Saint-Paul-de-Vence can be seen from afar, with its medieval appearance surrounded by ramparts, at the top of a hill between the Mediterranean and the Grasse Pre-Alps.

Many artists stayed there after the Second World War and brought an international reputation to the village.Today, the Maeght Foundation maintains the artistic vocation of the place.

It is certainly the most visited village in the hinterland of Nice and even one of the most touristic in France.

Located between Eze and Monaco, the town of Eze extends over three cornices with a drop of almost 700 m.

Eze Bord de Mer with its beach shaded by a maritime pine forest is home to many paths that wind between the Belle Epoque villas.

The narrow streets of Eze-Village are lined with old stately homes occupied by artists' or craftsmen's workshops and shops.

From the exotic garden, set in the ruins of a medieval fortress at the top of the village, the panorama extends beyond the Esterel massif. In winter, on a clear day, you can make out the Corsican mountains.

The Grande Corniche is a virgin space between sea and mountain. From this Mediterranean maquis, the gaze embraces the 360° landscape with, in winter, the snowy Mercantour, Italy and Saint-Tropez.

History:
The oldest traces of land use in the town date back to the Iron Age (around 400 BC) at Mont Bastide. Then the destiny of Eze is linked to that of Nice. In 1388, Eze was attached to the House of Savoy and was occupied by Turkish troops from Barbarossa for a few days in 1543. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the armies of Louis XIV destroyed the castle. Eze is attached to France in 1860.

During the Belle Epoque and then during the interwar period, tourists began to visit or stay in Eze. George Sand describes its tormented landscapes, Friedrich Nietzsche finishes his work “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” there, Prince William of Sweden takes up residence at Château Eza from 1923 to 1953.

Today personalities from the artistic world regularly reside in the town. Bono of the group U2, Julian Lennon are among the best known.

Eltz Castle in Germany: Would you like to live here?

Luxury, romance and a fairytale atmosphere — that's how we imagine life at the medieval Eltz Castle. But what is it really like to live there? Spoiler: there are 80 rooms, all of which require a little maintenance. DW's Hannah Hummel asks owner Jakob Graf zu Eltz about life at the castle back then and now. The castle resident has even set up his home office there. Would that be something for you, too?

What is Szentendre and what happens there?
Szentendre is a scenic town on the Danube's bank, about 40-minutes from Budapest, best known for its Mediterranean vibes, Baroque architecture, history of Serbian residents, Hungarian folklore stores, and extensive art scene, both old and modern. True, you can find all of those in Budapest, so Szentendre isn't a must-visit destination for short-term visitors. But if you enjoy a break from big-city life, you can spend an adventure-filled half a day here with some advance planning. Szentendre's food scene has a long way to go, but I’ve included below a few cafés and restaurants that won’t disappoint.

The visit to Szentendre is done during the day, the city is not very big, you can leave quietly at the end of the morning and return at the end of the afternoon, the frequency of the trains is reasonable, you just need to be informed schedules in advance so as not to be caught off guard.

Szentendre (or Saint-André) is a small town easily accessible by train or boat, which explains the fact that there are many tourists. The city is famous for its museums and art galleries. In the past, there was a very strong Serbian community in the area, and today, there are several churches of different denominations. In Szentendre, a Mediterranean air floats with its mainly Baroque architecture and narrow, cobbled streets.

Szentendre station is 5 minutes walk from the beginning of the historic center, it is really very convenient. At the exit of the station, I discover this nice sculpture of a globe-trotting robot. I arrive immediately in the large main artery, with its small craft shops.

The city is on the edge of an arm of the Danube, it is also served by boats. Stroll along the river, various urban facilities have been arranged and friendly little restaurants await you.

During your walk in Szentendre, try to pass through Kossuth Lajos Utca, Kucsera Ferenc Utca, Fő tér and around the Danube. You should thus come across art galleries, lace shops, souvenir shops, restaurants as well as the Chiprovachka and Blagovestenska churches on your way. As for museums, it all depends on your preferences and interests. The Ferenczy Museum hosts paintings and sculptures by local artists.

