Giethoorn The Netherlands 8K ????????
A Scenic Walk Tour In A Fairytale Village Of Giethoorn ! They Also Call It The Venice Of The Netherlands!
- WATCH ON 4K or 8K TV FOR BEST PICTURE QUALITY -
Giethoorn, located in National Park Weerribben-Wieden, is an idyllic village in Overijssel where countless thatched farms have been built on small peat islands connected by over 170 small wooden bridges.
What is there to do in Giethoorn?
In Giethoorn, a typically Dutch village in Overijssel, you can perfectly see how the Dutch love to live with and on the water. In an environment full of lakes, reed beds and forests lies this picturesque village with its many handsome farms with thatched roofs and characteristic wooden bridges.
Giethoorn was established as a settlement of peat harvesters. Peat cutting created ponds and lakes, and people built houses on the islands between them. As a result, access was only possible by bridge or using traditional Giethoorn boats, so-called punters – narrow boats pushed along using a long pole by a punteraar.
Fortunately, little has changed in Giethoorn. The tall wooden bridges are still there, and you can still travel the waters on a punter, as well as on an electric boat or a tour boat. A 1 or 2-hour boat tour takes you past the gorgeous 18th and 19th-century farmhouses and under the bridges.

Groningen is the capital city and main municipality of Groningen province in the Netherlands. It is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. As of December 2021, it had 235,287 inhabitants. It has a land area of 168.93 km2 (65.22 sq mi), and a total area, including water, of 180.21 km2 (69.58 sq mi). Its population density is 1,367 residents per km2 (3,540 per square mile). On 1 January 2019, it was merged with the municipalities of Ten Boer and Haren. The Groningen-Assen metropolitan area has about half a million inhabitants. Groningen is a university city, and students comprise an estimated 25% of its total population. Groningen was established more than 950 years ago. Historically, it was a semi-independent city-state, a member of the Hanseatic League, and the dominant regional power in the north of the Netherlands.
The city was founded at the northernmost point of the Hondsrug area. While the oldest document referring to Groningen's existence dates from 1040, the city was occupied by Anglo-Saxons centuries prior. The oldest archaeological evidence of a settlement in the region stem from around 3950–3650 BC, and the first major settlement in Groningen trace back to the year 3 AD.
Groningen railway station, locally called Hoofdstation (Main Station), is the main railway station in Groningen in the Province of Groningen, Netherlands. It is located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Zuidhorn and Groningen Europapark, on the Meppel–Groningen railway as terminus after Groningen Europapark, and on the Groningen–Delfzijl railway as terminus after Groningen Noord.
Martini Tower - Groningen in the 16th century
In the 13th century, Groningen was an important trade centre and its inhabitants built a city wall to underline its authority. The city had a strong influence on its surrounding lands and the Gronings dialect became a common tongue. The most influential period of the city was at the end of the 15th century when the nearby province of Friesland was administered from Groningen. During these years the Martinitoren was built which is considered to be the city's most significant landmark.
In 1536, Groningen accepted Emperor Charles V, the King of Spain and the Habsburg ruler of the other Netherlands as its ruler, thus ending the region's autonomy. The city was captured in the Siege of Groningen (1594) by the Dutch and English forces led by Maurice of Nassau. After the siege, the city and the province joined the Dutch Republic.
The University of Groningen was founded in 1614 with initial course offerings in law, medicine, theology and philosophy. During the same period the city expanded rapidly and a new city wall was built. The Siege of Groningen (1672) led by the bishop of Münster, Bernhard von Galen during the Third Anglo-Dutch War failed and the city walls resisted; an event that is celebrated annually with music and fireworks on 28 August as Gronings Ontzet or Bommen Berend.
During World War II, the main square and the Grote Markt were largely destroyed in the Battle of Groningen in April 1945. However, the church Martinitoren, the Goudkantoor, and the city hall were undamaged.

WIERUM - a small village on the WaddenSea - The Netherlands
Wierum a typical terp village
Wierum is a mound village that originated on a salt marsh near the sea in the early Middle Ages. This dangerous location has not been without consequences. The northeastern part of the rectangular mound has disappeared into the sea and part of the village has fallen prey to the waves. Like many mound villages, Wierum also arose after people had defended themselves against the repeated floods by erecting an earthen elevation or mound, on which houses and later the church were built. This is still clearly visible in Wierum, the church is clearly situated on such a high piece of land. It once stood in the center of the village, but after a few major floods in the Middle Ages and also in later centuries, whole parts of the village were dragged into the sea.
The church now almost seems to nestle against the dike, as if the 12th century turf stone tower is looking for support in its great age.

FIEMEL- ATLANTIC WALL BUNKERS, from the 2nd World War - Groningen -The Netherlands
Fiemel is a hamlet in the Dutch municipality of Delfzijl. It is located east of Termunten, directly on the Dollard on the south side of the Punt van Reide, in The Netherlands.
In the Second World War the German occupiers built a number of bunkers near Fiemel. These were part of the Atlantic Wall and also served to defend the city of Emden, which lies opposite Fiemel on the Eems estuary. During the liberation of this part of the province of Groningen, heavy resistance was offered from those bunkers. The neighboring Nieuwolda was severely damaged. A number of the bunkers have been preserved.

On my last trip to Europe I got to see a swing bridge in action! It was very interesting to see. This is like a draw bridge, but it rotates 90 degrees instead so cars and bikes can cross the canal.

Bourtange, Vlagtwedde, Groningen Province, Netherlands, Europe
Bourtange is a village with a population of 430 in the municipality of Vlagtwedde in the Netherlands. It is situated in the region Westerwolde in the east of the province of Groningen near the German border. Fort Bourtange was built in 1593 during the Dutch Revolt and was used until 1851. The star fort was restored to its mid-18th-century state in 1960 and it is currently an open-air museum. The name Bourtange comes from the Dutch word tange (sand ridge), because the settlement is situated on a strategically important sand ridge in the marshes of the Bourtange Moor. Fort Bourtange was initially built during the Eighty Years' War (circa 1568–1648) when William I of Orange wanted to control the only road between Germany and the city of Groningen which was controlled by the Spanish. This road followed a sandy ridge (tange) through the marshes (the Bourtange Swamp). Later, around 1594, Bourtange became part of the fortifications on the border between the northern provinces (Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe) and Germany. Bourtange was a separate municipality until 1822, when it was merged with Vlagtwedde. In 1851 the star fort was given up and Bourtange became a normal village. Around 1960 living conditions in the village deteriorated and it was decided that Bourtange would be rebuilt to its state of 1740-1750. Today it is an open-air museum. Bourtange is located in the north of the municipality of Vlagtwedde and in the east of the province of Groningen near the German border. It is situated on a sand ridge in the Bourtange Moor, in the region of Westerwolde. In 2001, the town of Bourtange had 267 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.21 km², and contained 133 residences. In 2005, the statistical area Bourtange, which also can include the surrounding countryside, had a population of around 530. As of 2012, Bourtange has a population of 430 and a population density of 270/km2 (700/sq mi).
