Dominica

Firstly, lets start off with what Dominica isn't. It's not the Dominican Republic and it's not your cliché Caribbean island. Consider it Costa Rica of the Caribbean, at least in my eyes. There is no other island in this sector that remotely resembles the sheer topography wow factor that Dominica possesses. This mountainous paradise is mostly volcanic and has very few manicured beaches therefore tourism has developed rather slowly. It has a dense rain forest, freshwater lakes, hot springs and jaw dropping waterfalls - I'm talkin' national geographic status! I managed to capture some shaky amateurish video of an uncharted black sand beach not even the locals or taxi drivers know about. We tend, I think, to romanticize poverty when it's surrounded by natural beauty. It's a country that's proud of it's indigenous population, its lifestyle make its people some of the happiest in the world from what I gather. Barely scraping by on banana, aloe and soap exports this impoverished country welcomes the true eco-tourists who come to gape. Despite Dominica being a very underdeveloped island not always preferable for the average traveler, I do plan on revisiting to spend more time exploring the hidden gems for your post viewing pleasure.

Discover the Majestic Nature Island That Is Dominica

No, it’s not the Dominican Republic; welcome to Dominica, the nature island! #travel #dominica #island

Dominica is situated between Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean, and is 300 square miles of paradise. With the highest concentration of dormant volcanoes in the world, there’s an endless supply of hot springs and warm streams and even warm bubbles caressing you from the ocean floor. Two-thirds of the island is covered in tropical rainforest, resulting in the lushest landscapes and most magnificent canyons and waterfalls you’ll ever see.

There were so many highlights on our trip to Dominica, but the main ones we featured in this video were the hike to Boiling Lake in the UNESCO-listed Morne Trois Pitons National Park and seeing sperm whales in the open ocean—Earth’s largest toothed predator—right up close. What set Dominica apart from everywhere else is that you’ll have these spectacular beaches, waterfalls, hot springs, and natural wonders all to yourself. And last but definitely not least, you’ll get to meet some of the kindest and most warmhearted people on the planet!

Here Are 8 Great Reasons To Travel to Dominica Right Now

There are so many things we love about Dominica it’s hard to pare them down to eight, but here goes:

#8: Start with canyoning in some of the lushest gorges you’ve ever seen. #7: Then grab a bush rum, cane liquor mixed with local herbs. #6: When you’re ready, the hike to Boiling Lake awaits. #5: And you can find more amazing hikes pretty much anywhere you go on the island. #4: Many of these hikes lead you to mystical waterfalls. #3: And ditto that for hot springs. #2: The people here in Dominica are hands down some of the kindest and warmest hosts you’ll find anywhere. #1: And finally, number one: Nothing can prepare you for seeing sperm whales up close. Dominica is the only place on Earth where they live year round, which gives you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience these amazing marine mammals out in the wild. #travel #dominica #adventure

These are just some of the reasons we love Dominica. As soon as you get here, you’ll find your own.

Why are there two countries named Dominica, why do Dominica and the Dominican Republic have the same name? So many countries have similar names. Like the Dominican Republic and Dominica.

Dominica on the Move 3 | 4K Timelapse Film

I've been working on this timelapse film for several months now, and Dominica on the Move 3 is finally ready for release!

I sought to create something different from my previous timelapse projects. It needed to do more than just show off Dominica's natural beauty; I also wanted to incorporate the human element, to showcase life on the island.

Dominica is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and I'm happy to release this film. I am already excited about making another one to incorporate features and locations absent from this one, but in the meantime, please enjoy Dominica on the Move 3.

The film itself is actually just 4 minutes long, but you'll see that this video runs for 6 minutes. That's because I've added lots of behind-the-scenes and unused footage at the end, to show a bit of the process involved.

For more information, gear, outtakes and fun facts, please check out my blog post at:

Special thanks to Don Carli for allowing me to use his song Waitukubuli in this project. Here's a link to watch his lyric video:

Hello! We're Alex and Lars. We've been living aboard our 37 foot sailboat, Navika for 2.5 years and are sailing full time. We started our journey in the South of France, and sailed around the Mediterranean for 2 years before sailing across the Atlantic at the beginning of 2022. Now we're in the Caribbean and who knows where the wind will blow us to next! Follow along as we document the highs and lows of our life on the water and share the incredible places we get to visit.

DOMINICA VS HURRICANE MARIA - THE BEAUTY & THE BEAST

The title of this song is Diamante - the Italian word for diamond. This also happens to be the name of the singer, Zucchero's, beloved grandmother. The word, Domenica (Italian for Sunday), features prominently in the song lyrics.

In the Caribbean, there's a beautiful island called Dominica - the Latin word for Sunday. Apart from the obvious similarity in names, the song has nothing to do with the island.

Yet, the pathos, and also the hope, conveyed by the music and lyrics of this Zucchero/Randy Crawford duet, aptly describes the mood among Dominicans, post-Hurricane Maria: one of heartbreak, forlornness and disbelief, as well as determination, given that their carefully-treasured legacy now lies in ruins.

As the country's Prime Minister, The Honorable Roosevelt B. Douglas, once put it: “From sunrise to sunset, Dominica presents a magnificent palette of color and an endless array of beauty…Mother Nature has blessed our country with remarkable mountain ranges, towering waterfalls, pristine rivers and spectacular attractions. Our country is a land of unique experiences, inspiring scenery and memorable activities - above and below the sea.”

I, myself, have often considered Dominica the Santorini of the Caribbean. This jewel of an island reportedly owes its name to Christopher Columbus, who first sighted it on Sunday 3rd November, 1493. Dominicans assert it's the only Caribbean island likely to still be recognizable to Columbus - until yesterday, that is, Monday, September 18, 2017 - because, unlike other Caribbean islands, its geography has not been significantly re-scaped in the over 500 years since its discovery...

Then came this beast of a hurricane - Category 5 MARIA - complete with [evil] pinhole eye... And the rest is history...

But a history that shall be re-written, they say - and a much better story told!

My sympathies, condolences and best wishes to the people of Dominica, and to all those affected by the onslaught of natural disasters occurring fast and furious throughout the earth, evoking eschatological terms like apocalyptic, last days and end times, which are, in fact, not too far off, when viewed in the light of Scripture...such as the one at Revelation 11:18, where the fearsome Armageddon is linked to those ruining the earth. (Did someone say climate change/global warming?)
