Falcon State Park in Zapata, TX and Margaritas!

Season 1 / E 5   Zapata, TX

We had a grand old time in Zapata, TX. The local people were so comforting to us and made us feel like we were at home. Our Travel Trailer broke down on us and we had to stay at the local Holiday Inn for a week. No-one is exempt from mayhem.
Falcon State Park was a refreshing getaway and we enjoyed watching the sunset on Falcon Lake. Zapata is a small boarder town with a wonderful spirit. If you crave more excitement, Laredo, TX is only a 40 min drive away. Come along on our journey and do not forget to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to see our latest video.

Zapata Ranch
5305 CO-150
Mosca, CO 81146

Welcome back to the Nash Potatoes Outdoor Show! Today, I’m 30 minutes northeast of Alamosa, Colorado at Zapata Ranch.

Zapata Ranch is an authentic working cattle and bison guest ranch owned by The Nature Conservancy. It covers more than 100,000 acres and borders the Great Sand Dunes National Park. With nearly 2,000 head of free-roaming bison, the ranch specializes in multiple night stays where visitors become immersed in the Colorado ranching experience.

You should know that the ranch is only open March through October.

If you want to visit Zapata Ranch, there are 3 ways to do so:
1. You can simply come and enjoy the walking trail, which is what I did today.
2. You can book a guided bison tour. It’s available Thursday through Sunday. They depart from the Zapata Ranch Lodge at 10am. Advanced reservations are required. Cost is $50 per person and each two hour tour is limited to seven participants.
3. You can book an overnight stay or an all-inclusive ranch vacation package.

Zapata Ranch and Conservancy Preserve

Zapata Ranch is an authentic working cattle and bison guest ranch owned by The Nature Conservancy, covering more than 100,000 acres and bordering the Great Sand Dunes National Park. With nearly 2,000 head of free-roaming bison, the ranch specializes in multiple night stays where visitors become immersed in the Colorado ranching experience.

Zapata Ranch offers extensive programs based around horseback riding and nature programs, and also the opportunity to experience life on a working cattle and bison ranch while enjoying high-end amenities and gourmet food. Guests who desire a working ranch experience are welcome alongside our wranglers and ranch staff on various ranch projects. For those seeking to just experience the ranch and its surroundings, horseback rides through the herd of 2,000 wild bison or the neighboring Great Sand Dunes National Park are favorites.

Located on the eastern edge of the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado, the ranch borders the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, the newest national park in the United States.

Home to a conservation herd of bison that run in a single 50,000 acre pasture, the ranch also runs a herd of Angus mother cows.

► I grew up in Kalamazoo, MI and graduated with a Marketing degree from Oakland University.
► I moved to Longmont, CO in November 2016 and fell in love with all the beautiful hiking trails that Colorado has to offer. So, in April 2012, the Nash Potatoes Outdoor Show was born.
► In November 2019, I took a 4-month camping trip in my pop-up camper. This gave me an opportunity to travel, explore, unwind, and create lots of great videos.
► In December 2020, I began recording a series of downhill skiing videos in Colorado. These quickly became popular and my passion for YouTube was re-ignited!
► I actually had so many great memories of my first camping trip that I decided to do another one. So, in April 2021, I converted a 12-foot enclosed trailer into a camper and documented the whole process.
► In June 2021, I reached 1,000 subscribers and was able to monetize my channel.

Zapata falls, Alamosa Colorado

Zapata Falls is a waterfall located in the San Luis Valley near the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and south of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Alamosa County, Colorado. The waterfall has a drop of about 30 feet . Access to this waterfall entails a mildly steep 0.5-mile hike. Viewing the falls requires fording the stream and climbing rocks.

The road up!
-----------------------------------------

Katie M.'s Review on The Dyrt:

▶︎ Rough road, great views
This was my most primitive campsite up to the point of staying here! I was surprised to find there was a camp host, but Tim was great. The vault toilets were the cleanest and freshest I’ve ever experienced.
I was in campsite 24, which is technically a site for campers/RVs, but luckily there was a clearing for a tent just below the car pull in and there was also a path already worn from that tent clearing to the bathroom, so it almost felt like I had a private entrance. lol
The sites are first come, first serve, but I def saw people camping along the route up when I drove back up late at night one night. Also, most people are pretty much “one and done” with this campsite, so if you’re determined to stay here, but don’t find something on your first try, just come back in the morning.
Great views of the valley below on a clear day!
The road up is 3.5 miles from the highway and it is ROUGH. It is manageable with a 2wd drive car (I have a Camry), but my hands were sweating the whole way. This road stays fairly busy with visitors to see the falls. There is also a trail to Zapata Lake, which few seem to take advantage of.

Come with us as we visit Zapata Falls in Alamosa County, Colorado. Zapata Falls is located just south of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.

Unfortunately, in order to get to Zapata Falls, we had to travel approximately 3 miles on one of the worst heavily trafficked roads in the entire USA - very rocky! We averaged about 5 miles per hour in our full size truck.

The trail was about 1 mile, but the last quarter mile was through the water - ankle deep.

Day Trip to McKinney 🎭 (FULL EPISODE) S11 E12

Though it sits outside the ever-sprawling Metropolis of Dallas, McKinney has found a way to keep its small town charm. With a bustling town square, hundreds of years of preserved history and alot of good eatin', it's a great place to slow down for a day.

Sitting on the square, the Groovy Coop is a novelty and totally groovy antique shop! Find everything from funky artwork to retro video games and records!

The old 1874 Collin County Courthouse in the middle of the square has been turned into the McKinney Performing Arts Center. The courts have been swapped out for a stage, and some folks even think it might be haunted!

The Collin County History Museum in the old post office is the perfect place to start a historic tour. There’s even an augmented reality app you can download for the exhibits to see how the city has changed over the years. It’s pretty cool!

Chestnut Square Historic Village is 2 city blocks full of homes and stores dating back to the beginning of McKinney in the 1850s! It’s awesome to see how well preserved this history is. And it even comes alive with demonstrations on certain days, like a fully working replica of a blacksmith shop!

Calling all shoppers and barbecue junkies — stop in at this market for the B.O.B. (brisket on a biscuit with jalapeno blackberry jelly, that is) and stay for the shelves of fresh baked cookies, sweet smelling soaps and handmade candles.

This is the “people’s backyard.” A place where the locals come to hang, eat, drink and play. Serving up delicious “Tex-Ranch” style cuisine out of a historic home, every night is a block party!

Locally popped and flavored in over 50 “popcoctions,” this is every popcorn-lovers dream. Try the wild combos like jalapeno caramel popcorn or go crazy with a little mac-n-cheese-flavored popcorn. Sweet-tooths are also in for a treat, because it’s also an awesome candy shop.

This old grocery store warehouse-turned upscale-restaurant is probably not what you picture a Texas BBQ joint to look like. But Local Yocal Bar & Grill is taking fire and meat to another level. Sure, they serve up the traditional ‘que, but they’ve also got a dry-aged 20-oz Wagyu Bone-In Ribeye that’s to die for.

Outside is 289 acres of wetlands, prairies and forests. Inside is tons of exhibits on our local environment and (most importantly) LEMURS. It’s a wild time.

Another element of the Heard Nature Center is this ropes course full of team-building (and heart-pounding) challenges. Bring the family for a little bonding and friendly competition.
