This is our last Indonesian street food video from the series! Today, we are in Yogyakarta or Jogja for its amazing street food. This city is packed with unique dishes of its own cuisine so join us for an insane street food tour of Jogja!

We start the day at a famous street food stall that was recently featured in Netflix Street Food: Lupis Mbah Satinem. This lupis (Rp. 10.000 / USD $0.63 each) consists of compressed rice cakes, shredded coconut and Javanese palm sugar. WOW! It was a perfect Jogja breakfast! Her stall is extremely famous and is only open from 6am - 8am so make sure that you start queuing early!

Next, we head to a stall serving another quintessential Jogja dish: Gudeg. Gudeg is made of jackfruit that has been stewed in Javanese palm sugar, gelatinous sambal and coconut milk served onto a bed of rice with some side dishes (Rp. 20.000 / USD $1.27 per plate). The atmosphere was perfect!

We drove across the city to a local restaurant serving Mangut Lele, which is grilled catfish with chilies. The setting was rural and we were able to watch all of the catfish being smoked with coconut husks. We also went into the kitchen to see the smoked catfish be stewed in a broth of super spicy chilies. You can choose different side dishes to have with the magnet lele. The catfish (Rp. 30.000 / USD $1.90 per plate) was delicious, smokey and spicy.

Later in the day we head to a shop serving Javanese noodle, Bakmi Jawa. We ordered two of their most popular dishes - Bakmi Goreng (dry) and Bakmi Godog (soup). What makes Javanese noodles special is that everything is cooked over charcoal, giving it a smokey aroma. Ingredients like noodles, chicken and duck eggs are cooked together and made fresh to order (Rp. 20.000 / USD $1.27 per plate).

Next, we head to a street food stall serving a Javanese drink - Wedang Ronde. Served by an aunty who is 85+ years old, this drink is for keeping warm in the winter. The drink is only served after 7:30pm until about 2am. The ronde consists of hot ginger water, glutinous rice flour with crushed peanuts, kolang-kalin (Palmyra seeds) and some peanuts (Rp. 6000 / USD $0.38 each). Be patient and kind to the aunty, she works very hard!

To finish our street food tour in Yogyakarta, we wanted to try one last drink - Kopi Jos which is coffee with a chunk of hot charcoal. It is an interesting process to watch. The charcoal is said to remove the bitterness from the coffee. The cafe was packed with locals late at night, and also serve lots of different kinds of sate if you’re still hungry! (Rp. 5000 / USD $0.32 per cup).

**We paid for all tours, ingredients, and food in this video**

Welcome to Yogyakarta - the unique culinary hotspot in the middle of Java, Indonesia. In this episode, we will be exploring the villages of Jogja and its delicious village food. This video was made possible with the help of our friend Arie!

We start the day by visiting a traditional village market. We browsed through the local ingredients and stopped to have breakfast. We had steamed corn with coconut to start our day. Next we went to a street food stall under a massive Banyan tree. We ordered their specialty Ice Cendol with fermented sticky rice.

Then we met a local family in their village near Sambiroto. All of the ingredients for our traditional Yogyakarta meal comes from their organic farm, including: blue pea flower, papaya flower and banana blossom. These ingredients were very unique to us. We also used ingredients such as tempe, tofu, kampong chicken and a variety of chilis and leaves.

We followed the family into their rustic kitchen to begin preparing the food from scratch. Their kitchen used wood fire which adds a smokey flavour to the dishes. Watching the chef/mother of the house chop, grate and grind the ingredients quickly was incredible! She taught us about where the ingredients come from - many from her farm and the rest from a local market. She also explained that she typically does not eat any meat on a regular basis, and that her diet is primarily vegetarian.

Once the dishes were ready, we all sat together in the family room and enjoyed the dishes. Everything was delicious and fresh! For dessert, we had fresh fruit including rambutan that we picked from the trees ourselves. We want to extend our thanks to Arie and the family for welcoming us into their home, working hard to make us delicious food and sharing a meal with us.

To visit the family’s cafe and village, check the info below!

This is episode 2 of our Indonesian Street Food series. Today we will be showing you the culinary hotspot of Padang in West Sumatra: BUKITTINGGI! We are driving from Padang City, and will be making food stops along the way to sample some delicious Indonesian snacks! This Indonesian road trip was made possible with the help of Roni’s Tours.

