out the camellia route – the same fertile soil that brings character to albariño grapes is also beloved by this flower variety, resulting in a host of grand gardens across the region.

If you love hiking do so amid the shady paths of the stone and water route. And if you love history, you’re also in luck – similar to the chateaux of France, this wine region of Spain has a host of regal country houses known as pazos, or palaces.

We found many surprising things to do in Galicia - we swept the floor of a church (local legend dictates that it will sweep away the devil and bring you good luck). We sailed across the estuary out to mussel farms. We went cockling with local fisherwomen - yes, this is traditionally women's work in the region. We cooked all manner of local dishes including octopus from scratch. We even entered a wine bottle - see the quirky hotel room on a vineyard at Made in Fofan near the end of the video. Galicia certainly had much more in store than we had expected.

Places to see in ( Galicia - Spain ) Monterrei Castle

Places to see in ( Galicia - Spain ) Monterrei Castle

The castle at Monterrei is situated in the very south east corner of Galicia, a mere 10 minutes from Portugal on a hill that overlooks the town of Verin in Ourense. Monterrei castle is reached on either the N-525 or A-52 roads from Ourense.

As you approach Monterrei the castle appears ominously on the horizon and it is certainly imposing. A parador on an adjacent peak is also clearly visible, but it is the castle that captures your immediate attention and from the outside at least, lives up to expectations. From a distance two towers are visible and as you grow closer you start to notice the massive walls that rap and spiral down the hill below the main structure.

Parking is available at the bottom of the castle’s hill and although the climb looked daunting it took no more than a few minutes. The castle certainly increases in visual appeal as you draw closer and the various elements of its structure become more visible and detailed.

As you gain in elevation the castle, and perhaps more so the massive walls around and below it, become even more imposing. There are also the crumbling remains of three old cannons still pointing out through the ramparts towards invisible assailants or ghosts from the past. With no other visitors around we found it quite eerie.

If you are based in Ourense, or prepared to make an early start from Vigo or Pontevedra and travel on the A52 or N120 (both good routes) this castle is worth a look. But do ensure you can reach it before the afternoon fiesta or your journey will be partially in vain. You can also add a visit to the town of Verin that sits at the foot of the castles small mountain.

( Galicia - Spain ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Galicia . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Galicia - Spain
