St Helena Island Carnival 2020

The biennial Carnival through the streets of Jamestown, St Helena, organised as a fund-raising event for the Cancer Support & Awareness charity.
This Carnival was remarkable in that it was held on 31 October, 2020, while the world was still struggling to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, however, St Helena had been fortunate to remain one of the very few places with a Covid-free status, thus allowing this large gathering to take place.
Note the nine ladies leading the Carnival are 9 of the 12 who took part in Miss St Helena, one week earlier, including the winner, Latisha Fowler.

First Boeing 757-200 landing at St Helena Airport by Titan Airways

Historic first landing of a Boeing 757-200 passenger jet at St Helena Airport, and largest aircraft to date, when the Titan Airways flight touched down on Thu 30 July, 2020.
This special repatriation charter flight from UK brought in 51 passengers, (including 7 from Ascension Island) and returned to the UK next day with 94 passengers.
This video was taken over two days - the arrival on 30 July, then a series of training circuits on the airport the next morning.
Special thanks to St Helena Airport for facilitating the making of this video.

What To Do in St Helena

This trip to the St. Helena took place from 15 - 18 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. I do not encourage anyone to travel now. #StayHome. Here's a video with my thoughts on the current situation:

St. Helena may just be one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited. The Saints are some of the kindest people I’ve ever come across in my travels. Because I had such a great time, I thought I’d try something different for this video about St. Helena.

I normally make videos here on YouTube about airlines, but perhaps the most amazing part of aviation are the places it can take. Places like St Helena. So, in this video about St Helena, I’m trying a little experiment: Let’s check out some things on the ground in St Helena! We’ll explore some of the highlights of St. Helena and some of what I enjoyed while I was here. Let me know what you think about this experiment by leaving comments. I always appreciate feedback! And next week, I’ll post a more typical video about my return to the mainland.

St. Helena is home to epic history, out-of-this-world scenery, and incredible opportunities for intreprid travelers.

We’ll explore the infamous Jacobs Ladder, Napoleon’s two residences on St. Helena, some of the hiking available on the island, as well as some of the most amazing vistas.

This is my first attempt at a video about something unrelated to aviation, so I’d appreciate your feedback. I think it’s probably fair to say I need to expand my coverage of things like accomodations and food if I continue with this. Also, maybe I’ll do this on a separate channel. Anyway, let me know what you think of this first attempt. And, also, let me know if you’re heading to St. Helena once we can all travel again!

RMS St Helena Final Voyage - The Island Says Goodbye

Last voyage of the RMS St Helena, sailing out from Jamestown harbour on Saturday 10 February, 2018, at the end of 27 years serving as the island's lifeline to the world.
After opening its brand new airport, St Helena Island was now switching to air travel as the primary method for transporting people, so the Royal Mail Ship was no longer required.
Saying goodbye to the RMS St Helena was an emotional experience for many on St Helena as the ship had become a much-loved part of the Saint way of life.
On this February day in 2018, a flotilla of 19 small boats took to the water to bid the RMS farewell, and the Jamestown seafront was lined with hundreds of well-wishers.
For the full story of the day, complete with interviews and photographs, please visit our blog.
[update: 2021 - the ship has since been acquired by Extreme E, the electric off-road racing series, has undergone an extensive refit and now serves as their command and transportation centre]

Where is St Helena Island Island. One of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world

Where is St Helena Island. We are often asked this question and love telling the story. So we decided to make a short video showing where St Helena is, how to get there and why you want to go.

If you would like to find out more about St Helena, please subscribe to your channel as we have loads more for you to enjoy!

Measuring just 47 square miles or just 10 x 5 miles wide, it's located a little more than 1,200 miles from the coast of Africa, and 2 and half thousand miles from the South America. Home to around only 4-5 thousand friendly souls. With an estimated 20,000 or so Saints around the world. Saints is what people who come from St Helena are called. And that’s why we call yourselves The Saint Cooks.

We’re British citizens. As St Helena is one of the 14 British overseas territories around the world. It has been under British rule since 1658, having been discovered in 1502 by Joan da Nova for the portugese. He named the Island after Helena of Constaintinople.

