What to see in Aitutaki | The Cook Islands

A little paradise means Aitutaki, home to approximately 1800 people and the world’s most beautiful lagoon. It's only 220 kilometres or a 50-minute flight from Rarotonga. Secluded and romantic, 15 motus (islets) are sprinkled across this huge turquoise, sunlit lagoon.

After Rarotonga, Aitutaki is our second most visited island in the Cook Islands. Secluded and romantic, it holds a compelling allure for honeymooners, many of whom choose this haven for the duration of their stay. You can look forward to languid, leisurely days simply reveling in each other’s company and the jaw-dropping surroundings. Work on your suntan lazing under a coconut palm, relax with a massage or explore the island by cycle or motor-scooter.

Memories of Cook Islands - Aitutaki and Rarotonga

Last (kiwi) winter 2021 we visited beautiful Cook Islands (Aitutaki & the main island Rarotonga), which at the time was open only to New Zealanders as a quarantine free travel so the number of visitors to the Islands was already at its lowest.

On the first morning upon our arrival we learnt that whole of New Zealand was in complete lockdown and so what was suppose to be a short heat-seeking winter break turned into a month long no-idea-when-we-can-return-home holiday in a very deserted tropical paradise.

It was all very serene and also very surreal. Ocean was the best place of course - full of freedom and feeling of one with everything the water touched from places to creatures.

This is a walk through of an overwater bungalow at the Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa in the beautiful Cook Islands. This lagoon is without a doubt one of the most beautiful in the world! Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa is home to the only overwater bungalows in Aitutaki.

Aitutaki is an atoll of the Cook Islands. It's famous for its beautiful turquoise lagoon, tropical beaches and palm trees. Although Aitutaki is the second most visited island of the Cook Islands, you won't find mass tourism there.

Explore Aitutaki including the main village Arutanga (Arutunga) and a boat trip to the Honeymoon Island of Aitutaki.

TRAVEL to AITUTAKI, Cook Islands - Welcome to Paradise (Vlog Part 2)

After an amazing few days hanging out in Rarotonga (check out our first episode) it was time to explore another part of the Cook Islands, and a spot that is known for having the most beautiful lagoon in the world, Aitutaki.

We jumped on an Aitutaki day tour from Rarotonga, flying across to the island and spending a few hours on a boat cruise, drinking coconuts, snorkelling with fish and wandering around One Foot Island, home to the bluest water we have ever seen.

For the last few days checking out the best things to do in the Cook Islands, we checked out the Highland Paradise Cultural Show, went snorkelling at Black Rock and tackled the legendary Raemaru Trek right before getting on our plane home.

Travelling to Cook Islands is a fantastic experience, and our trip was one of our favourites in recent years. We can't wait to return again one day.

Aitutaki Day Tour price is NZ$ 493 per person
Highland Paradise Tour price is NZ$ 110 per person

Disclaimer - We travelled to the Cook Islands as part of a media campaign with Cook Islands Tourism, and our flights were covered by Air New Zealand.

Amazing Day tour in Aiutaki and a short clip from the famous Muri Beach

One of the most amazing islands in the world

If you would like to use this footage contact :

Aitutaki is an almost atoll. It has a maximum elevation of approximately 123 metres with the hill known as Maunga Pu close to its northernmost point. The land area of the atoll is 18.05 km2 (6.97 sq mi), of which the main island occupies 16.8 km2 (6.5 sq mi).[2] The Ootu Peninsula, protruding east from the main island in a southerly direction along the eastern rim of the reef, takes up 1.75 km2 (0.68 sq mi) out of the main island.[3] For the lagoon, area figures between 50 and 74 km2 (19 and 29 sq mi) are found. Satellite image measurement suggests that the larger figure also includes the reef flat, which is commonly not considered part of a lagoon.

The barrier reef that forms the basis of Aitutaki is roughly the shape of an equilateral triangle with sides 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) in length. The southern edge of the triangle is almost totally below the surface of the ocean, and the eastern side is composed of a string of small islands including Mangere, Akaiami, and Tekopua.

The western side of the atoll contains many of Aitutaki's important features including a boat passage through the barrier reef allowing for anchorage close to shore at Arutanga. Towards the south of the side is a small break in the barrier reef, allowing access for small boats to the lagoon which covers most of the southern part of the triangle. Further to the north is the bulk of the main island. Its fertile volcanic soil provide tropical fruits and vegetables. Two of Aitutaki's 15 islets (motus) are also volcanic. The rest are made of coral.

Aitutaki Airport is located close to the triangle's northern point. There is an area suitable to land flying boats in the southeastern part of the lagoon.

Hi, we are Pietro and Eltje who after four decades in business and the corporate world unplugged to live on and explore unknown islands. In 2016 we bought the Dive and Shop on Rarotonga, the main island of the Cook Islands, as our first step into the South Pacific. We have subsequently sold that shop to become full-time explorers.

The Cook Islands Is A Tropical Island Paradise

The Cook Islands is a tropical island about a four-hour flight North East of New Zealand. The Cook Islanders are friendly and welcoming people, always willing to lend a hand.

The country’s primary source of revenue is tourism, which concentrates around Rarotonga and Aitutaki. This leaves the other, remarkable outer islands virtually unexplored. Each opens for exploration with complete freedom, as is rarely experienced today.

When one first arrives in Rarotonga, the main island is like going back in time. It has a town with a hand full of shops offering the basics. Travelers are advised to bring along whatever they may need during their visit, other than foods and drinks.

But only if you touch ground on the Outer Islands, you’ll find the most amazing untouched landscapes. Places with great people and an environment for real and rare adventures.

Aitutaki, The Cook Islands

Aitutaki Island, in the Cook Islands, is one of the jewels of the South Pacific.
It has a turquoise lagoon and a barrier reef. It is a one hour flight from the main island of Rarotonga.
The lagoon is teaming with wildlife such as tropical fish, turtles, crustaceans and giant clams. There are many seabirds such as red-tailed tropicbirds and herons.
This paradise is an ideal place to let the stress soak away and just luxuriate in the beauty of nature.

Aitutaki Day Tour - Explore one of the most beautiful lagoons in the World

If you haven’t planned an overnight or longer stay then this is the way to experience the spectacular colours and beauty of a classic tropical South Pacific atoll.

The day starts with a free transfer from your Rarotonga accommodation and a 40 minute flight to Aitutaki. On descent, the stunning colours of the lagoon come into view and this is usually where everyone has their phone against the windows – capturing the magical landscape below.

On arrival at Aitutaki, the Day Tour takes a 45 minute tour of the island by “Les Truck” taking in views of inland plantations and the main villages. Then the highlight of the day. The renowned Vaka Cruise – six hours of cruising the magnificient blue lagoon aboard the Polynesian styled vaka Titi-ai-Tonga. Visit three (Moturakau, Akaiami, One Foot Island) small motu (islets) fringing the lagoon with time for snorkelling at each one. Experience the solitude of pristine white sand beaches and warm crystal clear water.

Highlights include the iconic One Foot Island (Tapuaetai) and Akaiami – where giant TEAL flying boats used to stopover for refuelling on the famous Coral Route between Fiji, Samoa and Tahiti.

After visiting the snorkelling spot, lunch is served on board. A delicious medley of barbecued pelagic fish steaks served with a variety of fresh salads and tropical fruit all sourced from local farmers. Lunch is accompanied by complimentary tea, coffee, and water, and a cash bar for wine, beer, champagne, and soft drinks is available.

The day ends with an arrival back in Rarotonga at 5.30pm and a free transfer back to your accommodation.
