HAYTON: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #80 of 172

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARSIH #80: HAYTON

Hayton is situated approximately 2 miles away from Pocklington and 4 and half miles northwest of Market Weighton in the East Riding of Yorkshire

The village is just off the A1079 – the former Roman road from Brough to York, at the foot of the East Yorkshire Wolds escarpment.

Hayton was once an outlying estate or berewick of Pocklington. It’s one of two villages in the parish – the other being Burnby.

There’s also a small hamlet with a Roman connection - Thorpe le Street. Although the civil parish’s name is officially Hayton its parish council is styled Hayton and Burnby Parish Council.

In 1935 Burnby and Thorpe le Street parish was abolished and merged with Hayton. This is another one which has very sparse information about it out there, for both Burnby and Hayton.

That said, I think I’ve found some good bits. There are two churches – one in each village, there’s an equestrian centre, a shop and a petrol station, and a popular pub, hotel and restaurant

Hayton’s best feature though would undoubtedly be its countryside. You’re surrounded here by beautiful rolling hills to the East and by a flat open valley to the West. Its not to be sniffed at,

Let’s get walking once again here in the East Riding!

SANCTON: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #52 of 172

There’s a long history on the East Yorkshire Wolds. Here it’s best shown by archaeological discoveries of a Romano-British farmstead and two cemeteries with urn burials dating to Anglo-Saxon times. A sixth century pagan cemetery was discovered at Grange Farm. The discovery of 69 pottery urns was recorded on an Ordnance Survey map of 1854.

Mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Santun”/”Sautune”, the name translates to mean “Sand Town”. That’s in reference to the dry sandy nature of the wolds in this part of East Yorkshire. The Domesday Book also records a church. Prior to this the vale ot sits within was a route for Neolithic settlers up to the dry land of the Wolds.

Its claim to fame comes in the form of a horse's cart or carriage that was found in one of the surrounding fields. These days it can be seen in London's History museum. The village is associated with the Jackson family. Thomas Jackson was born here. The son of an agricultural labourer, he became President of the Wesleyan Conference in 1838 and again in 1849.

Even at the onset of WWI, it was still essentially a farming community of arable and livestock farming where farmers were allowed to graze cattle by the roadside. In more recent times, it has seen a wind farm be introduced into the area - a 10MW wind generation scheme thanks to developer REG Wind-power

Loved this one, and you’ll see why! It’s gorgeous on the Wolds! This is SANCTON.

BROOMFLEET: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #21 of 172

Time for a very small village now along the Northern bank of the River Humber. This one might be tiny but what it lacks in size, I think it makes up for with interesting facts. For starters, this is he village that saw a local man risk life and limb for charity, wading across the muddy waters of the River Humber to Whitton no less than three times to raise £160,000. Top man, indeed!

The village is served by a railway station, which is a long way from the village itself. It stands on the Selby line and comparatively speaking, it gets a good service, with a total of eleven trains per day stopping at this station. I think if you live here, the train is likely your friend. I couldn't see any bus stops in this village which does suggest there are none.

There are also no pubs. The one pub this village did have years ago is now no longer- The Red Lion, but you can still see the obvious tell tale signs of it being one with the lamp outside the door and the boards on the walls. There's a village hall here, a fairly recent build, and an old school, a very impressive white building which dates from 1883.

Whitton Island, the river island we mentioned in the Blacktoft episode, falls partly within this parish, so too also does Weighton Lock, the outlet for the Market Weighton Canal which runs through Newport that you saw in the last East Riding episode. Together with Faxfleet, historically, this place was associated with St Mary the Virgin church. These days Faxfleet belongs to Blacktoft, in terms of civil parishes anyway.

It's small, it's rural, it's full of alluvial soils and clays, but most of all it's a lovely village. This is the parish of BROOMFLEET.

Places to see in ( Beverley - UK )

Places to see in ( Beverley - UK )

Beverley is a market town, civil parish and the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The town is known for Beverley Minster, Beverley Westwood, North Bar and Beverley Racecourse. It inspired the naming of the cities of Beverly, Massachusetts, and Beverly Hills in California.