Bicolline tour | Inside a medieval fantasy LARP town

I visited the 25th Grande Bataille of Bicolline, a medieval fantasy LARP in Canada. This video has information about the visitor experience and a tour of the Ordo Cervi camp of The Voyage North. Bicolline is a highly immersive medieval fantasy LARP site with hundreds of buildings housing numerous guilds and merchants. Each year, thousands of LARPers visit Bicolline for the Grand Battle during a week long LARP, where they play humans, elves, fairies, dwarves, and more. Bicolline 2022 was incredible!

Building a Medieval Castle in Modern Times

It’s hard to fathom how magnificent castles were built centuries ago. One group set out to understand just that by building their own masterpiece two hours outside of Paris. Tucked away in a forest, a team of master builders and archeologists are attempting to construct Guédelon, a castle from the 13th century, using only medieval techniques.

Sabbione, the most beautiful medieval village with stone houses in Switzerland

Sabbione is a hidden gem that offers an insight into the rural life and culture of Switzerland. It is a place where you can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Sabbione is a small village in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland, located in the district of Leventina, near the border with Italy. It has a population of about 50 people and is known for its traditional stone houses and picturesque mountain views.
Sabbione is so charming because it has preserved its historical and cultural heritage. The village has a small church dedicated to Saint Martin dating from the 14th century and frescoes from the 15th and 16th. The church is also the starting point of a pilgrimage route that leads to the nearby sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso.
Another reason why Sabbione is so attractive is that it offers a variety of natural attractions. The village is surrounded by forests, meadows and streams that create a peaceful and relaxing environment. The most impressive natural feature of Sabbione is the Sabbione Waterfall, which is a 40-meter cascade that flows into the River Brenno. The waterfall is accessible via a hiking trail that leads from the village through a forest and a bridge. The trail is about 2 kilometers long and takes about 45 minutes.

The charm of a village, The village of Grimaud combines the charm of Provence of yesteryear and the medieval stories kept secret by its Castle. Immerse yourself in the heart of the authenticity of Grimaud and go back the centuries along the flowery paths.

The monuments of Grimaud make you feel the past but not only... The cobbled streets, the stone walls tell stories that they are perhaps the last to know. It resonates with the secrets of Grimaud.

Lose yourself in the alleys, a thousand stories have happened there. It's up to you to imagine them.

Grimaud, in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, is a village proudly displaying the colors of Provence. A Provence that is part of a medieval atmosphere, with its houses, its alleys, its Castle... The latter is the best known of the monuments in Grimaud, but did you know that it was far from being the only heritage building?

When summer arrives, it brings with it the blooming bougainvillea.

And what a wonder! The buildings of the old village are then adorned with a tailor-made purple dress to decorate the doors and windows of the houses.

Some bougainvilleas even climb a whole section of the facade. They are looking for the sun, to sunbathe every time!

It is a beautiful shrub that is often found in the Mediterranean, it is rare to find it in colder regions because it does not resist frost (a bit like the inhabitants of the south, it must be admitted).

A village flowered by its inhabitants
Every year, every season, the inhabitants of the old village delight us with their plantations which mingle, gently, with the houses, the alleys.

We nicknamed them among ourselves: “the village gardeners”.

It is impossible to miss the bougainvilleas during your visit. The best time to discover them is between the end of May/July. They may bloom again after summer as well.

Find the bougainvillea walk where around thirty shrubs are referenced and admire them in the alleys of Grimaud.

A village blessed by the gods
The heart of the perched village, wonderfully restored, has kept all its authenticity: cobbled streets, facades with vaulted arcades, pastel windows with flowery shutters, squares with bougainvillea essences. Unmissable, the discovery tour of the village, its churches and chapels bears witness to a rich historical past, traces of which can be found in the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions.

The feudal castle, placed at the top of the hill in its green setting, guarded access to a territory (the current Gulf of Saint-Tropez), called Le Freinet, from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution. The view from above is unforgettable. After a restaurant break in the village, go to the Moulin Saint-Roch, prelude to a walk below to the Pont des Fées, where you will make wishes to… but that must remain a secret!

Presentation :
A small medieval town located between Thonon and Geneva, Yvoire occupies a spur that juts out into Lake Geneva. During the Middle Ages, this strategic position plunged it into the center of wars between House of Savoy and the lords of Faucigny allied to the county of Geneva. It was Count Amédée V, at the beginning of the 14th century, who made it the fortified town that can be admired today.

