Have you ever heard of LIBERLAND? The self-declared micro-nation that sits on a mysterious 7km plot of land on the border of Serbia and Croatia? If not, then you will be absolutely shocked by what I'm about to share with you in this 33-minute video - one of my favorite stories of the year!
The 'country' of Liberland was founded in 2015 by a Czech libertarian named Vít Jedlička, and it was built on one simple principle: FREEDOM. More than 900 citizens already have their Liberland passports (yes, they are real!!), and this legal document allows them to enter several U.N. countries such as Haiti, Malawi and Colombia. Word on the street is spreading, and now more than 700,000 people are on the list to get their e-residency cards.
I recently went to Liberland's annual festival called 'Floating Man,' and I was really inspired by the conversations that I had. There were so many creative and forward-thinking minds in one place, with a lot of optimism for the future of Liberland to gain full independence. But one thing didn't feel right to me... It is extremely difficult to enter the physical land.
Both the Serbian and Croatian border police are guarding Liberland 24-7, along the banks of the Danube River, and they will arrest anyone who tries to step foot on the land itself.
In this video, I uncover the full Liberland story and go on a wild mission to land on its soil.

This may be physically, a country may succumb to rising sea levels for example and find itself underwater.
Or politically as in a country being overthrown by another country or group or perhaps even reunited with another country, to form a new country.

The capital of the country that doesn't exist
Transnistria, now infamous as The country that doesn't exist, has jumped into the media focus again recently due to its links to Russia and Ukraine.
So I followed where so many vloggers have gone before me, with worse video equipment and poorer editing skills. Join me as I take a train from Chișinău to Tiraspol, the capital of the self-declared republic and have a look at what life is like inside a nation that few else believe exists.
This is the first video from Transnistria, in the next few episodes we go outside the capital. Stay tuned!

If you are looking for a travel destination WAY OFF THE BEATEN PATH, Transnistria might be just what you're looking for! Eastern Europe doesn't get more unique than this where a part of Moldova broke off as its own republic after the USSR split up. The have their own government, customs and even their own currency! Even though they might not be recognized by the UN as a singular country, they really do live life by their own rules. It was an incredible adventure to be able to go here and I would highly recommend it to anyone else looking for a rare type of adventure!

Solo in the country that doesn't exist (Northern Cyprus)
Northern Cyprus is a self-declared state in the eastern Mediterranean that is recognized only by Turkey. It is located on the northern part of the island of Cyprus, which has been a center of human activity for thousands of years.
The history of Northern Cyprus is closely linked with that of the island of Cyprus as a whole. The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and has been ruled by various empires and powers throughout its history, including the Greeks, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans.
In 1878, Cyprus was leased to the British Empire, and it became a British colony in 1925. During this period, tensions between the Greek and Turkish communities on the island began to rise. In 1960, Cyprus gained independence from Britain, but this did not resolve the tensions between the two communities.
In 1974, a Greek coup aimed at enosis (union with Greece) led to the Turkish military intervention and subsequent division of the island into two parts: the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus in the south, and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north.
Since then, Northern Cyprus has been recognized only by Turkey and is considered by most of the international community to be occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus. The situation has remained unresolved, with ongoing efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

Transnistria, officially known as the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR), is a breakaway, de facto independent region located in Eastern Europe. It is situated between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border, within the internationally recognized borders of Moldova. Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and a brief armed conflict ensued in 1992. Despite its self-proclaimed independence, Transnistria is not widely recognized as a sovereign state, with most countries considering it part of Moldova. The region has its own government, military, and currency, but its political status remains a source of tension in the broader geopolitical context of the Eastern European region. Efforts to find a resolution to the status of Transnistria continue, involving negotiations among Moldova, Transnistrian authorities, and international mediators.
