Katz's Makes New York's Most Legendary Pastrami On Rye | Legendary Eats

Katz's Delicatessen is one of New York City's longest-treasured destinations. The 132-year-old deli is famous for pastrami on rye, a plate that requires about a month's attention. The meat is cured for three to four weeks, then steamed, boiled, and expertly carved into thin slices before it's layered between rye bread with deli mustard. But ever since restaurants and bars shut down for dine-in service, Katz's has been relying solely on pickup and delivery orders to keep business going. Fortunately, the deli has prevented laying off employees by assigning new jobs to busboys and waiters without any customers to serve.

Katz Deli New York's Most Legendary Pastrami Sandwich

Take a look at New York's most legendary pastrami sandwich delicatessen.

In 1888, a small deli by the name of Iceland Brothers was established on Ludlow Street in New York’s Lower East Side by the Iceland brothers. Upon the arrival of Willy Katz in 1903, the name of the store was officially changed to Iceland & Katz. Willy’s cousin Benny joined him in 1910, buying out the Iceland brothers to officially form Katz’s Delicatessen. Their landsman Harry Tarowsky bought into the partnership in April 1917. Katz’s Deli was moved across the street, to its present location, during the construction of the subway system. The vacant lot on Houston Street (pronounced House-ton after a Dutch emigrant of the same name) was home to barrels of meat and pickles until the present storefront facade was added between 1946-49.

Katz's Deli New York City: Best Corned Beef Sandwich

Matthew, Host of The Eater's Guide, is on the Lower East Side, outside the legendary Katz’s Delicatessen—New York City’s oldest deli, and home to one of the best corned beef sandwiches in the world. Katz’s has been serving up iconic sandwiches since 1888, drawing in thousands of visitors every week from all corners of the globe.

As you can see, this place is so popular that there’s usually a line down Houston Street. And let me tell you, waiting in line is all part of the Katz’s experience—it builds up the anticipation and makes that first bite even better.

Once inside, you’re handed a ticket, and you need to keep track of this. It logs everything you order, and if you lose it, you’re looking at a $50 fee. So, hold onto it until it’s time to pay up at the register—cash preferred.

Navigating the counters is part of the fun here. There are separate stations depending on what you’re craving. The grill’s got cheesesteaks, burgers, and hot dogs. Head to the middle counters for Katz’s famous sandwiches, and the end counter for drinks and sides. It’s a bit like organized chaos but adds to the magic of Katz’s.

And for me, it’s all about a classic New Yorker order: corned beef on rye with mustard on both sides. Just like my family has always done it. This sandwich is the real deal.

Watching the cutters work their magic is like a show on Broadway. Each piece of corned beef is hand-sliced with skill and precision. These guys are fast, and each slice is just the right thickness. Their technique is what makes this sandwich unforgettable.

Look at that stack! This sandwich is piled high with tender, juicy corned beef, served with a side of Katz’s famous house-brined pickles. The meat is moist, fragrant, and has this fine-grained texture thanks to a 30-day cure. And with that house mustard—it’s the perfect combination of flavors.

The bread-to-meat ratio here is epic—meaning, yes, it’s going to get messy. Everyone has the same issue here, but that’s Katz’s for you! It’s a bit of a challenge, but it’s worth every bite.

Katz’s is more than a deli. It’s a cultural landmark, and there’s something special about enjoying a corned beef sandwich here, surrounded by locals, tourists, and regulars who’ve been coming for years. This place has been here for over 130 years—it’s like a piece of living history.

When I used to drink soda, a Dr. Brown’s was my go-to. Nothing pairs better with that salty, savory corned beef.

Katz’s is famous in more ways than one—it was the backdrop of that When Harry Met Sally scene. And the walls here are covered with photos of celebrities and Hollywood legends who’ve come here to get their hands on a Katz’s sandwich. This place is as much a part of New York as the skyline.

Katz’s Deli is more than just a place to eat. It’s a family-owned institution, a place filled with history, and a piece of New York City that will never be duplicated. From the neon signage to the nostalgic feel of the place, every visit to Katz’s is like stepping back in time.

Thanks for coming along with me to Katz’s today! If you’re ever in NYC, don’t miss this spot. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more food adventures. Until next time, keep exploring, keep eating, and enjoy every bite!

One of the city's few remaining Jewish delis, Katz's has been serving griddled all-beef pups (and world-famous pastrami) since before your bubbe was born.

Try and find a more perfectly marbleized, moist, meaty and delicious piece of pastrami anywhere. You can’t. This right here is the best in the business. Enjoy. And if you really want to get crazy, come for breakfast and get the pastrami omelette; it’s insane.

One of the last-standing, old-time Eastern European spots on the Lower East Side, Katz’s is a true NY institution. It’s crowded, crazy and packed with a panoply of characters weirder than a jury duty pool. Tourists, hipsters, blue hairs and everybody in between flock here, so come on off-hours.