After the Second World War, the inhabitants, and especially the women, gradually decorated their houses with flowers. In 1959, Yvoire was awarded for the first time in the Flowered Towns and Villages Competition and won 1st place. Since 1974, the village has been ranked 4 flowers, the highest distinction in the competition.

Today Yvoire has been part of the Most Beautiful Villages of France association for more than 30 years. This small village aspires calm and relaxation. Let yourself be intoxicated by the subtle blend of colors and scents as you stroll through the entirely pedestrian historic center, while discovering surprising views of the nature of Lake Geneva and the Alps. Gastronomy is also in the spotlight with the famous perch fillets, a specialty of Lake Geneva and with other regional dishes. A delicious moment to awaken the senses.

- Entirely pedestrian tourist village
- Village award-winning 4 flowers since 1971
- Most beautiful villages in France for more than 30 years
- A tourist offer based on nature (Garden of the 5 senses, Solar Boat, Domaine de Rovorée-la Chataignière a sensitive natural space, etc.)
- Animations with artistic, gastronomic vocations, heritage conservation

Yvoire Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, this charming medieval village of 1,000 inhabitants is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Bloom and The Most Beautiful Villages of France (see below). Ideally located at the mouth between the large lake (to the east) and small lake (to the west), Yvoire had great military importance at the end of the Middle Ages.It was in the 12th century that its castle was built, while the village was fortified in the 14th century. In the 16th century, the village was attacked by the Genevans and the French who burned the castle. This is how Yvoire ended up losing its role as a military sentinel on Lake Geneva. You will probably be delighted by your visit Out of season, the village is certainly a little sad because there are few people, but on sunny days, the village comes back to life and is teeming with people. Take the time to stroll through its pretty medieval streets lined with restaurants and shops. lakeside, enjoy the port and let yourself be lulled by the lapping of the waves ue.

The medieval village
Haut-de-Cagnes, a medieval village located at the top of the castle hill, is the historic part of the town of Cagnes-sur-Mer.

650 inhabitants have chosen to live in this district, classified as a historic site in 1948, which has managed to preserve the serenity of village life, outside the hectic pace of the Côte d'Azur.

Patina of centuries, stones steeped in history, shaded, narrow and flowery streets, unusual views of the Mediterranean and the Mercantour, everything contributes to retain the visitor in search of authenticity.

Unique site on the French Riviera
Haut-de-Cagnes has managed to both preserve the mystery of the strongholds of Provence and open up widely to visitors who roam it.

A maze of steep streets paved with pebbles, vaulted passageways, flower-decked stairs, eye-catching houses, unusual viewpoints, artists' studios, Haut-de-Cagnes reveals itself at every step...

The Church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul
The church, which had become too small to contain all its faithful, was restored and enlarged in the 16th and 18th centuries.
The work completed in 1762 doubled the proportions with the higher nave visible in the right part, a main entrance portal was also added. It is visible from the church square behind the building. At the time, the parish of Cagnes had 1,200 souls.

In the church, you can admire some religious paintings from the 18th century, including the canvas that adorns the high altar and represents the handing over of the keys to Saint-Pierre.
The paintings of the Stations of the Cross, produced by the painter Charles Barkev on the occasion of the 2000 Jubilee, offer the particularity of representing Cagnois from Haut-de-Cagnes who agreed to pose to illustrate the Passion of Christ.

When The Rounded Hill...
“Cagnes” is a name of Ligurian origin which means “inhabited place on a rounded hill”.

This rocky outcrop, which culminates at 91 meters above sea level, offered our ancestors an ideal surveillance and defense position, near a river and good land.

This place was first occupied by the Celto-Ligurians and then by the Gallo-Romans.

When Provence united with France in 1483, Cagnes became a border town on the only road leading to France from the States of Savoy.

From the 16th century, this border zone which entered into a cycle of great European wars was often looted and sacked.

The reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV bring back wars and multiple invasions of the border area.

During the French Revolution, in 1790, Cagnes still had only 1,388 inhabitants, most of them peasants who lived from the cultivation of vines, olive trees, hemp, citrus fruits and early vegetables.