Roni’s Tours:

Our first stop of the day after Lembah Anai Waterfall was for Sate Padang. We ordered 3 different cuts of beef: lean muscle, heart, and intestine. It was cooked over charcoal and had a smoky aroma. It was served Padang style with a spicy sauce (Rp. 27.000 / USD $1.84 for 6 sticks). We also tried a traditional coconut rice dessert which are wrapped in banana leaves (Rp. 4000 / USD $0.27 each).

We continued toward Bukittinggi stopping for a traditional snack known as Bika. Bika are pastries made of rice flour, palm sugar and coconut, and banana. The cooking process involves placing the uncooked bika into a earthenware pot and then a bowl full of wood fire on top. These bika are SUPER delicious (Rp. 24.000 / USD $1.64 for 4 pieces).

Our next stop was in Bukkittingi. We visited an outdoor food market: Los Lambuang, which is known for Nasi Kapau. Nasi Kapau is similar to Nasi Padang in that the dishes served are Minangkabau. What makes them different is the serving style (to learn more about Nasi Padang, check out our previous episode). The stall we ordered from is called Uni Lis and we ordered Gulai Tambusu (intestines stuffed with egg + tofu served in curry), ayam rendang, dakak dakak (crunchy cassava cubes) as well as sambal (Rp. 48.000 / USD $3.28 per plate).

We went into the city centre to see Bukittinggi’s clocktower and city square. We ordered a soursop and dragonfruit smoothie (Rp. 10.000 / USD $0.68). Our next stop was Sianok Valley, which is a scenic canyon. The cliffs rise up to 150 meters! Our plan was to continue eating after taking in the valley’s views by drone, but we crashed the drone in a bamboo cluster above the cliffs. BIG thank you to Roni and Ujang (of Roni’s Tours) for finding it!

Since we spent all of our time finding the drone, our planned restaurants closed so we resorted to some street food style food! We found a man on the side of the road near Sianok Valley selling some DURIAN! It hits the spot when you are tired and hungry! (Rp. 15.000 / USD $1.02 each)

Stay tuned for the next episode. We will be heading DEEP into Harau Village to experience true Indonesian Kampung cooking! Subscribe and hit the bell icon. Set to “all notifications” so that you don’t miss an episode of our Indonesian series! Thanks for watching!

Welcome back to our series, Street Food Around the World in Taiwan. Today we are taking you to INDONESIA! Taiwan is home to many Indonesians, and with them they brought their culture and their amazing food!

We are starting our street food tour in “Little Indonesia”, which is a small neighbourhood outside of Taipei Main Station. Every Sunday, Indonesians gather here to socialize, relax and EAT! We first ordered Gado-gado (150 NTD / USD $5.07) which is an Indonesian salad with rice cakes, tempeh and is smothered in a spicy peanut sauce. We also ordered sate ayam (chicken sate) which was grilled over smoky coals and topped with a sate sauce and chilis (5 pieces - 200 NTD / USD $6.75) , and Teh Botol (30 NTD / USD $1.01) to wash it down . All of the vendors where extremely friendly.
To take home, we picked up a pack of kueh (small Indonesian cakes) that are stuffed with gula jawa (palm sugar) and covered in shredded coconut (50 NTD / USD $1.69), which are great to eat as a breakfast snack.
Later, we visit a modern Indonesian restaurant for a few different dishes. We ordered rendang daging (beef), ayam bumbu rujak (chili chicken), turmeric rice, and curry vegetables. The food was unfortunately missing a few key ingredients and spices that really make Indonesian food what it is. The true flavour was less reminiscent of Indonesian food, and more like Taiwanese food. The entire meal cost 890 NTD (USD $30.90), which we thought was slightly too expensive.

To end the day of eating amazing Indonesian food, we went to a local stall far in the south of Taipei to have Martabak Manis (sweet martabak). This martabak was made in the most authentic way. The batter was slightly undercooked, it was SMOTHERED in butter, chocolate, cheese and condensed milk. And of course, more butter on top (120 NTD / USD $4.05). This is one dessert we cannot stop eating whenever we are in Indonesia, and we are so happy to have found this hidden gem in Taiwan.

Restaurant Info:

Muslim Street Food | UYGHUR CHINESE Homemade Food + HALAL Street Food in Kyrgyzstan!

Use Coupon Code: chopsticktravel to get 10% off your Manta Sleep!

We visited Kyrgyzstan with our friends from Visit Karakol! Book your next adventure tour with them in Kyrgyzstan, check them out:

Today’s episode in Kyrgyzstan is very special. We are exploring the cultures, traditions and cuisine of the Muslim Chinese communities in Kyrgyzstan. The two ethnic communities are the Uyghurs and the Dungans. Both groups have their own unique history and come from very different places in China, but many Uyghurs and Dungans have resettled throughout Central Asia, bringing their culture with them.