The town was originally known as Inderawuda and was founded around 700 AD by Saint John of Beverley during the time of the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria. After a period of Viking control, it passed to the Cerdic dynasty, a period during which it gained prominence in terms of religious importance in Great Britain. It continued to grow especially under the Normans when its trading industry was first established. A place of pilgrimage throughout the Middle Ages due to its founder, it eventually became a significant wool-trading town. Beverley was once the tenth-largest town in England, as well as one of the richest, because of its wool and the pilgrims who came to venerate its founding saint, John of Beverley. After the Reformation, the stature of Beverley was much reduced.

In the 20th century, Beverley was the administrative centre of the local government district of the Borough of Beverley (1974–1996). It is now the county town of the East Riding, located 8 miles (13 km) north-west of Hull, 10 miles (16 km) east of Market Weighton and 12 miles (19 km) west of Hornsea. As well as its racecourse and markets, Beverley is known in the modern day for hosting various food and music festivals throughout the year.

As a market town, the market day is central to culture in Beverley; a smaller market day is held on Wednesday: however the main event is on Saturday, with all of the stalls.

The town is served by Beverley railway station on the Hull to Scarborough Line, with services currently run by Northern and a limited service between Beverley and London King's Cross provided by Hull Trains. Before the mid 1960s, there was a direct York to Beverley Line via Market Weighton; the Minsters Rail Campaign is seeking to re open the closed line.

( Beverley - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Beverley . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Beverley - UK

MELBOURNE: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #36 of 172

Sharing its name with the most populous city in the Australian state of Victoria, this is situated approximately 8 miles West of the market town of Market Weighton and 4.5 miles Southwest of the market town of Pocklington. It’s inextricably linked together with its neighbour Thornton, and the two share a church (which is located in Thornton).

Farming is a main economic driver in the area, with an agricultural machinery business – Sumo UK - employing about 40 people. The village is just to the South of the Pocklington Canal and has an easily recognisable spire on the top of the former St Monica’s church, clearly visible from all around.

The village has a local shop and it’s not a chain store. Rather it is an independent village store and I can personally recommend the handmade sandwiches on offer! The village has access to a mobile library which visits the village every so often, and when it does it can be found opposite the shop.

The Pocklngton Canal Amenity Society runs boat trips in the summer months on a vessel called New Horizons. Most of the canal lies within a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Multiple routes were proposed for the canal initially, including one that would have joined the River Ouse near Howden instead of the Derwent.

You haven’t been transported to Australia here, you’re just in the East Riding countryside. Here’s MELBOURNE.

WITHERNSEA: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #69 of 172

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #69: WITHERNSEA

Withernsea is a seaside resort town on the Holderness Coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire, and forms the focal point for a wider community of small villages, some we’ve already seen

It’s a typical seaside town with some nice beaches and plenty of amusement arcades. It’s even got the traditional flock of seagulls waiting to nick your fish and chips on the seafront

It’s most famous landmark is its lighthouse which is no longer active but now houses a museum to 1950s actress Kay Kendall. Aside from her, Withernsea has had a few other notable residents

It’s the birthplace of Jazz musician Kenny Baker, and footballer Stuart Gray. Dick Davis, the English-American poet, teacher, and award-winning translator of Persian poetry, grew up in Withernsea during the 1950s.

In more recent times, The Ruby Red Performers, a group of dancers who appeared on the 9th series of Britain's Got Talent in 2015, are from Withernsea

Withernsea sits close to the line of the Prime Meridian which crosses the coast to the north-west of the town. As such, there are a few references to it here including the Meridian Centre

Once upon a time, you could catch a train to Withernsea from Hull. In Victorian times, Withernsea provided a cheap and convenient holiday for thousands of workers in Hull.

The railway line has now gone, but Withernsea is still thriving, and in the summer months, it still welcomes lots of tourists. Let’s go check it out!

YORKSHIRE WOLDS WAY #1 - Winter Adventure - UK National Trail

We visit Yorkshire in winter to spend four days hiking the 79 miles of the Wolds Way. Accommodation, well of course we use the opportunity to test our winter gear and wild camp for three nights.

