East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until 28 November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin) declared the territory's independence. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by the Indonesian military, and was declared as the country's 27th province the following year. The Indonesian occupation of East Timor was characterised by a highly violent, decades-long conflict between separatist groups (especially Fretilin) and the Indonesian military. East Timor - Officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste,Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a country in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island surrounded by Indonesian West Timor. Australia is the country's southern neighbour, separated by the Timor Sea. The country's size is about 15,007 km2 (5,794 sq mi)
Indonesian occupation (1975–1999) Indonesia's occupation of East Timor was marked by violence and brutality. A detailed statistical report prepared for the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation in East Timor cited a minimum bound of 102,800 conflict-related deaths in the period 1974–1999, namely, approximately 18,600 killings and 84,200 excess deaths from hunger and illness, with an estimated figure based on Portuguese, Indonesian and Catholic Church data of approximately 200,000 deaths. The East Timorese guerrilla force (Forças Armadas da Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste, Falintil) fought a campaign against the Indonesian forces from 1975 to 1998. José Ramos-Horta, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner, second President of East Timor The 1991 Dili Massacre was a turning point for the independence cause and an East Timor solidarity movement grew in Portugal, the Philippines, Australia, and other Western countries. Following the resignation of Indonesian President Suharto, a UN-sponsored agreement between Indonesia and Portugal allowed for a UN-supervised popular referendum in August 1999. A clear vote for independence was met with a punitive campaign of violence by East Timorese pro-integration

How to spend 24-hours in Dili, capital of one of the newest countries in the world.
After a short hop aboard Nam Air from Bali, I land in sleepy Dili. The Hotel Timor is a good base to explore the city on foot, where I see the Presidential Palace, the Santa Cruz Massacre Memorial, the port area and a church. I see lots of great statues along the way, too.
Then I catch a taxi to the Christ monument, and make it to the top to admire the view. After a brief stop by Dili Lighthouse, I end my day in Timor Plaza, where I enjoy a cooling beer in a rooftop restaurant.

We rode our scooter just 40 minutes north of Dili to reach this absolutely beautiful mangrove forest at Hera. After spending a lovely morning there, we headed towards the mountains behind Dili where we visited the Dare Cafe and Memorial! It has one of the best views of the capital city and the coastline, and also has cooler weather than the rest of the country!

But to get independence, it had to go through some real shiiiii...
I arrived there on the day of a solar eclipse. Outside of the rare Australian who got on the wrong flight to Bali, tourists don't come here. In fact, it's hard to even take out money. This was gonna be a weekend of adventure, and I had no idea what to expect. Enjoy the ride.

Sehari jalan-jalan melihat kota Dili yang jadi ibukota negara Timor Leste menarik sih. Ada beberapa tempat menarik yang bisa dikunjungi. Sebagai pecinta laut, saya suka sekali denga topografi dari kota Dili ini. Perbukitan yang cantik dipadu dengan birunya laut yang indah.
Cuma satu yang menjadi kendala saya dan mas @AhmadWildani waktu itu, cuaca panas. NTT dan Timor Leste ini sepertinya punya stok matahari yang banyak sekali, sehingga panasnya ampun-ampunan. Karena kondisi yang lepek dengan keringat, membuat badan rasanya gak enak sekali. Waktu yang tepat untuk berjalan-jalan mengelilingi kota Dili ini adalah ketika pagi dan sore hari, pada saat belum terasa panas mataharinya.
Sorenya kami mengunjungi Cristo Rei, patung Kristus Raja yang dibangun di atas bukit Fatucama. Pemandangan dari atas cristo rei ini bagus sekali kawan, terlebih ketika senja tiba. Wah, kalian harus cobain sendiri ya.

Top best places to visit in Dili, East Timor
Dili lies on the northern coast of Timor Island, the easternmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands.
Dili is the largest city, chief port and commercial center of East Timor and also is the newest Asian capital.
Although there are not many tourist attractions in town but there are some interesting buildings like:
The Government Palace,
The Presidential Palace,
And the headquarter of the Ministry of Defense.
The most characteristic landmark is the Statue of Jesus that is constructed on a headland to the east of town.
The statue is about 27m tall and stands on a globe of earth and the view from across the bay is spectacular.
Of similar type but less famous is the Statue of John Paul II, located on the western side of the city.
Among the few places of worship, two are note worthy:
Motael Church
And An Nur Mosque.
East Timor is a developing country. It’s not cheap and there is much to be done.
Dili is a safe, charming, lazy little coastal city surrounded by wild nature.