We are starting the day by visiting a local market in Karakol. Here, there is an alleyway that is lined with stalls serving Ashlan fu. Ashlan fu is a cold noodle & starch dish, with tomato, eggs, herbs, chilies, and vinegar drizzled over top. It is a Dungan specialty.

Nearby, we visited the Dungan Mosque. Although this building has many characteristics of a Chinese temple on the outside, it resembled a mosque on the inside. The mosque was originally constructed in 1910 without the use of nails.

We then went to a local Uyghur family’s home for lunch. The family welcomed us with tea and started preparing Uyghur food. The first dish was Suyuk ash, which is a Uyghur handmade noodle soup. The next dish was a hot salad, fried eggs with peppers and ju cai (Chinese chives).

Next up, the family prepared 3 different types of manti - beef, ju cai, and pumpkin. These were all prepared by hand and steamed in baskets. And for dessert, the family kindly prepared Sangza, which is Uyghur fried dough twists.

It was truly a wonderful opportunity to spend time with this Uyghur family, and sharing a meal with them. We would like to give a massive thank you to Farhat and his family for hosting us and making such delicious Uyghur dishes.

Let us know in the comments which dish you thought looked more delicious! Stay tuned and subscribe because we more unique videos coming from Kyrgyzstan very soon! Thanks so much to our partners at Visit Karakol for making this series possible!

Nasi Padang - AMAZING Indonesian Food - Beef Rendang and Gulai Otak!

►Read more about this Nasi Padang restaurant here:

I can still remember my first time to ever eat Nasi Padang, when I visited the island of Sumatra back in 2009. I had a plate of rice, piled high with a variety of different curry dishes and chili filled dishes. The combination of flavors and the variety of dishes on my plate just astounded me, and my taste buds rejoiced. Until now, Nasi Padang has always remained one of my favorite Indonesian food meals to eat. And along with being very common throughout Sumatra, in Jakarta, Padang food is perhaps one of the most beloved meals as well, and you’ll find hundreds of Nasi Padang restaurants in the city.

There are two ways to eat Nasi Padang. If you go to a street food stall they normally served it in the pesan way, where you get a plate of rice, and designate which curries and dishes you’d like to eat, and they are all placed on top of your rice - so you’ve got a one plate meal. And this is the way that I’d normally always eating Nasi Padang. But when you go to a nicer sit down restaurant, still very local, they often serve it in the hidang method, where as soon as you sit down, you’re given a variety of all the different dishes they have prepared, and they set them all in front of you on your table. You don’t need to eat everything they give you, but you pay for what you eat, and don’t pay for what you don’t eat. It’s truly a magical way to have a meal, to see all the different dishes and varieties of ingredients all laid before you. The toughest part is trying to decide what to eat.

When I was in Jakarta, thanks to the help of Renis, who invited Ying and I to come to her favorite Nasi Padang Indonesian food restaurant in Jakarta, we ate at Rumah Makan Surya Masakan Padang. What I liked about this restaurant, as opposed to others I ate in Jakarta, is that it seemed not so much like a chain, but it had more character to it. The restaurant is known for its makan Padang, Padang food, and as soon as we arrived, I could smell the aroma of the incredible dishes.

The beef rendang is a famous Indonesian food that’s commonly served at Nasi Padang restaurants, and it’s a dish you don’t want to miss. The combination of chilies and herbs, mixed with desiccated coconut, and caked onto each piece of meat, makes it incredible. Beef rendang is one of the greatest Indonesian dishes. Additionally, another common Indonesian Padang food that you’ll find is gulai otak, which is brain curry, usually made with cow brains. The cow brains are incredibly creamy and soft, and then it was within a very creamy coconut milk based curry. I’m also a huge fan of the different types of fresh chilies and sambals that you each along with your rice and curry when you eat Nasi Padang. Rumah Makan Surya Masakan Padang is an amazing restaurant in Jakarta, and I fully loved it.

Rumah Makan Surya Masakan Padang

Crazy Jogja (Yogyakarta) Street Food - STINK BEANS, JACKFRUIT STEW & CHICKEN FEET NOODLE SOUP!!

Jogja (Yogyakarta), Indonesia is one of the historic and architecturally significant cities in all of Asia. It was an eye-dazzling visit and full of unique and super friendly people. It was my first trip to Indonesia in December and January 2019-2020, and Jogja is actually where I spent New Year's Eve.