At the beginning of the 20th century, when Renoir came to settle in our city, from 1903 to his death in 1919, Cagnes was the capital of the canton with around 3,000 inhabitants.
Attracted by the celebrity of the Impressionist master, many painters who loved the Mediterranean light came to settle in this picturesque town which is nicknamed The Montmartre of the Côte d'Azur, and which attracts celebrities from the world of arts and entertainment until the 1960s.

Among the most famous, stayed or lived in Haut-de-Cagnes, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Chaim Soutine, Foujita, Yves Klein, Georges Simenon (at 98, Montée de la Bourgade), Mouloudji (singer poet and composer), Suzy Solidor (singer and cabaret director), Georges Ulmer and Brigitte Bardot…

Romania, Village Life in Transylvania

A beautiful little documentary of village life in Gyimes, in the South Eastern Carpathians in 2018. Ancient, vernacular, small farm-houses line the stoned side roads on which horse-drawn vehicles carry logs, hay, stone and people this way and that all day long. Most people live by small-scale farming producing their own honey, cheese, bread, veg and fruit, milk and meat. Water is always from the well, pure, sparkling and cold. Cows and sheep wear bells and high above the village the mountain meadows hum with insect life while the extraordinarily rich flora remains untouched by sprays and chemicals.
Szekler people, Romania's Hungarian speaking minority live in Gyimes, which now lies within Bacau county. The history of the area and its association with Transylvania, is very complicated .... I am no historian and apologise for any errors I have made.
Enjoy the film, all taken with a little, hand-held Panasonic HC X920.

The castle of Yvoire dominates Lake Geneva
Yvoire Castle dominates Lake Geneva
Yvoire is a flowery medieval village on the shores of Lake Geneva, ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France
Located on the French shore of Lake Geneva, between Geneva and Evian, the village of Yvoire is nicknamed the pearl of the lake.
Built at the beginning of the 14th century, the medieval city of Yvoire has more than 700 years of history, witnessed by its ramparts, its fortified gates and its imposing 14th century castle.
During your walk in Yvoire, take advantage of the pretty shops and taste the local specialties in the restaurants for a wonderful day of relaxation.

Flowers and history
A flowery medieval village, Yvoire has been rewarded many times and is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France for the charm of its narrow streets which lead to Lake Geneva and its old stones which invite the visitor to immerse themselves in the history of Savoy.

In the fortified town, you will travel from the Middle Ages by discovering the gates and ramparts that protected the village and castle, up to modern times to discover a picturesque site that has very well preserved its character.

A magical break facing Lake Geneva
Finally, take advantage of one of the terraces to sip a drink or dine facing the grandiose panorama of Lake Geneva, the Jura, Switzerland and the Alps.

Yvoire is a magical place that combines authenticity and history. Time stands still...

History of the castle of Yvoire
Built from 1306 during the fortification of the village by the Count of Savoy Amédée V, the castle of Yvoire had the military objective of monitoring navigation and controlling the road which linked Geneva to the upper Rhone valley and to Italy. .

For several centuries, the village of Yvoire was at the heart of several strategic or religious wars between French, Bernese, Genevans, as well as the houses of Faucigny, Dauphiné and Savoie.

In 1591, a fire ravaged the building, which only regained its current form in the 20th century, when Félix Bouvier d'Yvoire undertook several interior and exterior renovation works, including the installation of the roof and the corner watchtowers. in 1939.

The mystery of Yvoire
You will not enter the castle of Yvoire.
Property of the Yvoire family since the 17th century, it is not open to visitors (and it is not a hotel in Yvoire). This contributes to the mystery of the medieval village of Yvoire…

Living in a historic medieval village

Our student media crew from Ashington High School and our NNPA placement student from Newcastle University visit several historic medieval villages to see how is life going there.

Camlann Medieval Village

a living history project portraying rural England in the year 1376, is dedicated to offering the public powerful personal experiences of history, including multiple learning and performing arts opportunities, built upon research of rural communities in 14th century England, to provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between those historical events and western society today.

MY TRIP TO A REAL LIFE MEDIEVAL TOWN in Rural England

It had never crossed my mind that a medieval town still exists, that is until I ended up on an unplanned trip to rural England where I visited the town of Sandwich, right next door to Ham in the county of Kent. This town seems preserved in time, with its history starting in the 1200's and even before. It is a very historical place and when you walk through it you feel as though you are being transported to a totally different era. It was an incredible place to explore. A bucket list must if you are in England!
