Being is a deep-water port; the ships sail right up to the city. They could not get closer. It has therefore been fought over throughout history and has been a maritime gateway for Germany, Austria, and Central Europe. Sine 1939 it has belonged to Italy. As such it is multicultural, it is well-developed and has much history and many churches. Slovenia is only 8km away, and Croatia is just 30km away. There is a free elevator to the top of San Giusto Hill if you do not want the climb, Jean walks up from the Roman Theatre, past the 14th Century Cucherna Tower. After the castle and Cathedral, she walks down through the Johann Joachim Winckelman Museum and Gardens towards the James Joyce Museum and the Statue of Joyce at the canal, the old shipping port. There you can relax and have a drink or lunch. She finishes by showing us the Aquarium, the pier and the old lighthouse near the ship, but found by turning right as you leave the ship and step ashore. 3 THINGS TO DO on Day Trip in ITALY ???????? (Trieste)

We had one day to explore Trieste, on an Italy Day Trip, so here are the 3 things we couldn’t miss.

We are currently on a Croatia road trip, taking our RV arround, mostly covering Croatia and Slovenia. But we also really wanted to take a quick day trip to Italy since it literally borders where we were driving through from Umag, Croatia to Lake Bled, Slovenia.

On our way, we figured out all the things to do in Trieste, Italy and found that food, coffee, and gelato are 3 major things to do in this region. So of course, we had to take advantage on our one day in Italy. In this Travel Vlog, explore this beautiful coastal town and see how the location of the city and the history of the coffee have played a major role in Trieste history and tourism.

We hope you enjoy Trieste as much as we did! And make sure to take a quick stop over in this magical Italian town before you head to other parts of the region.

Spend a Day in Trieste, Italy - We visit this HISTORIC and BEAUTIFUL Italian City with Roman Ruins!

15:15 Leaving and Outro

This week, we found ourselves in the beautiful and scenic Trieste, Italy as we were traveling from Munich to our destination: the cruise ship that would take us on our tour around the Mediterranean. But, we ended up having about 24 hours to spend in this beautiful city, so we decided to make the most of it!

Trieste, Italy is located on the very far northeastern part of the country, near the border of Slovenia. It was actually a part of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire up until 1918, and was a jewel and fourth largest city of the Hapsburg Monarchy. The city has always been an important center for trade, given its location directly on the Adriatic Sea, and it has been fought over by many world powers.

When we arrived we had a list of places that we wanted to see. We settled into our hotel, and then set out on our little Trieste adventure. We first saw the beautiful and serene Giant's Staircase, a large stone set of stairs that lead up the side of the mountain. We followed these steps until we reached one of our first stops, the Remembrance Park (Parco della Rimembranza). Here we stopped to pay our respects to the hundreds of men who died in World War I (to which the park was dedicated), and World War II. It is a beautiful park, with large trees that were planted for each man killed in the war, and it overlooks the beautiful valley where the northern part of Trieste lies.

From there, we made our way over to the Castello di San Guisto, which sits high on the same hill as the Remembrance Park. This fortress started being built in the 15th century and was finished in the 17th century, overlooking the three sides of Trieste, the north, the port, and the south. It never really saw any military action, so the fort is very well preserved, and visitors can actually go inside and see many of the old quarters and the museum that was built there. There are sometimes even events that take place here, such as concerts.

On the same hill is the Trieste Cathedral, or the Basilica cattedrale di San Giusto Martire. This cathedral dates back to the 14th century and is a beautiful example of stonework and the building methods of the time. It actually stands on top of an old Roman temple that used to be part of the forum that also stands on this hill. This Roman forum that sits here is a great exemplification of how important this city was to the ancient Roman peoples. And this forum is amazing to see. You have to check it out if you come here!

Making our way down from the hill, we stopped to see the Arco di Riccardo, an old Roman stone archway that is believed to be one of the old gates of the city, though nobody really knows what it used to be or why just this one archway survived. It stands among the modern buildings, so the juxtaposition here is astounding.

From there we also saw another example of the city's ancient past, the Teatro Romano, or the Roman Theatre. This theatre was once outside the city walls and looked right down onto the sea, giving the viewers there a wonderful scenic view while they watched their plays and listened to presentations. This theatre is incredibly well-preserved, and it seems very small but actually used to hold over 6,000 people!

From there, we ventured out toward the sea and saw the beautiful Piazza Unita d'Italia, or the Unity Plaza of Italy, which is a huge open area that stands with government buildings all around with one side open to the sea. We also saw the Grand Canal, which is a peaceful spot full of shops, restaurants, and other piazzas.

Trieste, Italy is a wonderful and peaceful place to visit. Not to mention the natural beauty that stands all around on the northernmost coast of the Adriatic Sea. If you are going to visit Italy, we strongly recommend that you take the 2 hour train ride from Venice and enjoy some time in Trieste. It truly is a jewel on the Adriatic.

Trieste, Italy ► Videoguide, 12 min. | 4K

The Province of Trieste is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land in southeast Friuli Venezia Giulia, between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia. This is an extraordinary destination for its historic treasures, artworks and its middle-European character. It inspired important writers such as Rilke, Joyce, and Svevo.
Off Trieste's coast is its broad Gulf, with numerous tiny bays, small harbors and breathtaking reefs; and of course Miramare Castle is accompanied by the splendid blue of the sea.

The charm of the area resides not only in its natural traits, but also in the elegant city of Trieste, where the Habsburg influence is noticeable; the inland small towns with their longstanding traditions; and other quaint touristic draws on the coast - countless gems set within this tiny strip of land.

TOP ATTRACTIONS IN TRIESTE, Italy | 3 days in this beautiful city

TOP ATTRACTIONS IN TRIESTE, Italy. We spent 3 days around this beautiful city admiring its architecture, which is very different from the other cities in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. In fact, the neoclassic and liberty style was typical of cities under the Austro-Hungarian empire. We explored the Roman ruins you can find just a few minutes uphill from Trieste's main square, and we visited the interiors of a luxurious '900 insurance company headquarters which has been today converted into a Hilton hotel, in which we stayed in during those days.
If you're curious to find out about the top attractions in Trieste and what to see in 3 days, please watch this video!
This video was filmed in June 2020.

Why You Should Visit TRIESTE | Italy Travel Vlog

Trieste is a beautiful little city along the Istrian peninsula right up next to Slovenia and Croatia. We loved it for its amazing architecture, of which our favorite was probably the Miramare Castle which sat on the coastline and had a lovely garden area. There’s a ferry you can take to get to it, and we would definitely recommend it because it allows you to get an incredible view of the castle and its coastline from the water.

In Trieste, we also marveled at how intertwined the city is with old ruins from the Roman empire. This really is an amazing city to visit if you’re looking to see some of Italy’s awesome architecture while not getting overrun with crowds!

Travel Vlog: Trieste | Italy's Hidden History Gem

Trieste. So rich and full of history, culture, and chillaxed vibes. This was the perfect city to cap off our time in Italy. We swam in the Adriatic, saw some Roman ruins, explored some churches, and even went to a concentration camp located in one of the neighbourhoods. Jo may or may not have gotten a tattoo while we were there. Check it out!

Miramare Castle, Trieste, Italy the top tips

Miramare is a Cinderella-like castle, on a point in Trieste, Italy. It takes around an hour to walk the inside the building, longer if you study it with the audio guide. The gardens, the tea shop, and even the bay can add to the trip.

Castello di Miramare is easily accessible by public bus 6 or 36, or is about a 10 mile walk along the front from the bay.  There is one boring bit as you walk around the warehouses.
