That was what we got asked a lot before moving to Colombia, and after being there for over 3 months, we felt like this was a video we just HAD to make.
We spent the majority of our time living in Medellín and Cartagena. And so we wanted to address the question, “As tourists living in Colombia, did Medellín feel dangerous to us?” Well, this was our experience.

Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.

For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

Why Colombians Are SICK of Foreigners...

Recently signs are going up all over the tourist zones of Medellin telling foreigners to pack up and go home.

The reason for this? Skyrocketing rental prices due to gentrification which have made living in certain neighborhoods impossible for locals.

This negative attitude towards foreigners has some people worried as tourism to Medellin, Colombia reaches all time highs and the rise of rental prices has no end in sight.

In this video I interviewed a few Medellin locals to find out what they thought about this situation and foreigners in general.

INTRO MUSIC - Spinning by Alex Britt

The rest of our music comes from Epidemic Sound.

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia.

Traveling Atlas was created to capture our moments of taking risk, building connections, and seeing the world. We will be staying in each country we visit for about a month in order to experience cultures to our maximum capacity and to inspire others that they can do the same. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.

Is Colombia Really Dangerous?

Is Colombia dangerous? Is Colombia safe for tourists? It's a question that is guaranteed to get me at least one thousand views on Youtube. Perhaps more, because the algorithm loves a good fear based, clickbait title to bring in fresh puppy eyes.

In my opinion all of Latin America seems to be a bit sketchy. Everywhere you go you will hear stories of cartel wars, theft, robberies, burglaries, and druggings. And yet, hardly any tourists you meet will say that anything like that has ever happened to them.

Leaving your house is dangerous. But I guarantee you the danger is primarily in your head. Besides, danger is fun.

Colombia Road Trip

We arrived in Colombia from Ecuador, we drove first toward Cano piedras : pink rivers in the middle of Colombian jungle, it was the worst road I drove in my life, I would not even call it a road but more a pathway. We encountered many militaries around there because it is located in FARC territory (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia).
Before getting to Cali, we decided to spend one day and to camp one night (with the rooftop tent) in Tatacoa desert, it is always very nice to fall asleep while admiring the milky way.
After spending few days in Cali, we headed toward Cocora Valley, The famous valley which is part of the Los Nevados National Natural Park where we can find the world’s tallest coconut trees.
What is amazing in Colombia is that driving from one place to another one you can admire the beautiful fauna and flora that this country has to offer, such as wild horses running or pink flamingos.
On our way from Bogota to Medellin we spent one day in rio cairo zip lining and tubbing. Before reaching Medellin we relaxed for a bit in Guatapé and its surrounding and of course we went climbing piedra del penol.
Our first step on the caribbean coast was Tintipan island located in the south of Cartagena.
Tintipan island is one island of San Bernardo archipel, it is a quite wild and small island, at 5pm all tourists disappear and we can enjoy the island almost alone. The island holds an incredible coral reef.
We then made quick stop in Cartagena, Santa Veronica, Barranquilla and Santa Marta before reaching the most famous Colombian national park : Tayrona.
Tayrona national park is the perfect picture of coconut trees forest by the seaside, we camped one night there, with the tent on the roof of the 4wd, it brings so much happiness waking up in middle of coconut trees with the sound of the waves.
From Riohacha its several hours drive through desert to reach Cabo de la Vela with not many road signs and of course no internet connections so you better have a satelitte app to at least know in which direction you are heading. We stayed a long time in the small village of Cabo de la Vela, life is so simple and easy there and everyone is very nice that you can be tempted to stay there forever. There are nice places to explore such as Pillon de Azucar or the Lighthouse but the main thing there is Kitesurfing, almost everyone there Kitesurfs, there is even a dog kitesurfing, conditions are just perfect to practice this sport : between 25 and 30 knots everyday with flat water. All best local riders come Kitesurfing for sunset, they do so many crazy flips it always look like a Kitesurf professional event.
