A lot of tourists rush right through Guatemala City when they first land in the airport of Guatemala. The common perception is that it's an ugly, deserted, and boring city.
Well, I'm here to tell you that it's not true. Guatemala City has a few Zones, or neighborhoods, that are very high end. In fact, it reminded me of the fancy parts of Medellin, Bogota, Mexico City, and other large Latin American cities. Heck, some parts even reminded me of North American cities like Boston and NYC

Thanks to my new friend, we visit both ends of Guatemala City learning more about the neighborhoods, Local markets and cultural music. When you think of Guatemala, there is a word you may not think of; luxury. But you should. There are some really upscale areas. Especially in the capital. Zone 10 is where some of the richest in the country relax and play. It is home to the Oakland Mall, which was decked out in Christmas lights and decorations. And it was only October. We were able to stop into two different cafes to try some of the premier coffee of Guatemala. Where the level of detail and care was impeccable. We also explored an area that EVERYONE said was obligatory when visiting Ciudad de Guatemala; Cayalá.

Solo in Guatemala's Most Violent Cartel Hood! (Zone-18)????????
Guatemala City is divided into different zones. The biggest and most violent is Zone 18. It is fully controlled by gang members (Mara 18) and every local I asked warned me not to visit this place at all. Not even its small central market.
I fully respect their advice which is for my own good, but I am very curious to see with my own eyes what this Hood Cartel looks like and most importantly what the locals there have to say about the most dangerous place in Guatemala City.

Zone 15 immediately gave us rich England vibes, big houses, beautiful landscapes, the whole area is just so calming an so stunning, I would definitely live here long term, so safe, schools, nurseries, shops, restaurants, cafes. One of the most affluent areas of Guatemala City and we FELL IN LOVE!! ❤️