However instead of staying up to see night life and fireworks, etc., I went to bed early and got up at 3am on New Year's Day morning to head to the Borobudur Temple (ancient Buddhist temple) for an epic sunrise and amazing pics and video which you will see in this video. This whole site was lost and abandoned for centuries before being rediscovered.
SO WORTH IT!

Other amazing sites included; Prambanan Hindu Temple, Yogyakarta Ancient City, Taman Sari, and the active Mount Merapi Volcano. Plus, there were so many other sites we didn't have time to see, but will have to come back for next time!!

Of course I couldn't wait to eat everything, and experience street food life, and try out all the local delicacies like STINK BEANS (petai or pete)!! ... Spoiler: they were THE BEST!!

So what did we eat on this Jogja (Yogyakarta) Street Food Tour?

1. Gudeg (Jackfruit stew traditionally eaten at breakfast)
2. Pete (Stink beans)
3. Nasi Goreng (Indonesian style fried rice)
4. Es Campur (Indonesian ice dessert)
5. Mie Ayam / Soto Ayam / Soto Ceker (Chicken feet & curry noodle soup)
and more ...

We start our food hunting with one of the best meals we ate during our time in Jogja: sate klathak at Satay Klathak Pak Pong. This restaurant specialises in all things kambing or goat. We eat the satay klathak- goat meat threaded onto bicycle spoke skewers, seasoned lightly with salt and pepper and then cooked over hot charcoal together with tengkleng a traditional stew made up of goat ribs, bones and offal. Finger licking good!

We then head for rujak ice cream from a tiny street stall which serves its rujak (local fruit salad) topped with homemade ice cream. Refreshing and sweet- this place is a locals favourite.

In the evening we head to a popular noodle spot for Javanese fried noodles. We eat the bakmi godhog campur which is made up of vermicelli, yellow noodles and chicken served in a flavoursome chicken broth as well as the magelangan, a wok tossed concoction made up of both rice and noodles. This is comfort food at its finest.

To finish we hunt down a street food stall selling wedang ronde, a local dessert made up of peanut stuffed glutinous rice dumplings, palm fruit, peanuts and tiny cubes of bread in a spicy ginger broth. An epic day of food hunting!

Where we ate:

Satay Klathak (Bicycle spoke goat skewers) and tengkleng (goat bone stew) at Satay Klathak Pak Pong, Jalan Imogiri Timur Km. 10, Wonokromo, Pleret, Jejeran II, Wonokromo, Pleret, Bantul, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta 55791. Open daily 9:00am to 11:30pm.

Rujak es krim at Rujak Ice Cream Pak Nardi, Jl. Harjowinatan, Purwokinanti, Pakualaman, Kota Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta 55166. Open daily 8:00am to 3:00pm.

Bakmi godhog (soupy noodles) and Magelangan (rice and noodles mix) at Bakmi dan Nasi Goreng Pak Pele, JL. Pojok Tenggara Alun-Alun Utara, Panembahan, Kraton, Kota Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta 55131. Open daily 4:00pm to 11:00pm.

Wedang Ronde at Ronde Lek Dhie, Jalan Dagen No.7-12, Sosromenduran, Gedong Tengen, Sosromenduran, Gedong Tengen, Kota Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta 55271. Open 4:30pm to midnight.

Gudeg food tour in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Gudeg is a traditional food from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Made from young Nangka (jack fruit) that is boiled for several hours with palm sugar, and coconut milk.
Typically served with white rice, chicken, hard-boiled egg, tofu and/or tempeh, and a stew made of crisp beef skins (sambal goreng krecek). It is a tasty spicy dish that is a must try if visiting Indonesia.
While in Yogyakarta I had a behind the scenes tour in the kitchen of the largest Gudeg seller, Gudeg Yu Djum in the city.
There were women sitting on the floor ripping leaves to be used as plates, shirtless men walking around with shovels full of hot coals, stoking the hot fires under boiling cauldrons of coconut milk and jack fruit. One man made coconut milk while others sat and squatted in a room filled with buckets of water and over 300 chickens that they were preparing to be cooked. An older lady sat near the ground making their famous sambal sauce, keeping an eye on the boiling eggs while another man ground spices. There was enough smoke in the air to make you cry and the heat was an intensity that I don't want to experience again. It was a bit of a culture shock to me to see the way their kitchen was and how they prepared the food, but it was an experience I am glad that I got to have. One of the craziest things I have ever seen and the finished product tasted damn good too.
