Places to see in ( Cantabria - Spain ) Torrelavega

Places to see in ( Cantabria - Spain ) Torrelavega

Torrelavega is a municipality and important industrial and commercial hub in the single province Autonomous Community of Cantabria in northern Spain. It is situated roughly 8 kilometres from the Cantabrian Coast and 27.5 kilometres from the capital of the Autonomous Community, Santander, half way between the Principality of Asturias and the Basque Country. The rivers Saja and Besaya flow through the city.

It is the capital of the comarca (county, but with no administrative role) of Valle del Besaya which includes also composed of the municipalities of Cartes, Los Corrales de Buelna, Cieza, Arenas de Iguña, Bárcena de Pie de Concha, Molledo, Anievas and San Felices de Buelna.

Its highest point is 606 metres and its lowest point is 12 metres.
Torrelavega is a regional center for industry and transport, and its weekly livestock fair is famous in Spain. Its stadium is known as El Malecon. The Cave of Altamira, famed for the prehistoric paintings found inside, is about 10 kilometers northwest of the city.

Torrelavega was founded at the end of the thirteenth century by Garci Lasso de la Vega I (the elder), Adelantado Mayor of the Kingdom of Castile in the name of King Alfonso XI of Castile. Its current name is due to the contraction of the original eponym of Torre de la Vega. The Castle or Tower of the Vega's was built by Leonor Lasso de la Vega, daughter of Garci Lasso de la Vega II, the younger, and mother of the Íñigo López de Mendoza, marqués de Santillana in order to administer the tax and privilege due in the family's territory.

The name of the comarca, Valle del Besaya is derived from the Astur-Leonese Bisalia, which in turn derives from the Celtic, Bis-salia (the second Salia or Saja) from the two rivers that flow through the city. Torrelavega was an important agricultural hub in the Kingdom of Castile since medieval times. Continuous population growth and industrial development enabled Torrelavega to attain city status in 1895 from the Queen Regent Maria Christina of Bourbon, Princess of the Two Sicilies. The city is home to the main seat of the Spanish anarcho-syndicalist labor union the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo.

In Spain There's an ENTIRE TOWN Under a Rock

The world is full of amazing things to see and places to visit, some are famous, well-publicized, and frequently visited and others... well, others seem like they're hidden under a rock.

Setenil De Las Bodegas is a Spanish town in the province of Cadiz that is, quite literally, built under a rock!
The modern-day town has evolved from a fortified Moorish town and its castle dates back to the 12th century.
Although it is known to have been occupied in the 1st century AD, evidence in other nearby cave dwellings such as La Cueva de la Pileta suggests that it may have been occupied as early as 20,000 BC!

As the river Guadalpurcon carved its way through a rocky gorge it created rocky overhangs that have been used as a shelter for a lot of the buildings of the town itself.
The Cuevas del Sol street is perhaps the most photographed street of the town but it isn't the only one that is built under these rocky overhangs: The Cuevas de San Roman, The Cuevas De La Sombra, and the streets of Mina, Calcetas, Triana, Herrreria, Jaboneria, and Cabreriza are also embedded in the rockface.

Calle Cuevas del Sol has many bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a drink and some tapas in the rocky shade or try local dishes like sweet potatoes with honey, Migas with chorizo made in the area, or scrabbled eggs with asparagus.

After that, you can cross two small bridges and you'll reach Calle Cuevas De La Sombra, this street is so narrow and the overhang so large that very little natural light enters.
Here you'll find various shops and quaint bakeries offering Cider empanadillas and other local delicacies.

You can also visit the Arab castle, the nearby ruins of Acinipo, or the town's churches, of which there are 5, the most important of which is The Lady Of The Incarnation whose architecture is an odd mix of gothic and Arabic because the Romans built it on top of an old mosque.

This small town has a lot to offer so you may want to consider staying at least one night, especially considering you could stay in one of these beautiful cave houses.

Camino Del Norte - Cantabria Region

As we left the Basque Country, we ventured into the Cantabria Region. Many beautiful coastal views and some grand architecture, some of my favorite places were in this region.

I loved our time at the hostel in Boo de Pielagos, one of the best pilgrims meals and where we really got to know Anne and Michael, our camino family for the rest of our journey.

Comillas was a favorite spot, with Gaudi's capris and the local graveyard, it was a medieval feast for my eyes.

Now, we did end up with our first day of rain when we hiked the coast to Llanes. The rain was a welcome change from the heat of the summer days. However, it was five days straight with rain, on and off through the day, with the first and last raining all day. Its not an adventure, if you do not have things that would test you.

Enjoy the video, I loved walking here and getting some good footage of our journey.
