La Fortuna, Costa Rica Budget Travel Vlog | Arenal Volcano, Rio Celeste, Hot Springs

La Fortuna offers so much variety when it comes to things to do and see in Costa Rica! We spent four days in La Fortuna and enjoyed every minute of it, especially because everything was so affordable! The local food was so flavorful and being immersed in such lush nature was absolutely breath-taking. If you're lucky, you might catch a view of the Arenal Volcano when it's not hiding behind the clouds. We were able to see the sunset over the volcano and it was a sight like no other! La Fortuna is amazing overall. Don't get us started on the waterfalls and the sky blue waters - watch for yourself! If you enjoy this video, please be sure to SUBSCRIBE for future content; we greatly appreciate it!

The Hertz/Firefly Car Rental in San Jose Costa Rica provided the WORST customer service we have ever experienced from a car rental place (They gave away the automatic car we reserved, only gave us an option to drive a manual car which we were unable to do, and even if we were able to drive manual they increased the daily rental price 10-fold).

We recommend you look elsewhere for a car rental ( or check out our truly AMAZING Uber driver and friend named ALEJANDRO who drove us all over Costa Rica.

Watch this video to see how we spent 4 days in Costa Rica for $439/pp. Prices can of course vary depending on dates, and the number of people you travel with. This is just to give you an idea!

My perfect La Fortuna Itinerary | Review & Guide

#LaFortunaItinerary #ThingstodoLaFortuna #ArenalTrips

Wrapping up 4 days in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, I wanted to do a quick review and also include what would be my perfect itinerary for La Fortuna and Arenal if I could have my time back.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in La Fortuna. The climate is great. Sure, it does rain a bit but it doesn't have the stifling heat that Costa Rica's coast has. It's peaceful. You wake up to a crazy amount of birdsong. There's loads of stuff to do from volcano treks, waterfalls, hot springs and zip lining. Essentially the whole of La Fortuna is set up for tourism so it's super easy to organise various trips and everyone is incredibly helpful.

If you're in Costa Rica I would highly recommend making the trip to La Fortuna. Personally, I would visit Arenal/La Fortuna after the coast so that you have some contrast both in terms of climate and in terms of how relaxing it can be.

Here's my perfect itinerary for La Fortuna over 4 days. As you can see, there's loads of things to do in La Fortuna:

Day 1: Rio Celeste. A full day trip about 1 hour and 45 minutes from La Fortuna. It involves a hike to the river and waterfalls where the water is, well, a crazy colour. Turquoise, baby blue water. The photos and videos almost look fake.

Day 2: Ziplining. Sky Adventures are the most well known company in the area but you have a number to choose from. The zip lines themselves are very high and very long, some are 170m high and 800m long, giving you an incredible view of the surrounding area.

You could also go white water rafting - we actually bumped into a group that had just returned from white water rafting and they were very impressed!

Day 3: Mistico Hanging Bridges. Get there early so that you are the first ones in the park and take your time at the first bridge (it has the best views). Incredibly peaceful and if you're lucky you'll be able to see Arenal Volcano over the rainforest canopy.

Follow this up with La Fortuna Waterfall in the afternoon. You can go to the waterfall in the morning but it might be too cold to really enjoy. The free waterfalls are very close to the main La Fortuna waterfall so you can easily do both in a couple of hours.

Day 4: Hot Springs. We went to Tabacón Resort & Spa which is one of the more premium hot springs, but you do have multiple options. Just relax and soak yourself in the natural volcanic thermal spas. Again, you can also do the free ones either as a cheaper option or in addition to the paid hot springs.

And enjoy!

Volcanic Hot Springs, La Fortuna | Costa Rica | Tabacón vs Free

#HotSpringsCostaRica #Tabacón #LaFortuna

The volcanic hot springs at the base of Arenal volcano are one of the main tourist attractions in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. These natural thermal spas (or Agua Termales) are around 38°C/100°F but different pools have different temperatures.

