Railroad Signaling Explained: How A Signal System Works at a Control Point

Another of the Forbidden Videos. This is the first in a series of how different parts of the signal system work and what they do. These videos were shot over the course of about a year and in many different places so bear with me on the scenery changes! Also, this is different than the piece I did on what railroad signals mean but I will link that video here.
This first one will deal with how a Control Point works. Control Points are locations controlled remotely by a dispatcher and are the vital points in keeping trains running safely and efficiently in both directions.
I will not get into the minutia of code descriptions, nomenclatures, circuitry descriptions or circuit plans. Just the basic functions of control and support equipment.
So, join me for a primer on railroad signalling at a control point!

Decoding Railroad Jargon

I've gotten a lot of questions about this so... here's an attempt at explaining what I know about railroad radio jargon, just a few examples.

Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures

Highway agencies typically rely on complaints or manual data collection to identify the need for signal retiming projects and their outcomes. These projects are typically scheduled on a 3- to 5-year cycle, at a cost of approximately $4,500 per intersection. The costs and effort associated with collecting performance data translates into congestion, reduced safety, and increased delays for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

That's where automated traffic signal performance measures come in. They will revolutionize the management of traffic signals by providing the high-resolution data needed to actively manage performance. High-quality service can be delivered to customers with significant cost savings to agency maintenance and operations. A number of implementation options are available, ranging from a low-cost, open-source code framework to a fully integrated traffic signal system.

This breakout session on Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPMs) was recorded at the Federal Highway Administration’s Every Day Counts (EDC) Regional Summits in the fall of 2016. The Summits provided transportation professionals the opportunity to learn about the 11 innovations promoted through EDC-4, exchange ideas with their agency and industry counterparts in neighboring States, and provide feedback to FHWA on the support and resources needed to adopt the innovations in their own States.

Inside Europe's Busiest Air Traffic Control - Amsterdam

Amsterdam is Europe’s busiest airport, in terms of movements and top 3 in terms of passenger numbers. In 2018, it handled over 70 million passengers, with over 500,000 movements. I visited the Air Traffic Control Tower and Radar Centre in Amsterdam, to find out how the air traffic is managed in one of the busiest European Airports.

The ATC tower controller explains all the working positions, runway configurations and movements inside the ATC tower at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. I was given a behind the scene tour and enjoyed some awesome plane spotting views up in the 101m tower.

Then, I visited the LVNL Radar Centre. A controller explains how the radar controls work. In fact, once the plane leaves the gate it will remain in contact with the tower and many different area controls until it lands and arrives at the gate. The visit gave me a great insight as to how Air Traffic Control works in today’s crowded skies.

Railroad Signals Explained: Part 2

Awhile back I did a video on what railroad signals mean and how they differ from highway traffic signals. I stuck with the basic automatic mainline signals and included an approach diverging route signal as information on distant diverging route signals at control points.
Well, a subscriber requested I do a follow-up piece on the signals at control points, so I did! It took awhile (which I'll explain in the video) but I finally got it all done.
This video will go over the various aspects and indications of manual signals at control points.
So, join me for part two of What Railroad Signals Mean!

What's on the Wireless? Automating RF Signal Identification

Most organisations want to monitor wireless devices within their environment, but, with a growing number of disparate low cost wireless technologies appearing on the market, the scale of this task can be unmanageable.

Screaming Channels: When Electromagnetic Side Channels Meet Radio Transceivers

In this talk, we show that although isolation of digital and analog components is sufficient for those chips to work, it's often insufficient for them to be used securely. This leads to novel side-channel attacks that can break cryptography implemented in mixed-design chips over potentially large distances.

RMS Titanic SOS

The final radiotelegraph transmissions from the Titanic. This recording is in all likelihood a simulation, but its exact origin is not known. It is notable for the authentic-sounding rotary spark gap tone and also for the code speed-- rather quick for a hand key! A video of the keying waveform is provided for further analysis.

The last Morse code maritime radio station in North America | Bartell's Backroads

1999 marked the last time a commercial Morse code message was supposedly transmitted to ships at sea. However, if you travel on the backroads to Point Reyes, Morse code is alive and well at KPH Maritime Radio Station thanks to the help of Maritime Radio Historical Society and National Park Service.