(Please help the channel, donate a coffee here }

Hessle is the official start place and is shadowed by the structure of the Humber Bridge. From here we move in a northern direction, passing through a number of villages and various landmarks. In the open countryside we often travel through ancient mature woodlands and deep dales.

Due to the shorten days of winter we often see the sunrise and sunset and manage to capture some dramatic imagines across the landscape.

Winter conditions are often very cold and wet and hence the rucksack load was significant more than normal however, this ensured we stayed warm and dry.

This video is the first of two and records the journey from the start at Hessle to just beyond the half way point of Fridaythorpe. Video #2 will be released one week following the release date of this video.

York Review: 35 - Scarborough

It's time to throw my hat into the ring! Scarborough is probably one of the most well-documented York Review towns on YouTube, but my show must go on. This is the third installment of the York Review expedition, where the toll of my journey was starting to creep in... What will I be like in Hornsea?

I'm cycling to every large town near me in order of ascending distance, and rating them - with the end goal of reaching Flamborough. This is York Review!

... And this, is The MacMaster's video. This guy has reached a production standard York Review can only dream of. When I watch this, I can't help but wonder if I'm glimpsing into my future.

The Yorkshire Wolds Way | East Yorkshire | Phase 2: South Cave to Goodmanham (2021)

The Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail Phase 2 -South Cave to Goodmanham Market Weighton
Route: South Cave - Weedley Dale - Swin Dale - High Hunsley -Newbald -Market Weighton
Distance - 20km, download route map gpx file here -
The walk commenced from the outskirts of South Cave where phase 1 ends. The weather was moderately cold and hazy. The path quickly began to ascend presenting the amazing views of the South cave area. Soon afterward the footpath led through to Weedley Dale, Swin Dale, and Newbald showing yet more breathtaking views. The weather had improved and the views were much clearer than in the past hour or so. The footpath from Newbald goes through many farmlands housing windmills and brings the walk to end at Goodmanham. As I would have struggled to find public transport here, I was compelled to take the diversion to Market Weighton, a place with better transport connections. The entire phase of this walk is clearly signposted and there should be no reason for the struggle to navigate.

WILBERFOSS: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #43 of 172

Here we are approximately 8 miles East of York city centre and 11 miles Northwest of Market Weighton. This is certainly a very pretty village and it has much to offer. This was my first time in the place, and it took me by surprise as to how much it has, how nice it is, and how much history it has. There’s a nice mix of old and new properties here, this being a commuter village for York that’s grown through time

It lies in close proximity to two Roman roads, one to the East of the village and one to the South, which is now under the A1079. No surprise then, that Roman artefacts have been located here. It was first mentioned in 1150 as “Wilburgfos” indicating that it was probably an Anglian settlement. In 1823 inhabitants in the village numbered just 335 so you can see how much this one has grown in just 200 years.

Most of the oldest buildings can be found on Middle Street, but if you look around there are fabulous examples of old architecture everywhere. Notable buildings include the Grade II listed Old Vicarage from the late 18th century on Main Street and Villa Farm also on Main Street. In comparison to just 200 years ago, currently there are 822 households in the village as well as a pub and general store, which is also a Post Office.

It stands just to the edge of a ridge known as the Escrick moraine and beside the substantial Foss beck, which flows southwards to become Blackfoss beck in Sutton upon Derwent. A road bridge which once carried the principal road in the parish runs over the beck. Its name is Stonebridge, so named by 1850

It’s just one of the many features that I found in the beautiful parish of WILBERFOSS.

A Great Winter Hike: The South Dalton 5-Mile Circular - Yorkshire Wolds -

Welcome back to another video.

This week we head over to South Dalton which is a beautiful village, located just outside the town of Beverley, in gorgeous Yorkshire Wold's.

The route is an easy 5-mile circuit, perfect to walk in the winter months. We walked it in the rain, on a wet Sunday morning in December.
The route leads you through South Dalton Estate and onto neighbouring country roads. A route, which avoids muddy, boggy fields, yet provides picturesque views.