La Fortuna has a wide range of hot springs and spas where you can soak in the mineral rich volcanic water. These include Ecotermales, Baldi and the most famous one, Tabacón which is part of the Tabacón Resort & Spa.

We visited Tabacón thermal hot springs as well as the free hot springs in La Fortuna, which are right next door. We wanted to see whether the $70 USD entrance fee to Tabacón was worth the spa experience....and whether you should visit the premium hot springs and spas or just got to the completely natural spas (that are free).

Whilst you can stay at Tabacón resort and gain access to the spa, most people pay for a 4 hour visit either 10am - 2pm or 6pm - 10pm with prices starting from $70 depending on the time of year. You can also buy a full day pass with lunch or dinner (or both) with prices ranging from $85 - $105 USD. Finally, as a spa they also offer a range of other services such as massage on site.

To book:

The free hot springs are just across the road from Tabacón and use exactly the same thermal river! They may not be as pristine but you are still surrounded by nature and the rainforest that covers much of La Fortuna.

Shot on GoPro Hero 9 Black & Go Pro hero 8 Black.

Timecodes:

4:06 - Cold Pool
6:47 - Cost of Tabacón thermal spa
7:52 - Lunch (included in entrance fee)
8:54 - Free hot springs in La Fortuna
9:55 - Is Tabacón worth it, or are the free hot springs better value?

FREE vs PAID HOTSPRINGS | Arenal Volcano - LA FORTUNA, COSTA RICA

After being in La Fortuna, Costa Rica for a couple of weeks now, we wanted to compare the free vs paid hot springs, to see which is the better way to spend your money and your time here.

With the geothermal hot springs of the Arenal Volcano being one of the biggest attractions to this part of the country, we just had to find out for ourselves. So in this video, we take you on a day filled with both experiences back to back.

We start at the El Chollin natural river hot springs, located just a short 15-minute drive out of La Fortuna, and right next to some of the most popular resorts and hotel hot springs in the area. Next, we go to the Baldi Hotsprings Resort and Hotel, found just up the road from the El Chollin, where we relax in multiple hot and cold pools, a waterslide park, dinner, and more!

We hope you enjoy our video of the Arenal Volcano Hotsprings. Thanks for watching and don't forget to hit SUBSCRIBE!

La Fortuna: Arenal Volcano, Waterfalls and Free Hot Springs | Costa Rica Travel Vlog ????

We continue our Costa Rican adventures and head towards La Fortuna.

Volcán Arenal, the youngest and most active volcano in Costa Rica, shadows over the town of La Fortuna, dominating the lush rainforest landscape. Between 1500-1900, Arenal remained silent and was considered extinct. However, on 29th July 1968 at 7:30am, it violently erupted, burying 3 villages and killing 87 people. La Fortuna - aptly named for sure - was spared the rocks, lava and ash.

Join us as we explore this beautiful area, home not only to a massive volcano, but also natural geothermal hotsprings and waterfalls.

Stay tuned for our next video when we visit Jacó and Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio!

LA FORTUNA TIPS:

- Swim beneath the mighty Catarata Rio La Fortuna. We weren't expecting it to cost $18pp, but it was definitely worth it. It is a well-maintained 500-step descent down to (and back up from) the waterfall - still much easier than the hike we did to Montezuma falls.

- Take a dip in the volcano's natural jacuzzis. Whilst there are resort/spa options that cost $$$, we would recommend finding the free thermal hotsprings. We went early in the morning and had the whole place to ourselves for over half an hour. Pure bliss.

- Hike towards the Lava Trails at Mirador El Silencio. It is awesome to see the trails up close. The hike through the jungle is cool too!

- Stay at Sangregado Lodge. The rooms have the most incredible views of Arenal and you feel fully immersed in the jungle, with eagles and pelicans soaring by the balcony. The service is also amazing and free breakfast is included.

