Mauritius: Beauty on the Indian Ocean

Would you like to explore the beautiful island of Mauritius, its breathtaking landscape, thriving economy and resilient people? We’re compelled from within to share our loaded findings about Mauritius. This island nation has a lot of attention-grabbing facts to discuss. Any of our fellow explorers who have ever visited Fiji or French Polynesia may have an idea of what to see in Mauritius. This is a country colonized by 3 countries and ruled by 4 different countries. In this video, you’ll find out what more than 1.36 million tourists who flock to the islands each year are going there to see. What’s the motivation for such a high volume of visitors, outnumbering the natives by a significant margin? Today, you’re going to learn about the history, geography, people, and economy of this continental island in this fast-moving video.

About Mauritius: Location and Size
Located approximately 1,100 nautical miles off the southeastern coast of East Africa, it lies about 500 miles east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Physiogeographically part of the Mascarene Islands together with the nearby Réunion which is a French overseas department, it includes the main island of Mauritius, as well as Rodrigues, Agaléga, and St. Brandon. The country Mauritius spans 790 square miles and has an exclusive economic zone covering 670,000 square nautical miles making it the 169th largest country in the world. And one of the smallest in Africa. In the 51st position by size, it’s bigger than only Comoros, Sao Tomé and Principe, and Seychelles. Only 0.07 percent of this area is covered by water.
There are an estimated 1,265,475 people in Mauritius, making it the 158th most populous country in the world and 48th in Africa. It is among the most densely populated countries, actually the 21st with a huge population density of 1,601.2 per square mile. The country’s capital is Port Louis, It is also its largest city. Officially called the Republic of Mauritius, the country’s constitution recognizes no official language. It, however, states that the business of the National Assembly shall be conducted in English while members can also address the house in French. While the two languages are official de facto, the country's lingua franca is Mauritian Creole, a unique language that derives its structure from French.

Geographical Features of Mauritius
Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate with warm and sunny weather all year round. The average temperature in the country ranges between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. While Mauritius is the island most people recognize, other islands and even two disputed territories are included in the Republic of Mauritius as mentioned earlier. These islands were formed about 9 million years ago as a product of the lava spewed out by underwater volcanoes. Today, there’s a dormant volcano known as the Trou aux Cerfs, in Mauritius. This fascinating natural wonder attracts visitors who enjoy hiking.
The island of Mauritius is volcanic in origin and it is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs. The northern part of the island is a plain rising to a central plateau with an elevation varying from about 900 to 2,400 feet above sea level. The two major rivers, namely the Grand River South East and the Black River, serve as the primary sources of the country’s hydroelectric power. Lake Vacoas which is one of the main reservoirs is the chief source of water.
Mauritius is the only known habitat of the flightless Dodo bird. They were believed to be found only on the island and were once present there in huge numbers, and flightless because no one preyed on them. They, thus, felt safe on the ground. However, the arrival of humans changed the narrative for them as sailors saw vast numbers of the birds being killed for their meat. Rodents and primates also destroyed and consumed their eggs such that the entire dodo population was almost wiped out within a century. Another one of the world's rarest birds found in the lush green forests of Mauritius is the Pink Pigeon.

Mauritius Travel Guide: Mauritius Attractions - Maurice Attractions (4K)

Mauritius Top Tourist Attractions - Things to do in Mauritius #mauritius #mauritiusattarctions #thingstodoinmauritius #maurice #mauriceattractions #mauritiustravelguide
Mauritius - French: Maurice, Mauritian Creole: Moris, officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent, east of Madagascar. It includes the main island (also called Mauritius), as well as Rodrigues, Agaléga and St. Brandon. The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues, along with nearby Réunion (a French overseas department), are part of the Mascarene Islands. The capital and largest city, Port Louis, is located in Mauritius, where most of the population is concentrated. The country spans 2,040 square kilometres (790 sq mi) and has an exclusive economic zone covering 2.3 million square kilometres.

Arab sailors were the first to discover the uninhabited island, around 975, and they called it Dina Arobi. The earliest confirmed discovery was in 1507 by Portuguese sailors, who otherwise took little interest in the islands. The Dutch took possession in 1598, establishing a succession of short-lived settlements over a period of about 120 years, before abandoning their efforts in 1710. France took control in 1715, renaming it Isle de France. In 1810, the island was seized by Great Britain, and four years later France ceded Mauritius and its dependencies to Britain. As a British colony, Mauritius included Rodrigues, Agaléga, St. Brandon, Tromelin, the Chagos Archipelago, and, until 1906, the Seychelles. Sovereignty over Tromelin is disputed between Mauritius and France, as it was not specifically mentioned in the Treaty of Paris. Mauritius remained a primarily plantation-based colony of the United Kingdom until independence in 1968.

In 1965, three years before Mauritius became independent, the UK split off the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritian territory, and also split off the islands of Aldabra, Farquhar, and Desroches from the Seychelles, to form the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). The local population was forcibly expelled and the largest island, Diego Garcia, was leased to the United States. The UK has restricted access to the Chagos Archipelago, barring entry to casual tourists, the media, and former inhabitants. The sovereignty of the Chagos is disputed between Mauritius and the UK. In February 2019, the International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion ordering the UK to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius as rapidly as possible to complete the decolonisation of Mauritius.

Owing to its geographic location and centuries of colonialism, the people of Mauritius are highly diverse in ethnicity, culture, language and faith. It is the only country in Africa where Hinduism is the most practised religion. The island's government is closely modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system, and Mauritius is highly ranked for democracy and for economic and political freedom. Mauritius is the only African country to be in the very high category on the Human Development Index. According to the World Bank, the country is classified as a high-income economy. Mauritius is also ranked as the most competitive, and one of the most developed economies in the African region. The country is a welfare state. The government provides free universal healthcare, free education up through the tertiary level and free public transportation for students, senior citizens, and the disabled. In 2019, Mauritius was ranked the most peaceful African country by the Global Peace Index.

Along with the other Mascarene Islands, Mauritius is known for its varied flora and fauna. Many species are endemic to the island. The island was the only known home of the dodo, which, along with several other avian species, was made extinct by human activities relatively soon after the island's settlement.