Reuben 📍Katz's Delicatessen NYC

Maybe THE most famous NYC spot, we're personally not sure the sandwiches justify the $25 price tag (in spite of their size). Nevertheless, it's a classic for a reason.Pictured is a Reuben on club bread.

My visit to the legendary Katz Deli, NYC

In this video I'm trying a Pastrami on Rye at the legendary original Katz Deli 205 E Houston St, New York, NY 10002. According to my research the brothers Morris and Hyman Iceland established what is now called Katz's Delicatessen on Ludlow Street in New York's Lower East Side. Upon the arrival of Willy Katz in 1903, the deli's name was changed from Iceland Brothers to Iceland & Katz. Willy's cousin Benny joined him in 1910, buying out the business Iceland brothers to form what is now known as Katz's Delicatessen.
The deli is a huge tourist attraction and attracts food vloggers like myself from all over the world. They also have a very strict ordering process so do your research before going and by all means hold onto the ticket they give you at the door for dear life. You will need that ticket to order and to get out of the building. Literally. The Cutter's at the counter are happy to let you sample the various meats before ordering and they're also very generous with the portion sizes (although the sandwiches aren't cheap).
You might get a bit of sticker shock since the average sandwich is $20 and up. Mine was $24 and I could of easily shared it with my wife but lucky for me she doesn't like Pastrami lol.

Anthony Bourdain’s NYC favorites : Katz’s

Anthony Bourdain’s favorite NYC restaurants - Katz’s Delicatessen

Ahead of Bourdain Day this weekend, we’re visiting a few of the places Tony raved about in his home city of New York.

Katz’s Deli opened in 1888 and has been serving the Lower East Side ever since! Famous for their pastrami sandwiches (and appearing in Harry Met Sally), Bourdain’s go to order was pastrami on rye with brown mustard, sour pickles and a can of cream soda.

What trip to New York can be complete without visiting the legendary Katz's Delicatessen. Fully embracing the tourist mindset, I spent a wonderful morning exploring the Manhattan Chinatown and then made my way to Katz's Deli. I've been anticipating trying this iconic landmark in New York City. Would this be a tourist trap? Well, there's one way to find out, and in the process, I can get a nice meal as well.

One thing to note on this visit, was the orders were not cheap, but I was fully aware of the tourist premium one may encounter. Very happy to see that the food was fantastic and the people were even better!

New York City Food Tour : HUGE Pastrami Sandwich at Katz’s Deli and The Halal Guys!

Join me on this delicious New York City food tour!

►Get a t-shirt here:

New York City is an incredible food city because of the diversity of the food available. On this New York City food tour we started off the day by going to one of the most famous restaurants in NYC, Katz's Delicatessen to eat pastrami. Next, we ate at a restaurants in New York City Chinatown called Spicy Village for an amazing pan of “Spicy Big Tray Chicken,” and for dinner I had chicken over rice from The Halal Guys, one of the most popular New York City street foods.

1:21 Katz's Delicatessen - There are few places in New York City for food as famous as Katz's Delicatessen, an absolute legendary deli in the city. Although it’s well overpriced, because it’s such a heritage NYC institution, it’s one of the must eat restaurants in the city. I arrived early in the morning, hoping to beat the crowds, which I did (go for breakfast if you want to avoid lines). After a little contemplation, I decided to go for the reuben with pastrami and a half of corned beef. The corned beef was alright, but the reuben with pastrami was incredible. Total price - $48.56

13:32 Spicy Village - Next up on this New York City food tour my wife and I walked around New York City Chinatown and eventually found our way over to a restaurant called Spicy Village (thanks to Monty for this recommendation). The one dish I mainly wanted to eat at Spicy Village was the Spicy big tray chicken, a pan of fried chicken parts and noodles in a spicy and mouth numbing broth. It was everything I had hoped for and more, and it was one of the best foods I ate in New York City! Total price - $22 - But along with the spicy big tray chicken we had an extra dish as well.

18:32 Times Square - One of the busiest and most recognized squares in the world is Times Square in New York City. So in the afternoon, happy and full of Spicy Village and Katz’s Deli, we walked over to Times Square to enjoy the people watching and the ridiculous amount of lights and action.

20:19 The Halal Guys - While walking through Times Square I remembered that one of the most popular New York City street food stalls wasn’t too far away. So we walked over to The Halal Guys, and I ordered chicken over rice. The chicken over rice itself is prepared pretty plain, but the flavor in The Halal Guys is all in the white and red sauce, both of which are incredibly flavorful and delicious. It was my first time to eat at The Halal Guys, and I’m pretty happy I did. Chicken over rice - $7

It was a great first full day in New York City with some incredibly delicious food. Probably my favorite dish of the day was the spicy big tray chicken from Spicy Village, but all the food was so food.