- We treated ourselves a bit and ate at a few restaurants rather than sodas. We would recommend Orgánico Food (great vegan food) and Mercadito Arenal (a covered market with tacos, burgers and cocktails).

- La Fortuna is a coffee-growing region. Definitely stop in at Café Metrópoli for a coffee with a rainforest/volcano view.

These include Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

La Fortuna has hanging bridges that sit over its beautiful jungles and let you watch wildlife from on high. One of the best places to see them is in the Mistico Arenal Park. Best things to do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica.

The Arenal area is a very popular travel destination in Costa Rica.It is known for its beautiful landscapes, adventure activities, access to natural hot springs, scenic hiking trails, volcanoes. It is located near the small town of La Fortuna. If you’re looking for amazing outdoor adventures, then La Fortuna is one of the best places to go in Costa Rica. Here is our list of amazing things to do in La Fortuna and Arenal, Costa Rica!

1. Soak in natural hot springs
One of the most popular attractions in La Fortuna is the natural hot springs in the area. Underground rivers are naturally heated by the Arenal Volcano, bubbling up into steamy hot mineral baths. There are many hot spring resorts in La Fortuna, one of the most popular ones is Tabacón Thermal Resort and Spa. If you are on a budget, there is a free natural hot spring literally next to Tabacon - across the street. That’s where the locals go and it’s called Rio Chollin.
2. Hike around Arenal Volcano and see lava fields

Arenal Volcano was completely dormant for many years until it unexpectedly erupted in 1968. This explosion destroyed the town at the base and killed many people. Up until 2010, Arenal was Costa Rica’s most active volcano. Since then it has been dormant for over 10 years. There are 2 parks where you can hike around this volcano for great views - Arenal Volcano National Park and the Arenal 1968 Volcano View and Lava Trails. Both parks take you through the lava fields around Arenal Volcano. We hiked in Arenal National Park and it was a cool hike. The entrance to the park was 15 dollars when we visited. It is recommended to arrive at the place with a 4 by 4 vehicle. The road in the park is gravel. The hike is easy and at the end of the trail, you can see hardened lava and take stairs to a lookout point where you can see Arenal in all its beauty and the lake on the other side. If you continue this loop hike instead of returning the way you came you will see a very tall Ceiba tree. It’s over four hundred years old. During our hike, we also saw some wild birds. The trails can be quite muddy in some places, so make sure you have proper footwear.

3. Visit La Fortuna Waterfall
This waterfall is located about 3 miles outside of the town with the same name as the waterfall La Fortuna. The waterfall is 246 feet tall (76 meters) and it’s located at the base of the dormant Cerro Chato volcano.
The entrance fee to the La Fortuna waterfall is 18 US dollars. There are nice facilities at the entrance including bathrooms, showers, and a gift shop.
Make sure to check out the waterfall and the canyon from the viewing platform before heading down, because it offers an amazing view.
You will need to take around 480 steps down with handrails and places to rest to reach the bottom of the waterfall. There are 2 places where you can swim - the pool below the waterfall and the pool further down the river.

4. Visit Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park.
Mistico Hanging Bridges is a must-see attraction if you're staying for a few days near Arenal. The 2-mile hiking trail takes through an amazingly beautiful jungle forest. The park has 6 hanging bridges that hang above the rainforest. The hike takes around 2 hours. Take it slow and enjoy this gorgeous location! The bridges are maintained really well. They are quite high, the highest bridge is approximately 230 feet above the ground, so if you don’t like heights, be mentally prepared! There are two options to do a self-guided tour which costs 26 US dollars or book a guided tour. The guide will show you wild animals that you most likely won’t notice yourself, but you will have to pay extra for the guide. We decided to save money and did a self-guided tour. Make sure to bring closed shoes. We heard that's a requirement. Also, bring enough water for the hike - the hike is not difficult, but it’s very humid. Also if you want to see more animals make sure to visit in the morning. It’s a great place to see Costa Rica’s wildlife.
