Today we had the opportunity to visit the Hobbiton New Zealand movie set. Kara and I are both BIG Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fans so when we started to plan our trip to New Zealand we knew we wanted to visit Hobbiton! While RVing around New Zealand we stopped close to the town of Cambridge, New Zealand where the Hobbiton movie set is located.
The entire area around Hobbiton makes you feel like you're in the movies! Hobbiton is surround by green rolling hills dotted with sheep. We were lucky enough to camp only a few minutes away from the movie set. It literally felt like we were camping in the Hobbiton movie set! After staying the night only a couple minutes down the road, we woke up early to take one of the first tours around the Hobbiton movie set. We usually don't pay for tours like this… However, the tour around the Hobbiton movie set was totally worth it!! If you're on the North Island of New Zealand you should definitely take the time to take a tour around Hobbiton!

We were always wondering, is the HOBBITON MOVIE SET WORTH A VISIT? As you may already know, the Hobbiton Movie Set is a 2 hour ride from AUCKLAND, New Zealand and it can make for a GREAT DAY TRIP, but should you visit?
Steve is HUGE TOLKIEN fan, having read the books and watched the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, so this was a huge bucket list item for him when we visited Auckland, New Zealand. I had not seen the movies in a while, so he wanted to see if I would appreciate it as much as he did.

Hobbiton New Zealand Movie Set Tour + Banquet Dinner
New Zealand is famously known as home of Middle-earth and the Hobbiton movie set tour and banquet dinner is definitely the best experience you can do in New Zealand if you're a hobbit or Lord of the Rings fan. Imagine being immersed in the set of where they shot Lord of the Rings, learning stories behind the films and having a full on Hobbit's dining experience at the Green Dragon Inn at the end of the night.
That's exactly what we did on this episode.
We wanted to take you along on the full Hobbit experience. Starting in Matamata we take you to the famous i-SITE visitor center which is specially designed just like a hobbit's borough.

We also grab a quick bite to eat at the local legendary pub which funnily enough also has a Lord of the Rings theme running inside.

After finishing snacking on Frodo's secret Pizza we head off to the main event.
The Hobbiton Movie Set

Can't even begin to describe how amazing this experience is. We were surrounded by the Shire's luscious green, enchanting valleys and dramatic sceneries. Being able to see the external set where Bilbo, Sam and Frodo lived is a fan's dream come true. We opted for the full experience which included a dusk walk around the hobbit boroughs as well as dinner fit for a Hobbit at the Green Dragon Inn.
It had actually been raining almost all day but we were blessed with sunshine just before we went on our tour! So lucky. We also met a bunch of lovely people during our super filling Hobbit feast - shout out to Keisha, Arron, James and Sven! :)

Hobbiton Movie Set Tour | The Hobbit | The Lord of the Rings | New Zealand
Welcome to The Shire, home of the Hobbiton Movie Set Where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies were filmed.
When locations scouts found the Alexander’s’ spectacular 1250 acre sheep and beef farm just outside of Matamata, it was clear this would be the perfect setting for Sir Peter Jackson’s adaptation of these classic works by J.R.R Tolkien.
The bucolic setting for The Shire, home of the Hobbits, including Bag End, was right there, and just waiting for his magical director’s touch.
Thirty-nine Hobbit Holes we’re created with untreated timber, ply and polystyrene. The oak tree that overlooks Bag End was cut down and transported in from near Matamata. Artificial leaves were brought in from Taiwan and individually wired onto the tree. The Mill and double arch bridge werw built out of scaffolding, ply and polystyrene. Thatch for the roofs of The Green Dragon Inn and The Mill were cut from rushes around the Alexander farm.

It’s Day 15 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where we are doing 365 days of 365 activities in New Zealand! Today’s activity is having dinner at Hobbiton as part of a night tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set!
We make our way to Matamata, a town in the Waikato region of New Zealand, where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit was filmed. We arrive in Hobbiton and the Hobbiton Night Tour begins! We have a look at the Hobbit Holes and learn all the behind-the-scenes secrets of The Lord of the Rings movies on this tour around Hobbiton village.
Once we arrive at the famous Green Dragon Tavern in Hobbiton it is time to feast like a Hobbit! We have dinner at Hobbiton by sitting down to a grand banquet. However, Robin ends up over-doing it, so when we do the night segment of our Hobbiton Night tour, Robin is burping and farting his way around Hobbiton... Nevertheless, we get to see the magic of Hobbiton by night, which is pretty darn special.

Hobbiton New Zealand Movie Set Tour // Day 13 Honeymoon
Day 13 of Honeymoon and we made a super last minute decision to take the drive up north in our Wilderness campervan to visit Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata New Zealand. It was absolutely one of the best random road trips we could have taken. Learning how they built and up kept this piece of land for the movies Lord of the rings and the Hobbit, to now a tourist location is amazing. Definitely a must see.

INTERNATIONAL HOBBIT DAY IN HOBBITON /// HOBBITON MOVIE SET /// VLOG #19
International Hobbit Day is a very special moment in the calendar of every Tolkien fan. This day is celebrated around the world but the main party takes place in Hobbiton Movie Set.
This place located near Matamata in New Zealand is a very special point on the map of every person who ever read a book or seen a movie form the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit series. But on the International Hobbit Day, it attracts even more people. Because they do a special tour in the dusk with all the hobbit holes lighted in a very magical way. After that, the celebration starts at the Green Dragon where people dressed like hobbits and elves can enjoy music and food from the middle earth.
This is definitely one of the top things to do in New Zealand and if you're travelling to this country in September it's an absolute must-visit event. But make sure to book your tickets in advance, they only sell about 400 for this very unique tour.

Riley and I went on a two-week backpacking trip to New Zealand during the Christmas holidays!
Here's our video of our third day in NZ where we went on a daytrip to the Middle Earth to experience the magical Hobbiton Movie Set and get a glimpse of the location used for The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit.
The Hobbiton Movie Set is a tour that kicks off from The Shire's Rest and lasts for about 2 hours.

HOBBITON TOUR & HOBBIT FEAST // The Shire, Middle Earth (New Zealand)
The most magical place in all of New Zealand and Middle Earth is on the North Island and is known as Hobbiton! Yes, the Shire is indeed a real place and we got to visit it and enjoy a hobbit feast on the famous set of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings franchises! It was an incredible day and one we recommend anybody do!! As a side note, many of the people working there are on working holiday visas. YOU CAN WORK AT THE SHIRE AND LIVE IN NEW ZEALAND FOR ONE YEAR ON THIS VISA IF YOU WANT!! WHY AREN'T YOU DOING THIS??