Since 2017 you can now fly. From either Johannesburg or Cape Town in South Africa. It’s a morning flight taking around 6 hours to the Island, with a quick refuelling stop at Walvis Bay in Namibia. And then its a 4 hour return flight back to South Africa. Typically flights are every Saturday, and sometimes on Tuesdays depending on the travel season.

On St Helena You can go and visit the oldest, living land animal in the world!
Jonathan the tortoise! Who is officially he is 186 years old.

St Helena is probably best known because the french emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. He was exiled there after losting the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He died on the Island in 1821. By all accounts he didn’t enjoy his time as a prisoner on the Island. The houses where he stayed at the Briars and Longwood are now excellent museums which you can visit. You can also visit Napoleon’s grave in Sane’s Valley, a spot he picked myself.

Some other fascinating things about St Helena are. It has one the most expensive coffee’s anywhere in the world. Can see unique tropical scenery unlike anywhere else. Lush and stunning on the inside. And wonderfully rocky on the edges.

It is renowned for its friendliness. We Saints are very friendly and welcoming. And we like to feed you!

Thanks for watching!

Saint Helena Island Travel

Saint Helena Island Travel
Saint Helena is a volcanic tropical island in the South Atlantic Ocean, 4,000 kilometres (2,500 mi) east of Rio de Janeiro and 1,950 kilometres (1,210 mi) west of the Cunene River, which marks the border between Namibia and Angola in southwestern Africa. It is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.[3] Saint Helena measures about 16 by 8 kilometres (10 by 5 mi) and has a population of 4,534 (2016 census).[2] It was named after Saint Helena of Constantinople.

The island, one of the most remote islands in the world, was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502. It was an important stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa for centuries. Napoleon was imprisoned there in exile by the British, as were Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo (for leading a Zulu army against British rule) and more than 5,000 Boers taken prisoner during the second Boer War.

Between 1791 and 1833, Saint Helena became the site of a series of experiments in conservation, reforestation and attempts to boost rainfall artificially.[4] This environmental intervention was closely linked to the conceptualisation of the processes of environmental change and helped establish the roots of environmentalism.[4]

Saint Helena is Britain's second-oldest remaining overseas territory after Bermuda.

Drone Footage Reveals the Timeless Beauty of St Helena Island - the Perfect Holiday Destination

This video of St Helena captures the island's idyllic beauty and majesty. Shot at various locations on the island, this aerial footage shows the unspoilt vistas awaiting the traveller - contrasted against the frenetic pace of modern-day living.

Scenes from Sandy Bay (Lot and Lot's Wives), Thompson's Wood, the cloud forest (Peaks) and Cassons, play host to many less tall ships now than down through history but when they arrive to the island they remind us of a bustling bygone era.

The lush green interior of the island softens the imposing volcanic cliffs and ledges of the exterior; a relationship which continues to fascinate to this day.

Napoleon was no doubt less in awe as it served as his prison until his death in 1893 at Longwood House. I'm sure he would have been excited at the possibilities of the new St Helena airport which, to some extent, removes the island's isolation - releasing islanders from both their greatest emotional burden and advantage: Families can now be present at the side of loved ones during times of illness within hours rather than days. However, hard-fought society and community values are now much more vulnerable to the withering influence of the outside world.

St Helena Day 2017

St Helena Day is celebrated on the 21st May and marks the day when the island was first discovered by humans!
There was a street parade, stalls selling sweets and homemade jewellery, live bands, a race to the top of Jacob's Ladder and fireworks.
A wonderful holiday that the whole island enjoys! This years theme was Commonwealth and men, women and children dressed up in countries representing all the different commonwealth countries.

GoPro: Diving 100 year Old Wreck In St Helena

Gopro Diving the SS Papanui, which sank in James Bay in 1911 on her way to Australia with immigrants and a full cargo. She arrived in James Bay on fire, combustion having occurred in her coal filled holds and she sought refuge in the lee of St. Helena Island. The ship burned out and sank, but its 364 passengers and crew were rescued and looked after on the island. She is now lying in fairly shallow water and it’s easy to snorkle over her on a calm sunny day. Showing above the surface is part of her steering gear and visible below is her counter stern. Visible amidships are her four boilers, three in a row and one for’ard.
