TLAXCALA Mexico. The great state.
This is just the tip of the iceberg in a series of videos that I'll bring right to you. Tlaxcala is the smallest state in Mexico. However, its greatness goes way beyond its size. Stayed tunes for the upcoming videos, where I'll be taking you to Tlaxco, magic town and its naturally formed labyrinth, Nanacamilpa and its beautiful forest to experiment the dance of the fireflies. The archaeological area of Tecoaque with its unusual cilindric piramid. Apizaco, the great urban town and its great cathedral. Calpulalpan and its surroundings. and of course Tlaxcala capital. its most iconic places and monuments.

Tlaxcala, Mexico - Unravel Travel TV
There are over a thousand archeological sites in the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico but only seven are fully excavated and open to the public. The two most important are Xochitécatl and Cacaxtla. It is believed that Xochitécatl, located on the peak of an extinct volcano, had its apogee between the years 600-800 AD, making it one of the oldest settlements in the valley. It was a strategic point as it dominated the valley from on high, and this is probably why it became the regional capital. The remains comprise four monuments, including the Pyramid of the Flower, which has the largest base of all the pre-Hispanic constructions; and the Spiral Construction, which is a circular pyramid. In 1975 some local farmers from San Miguel del Milagro came across the face of a pre-Hispanic figure on a mural that they uncovered as they were working the soil. Once they had informed the authorities it didn't take long for archeologists to flock to the spot, though it wasn't fully excavated until 1980. The site is in fact a superb example of the construction system used by the ancients, who built a new building over an old one, as if they were onion layers. What we see now are the superimposed ruins, decorated with murals.
The mainly Catholic and colonial architecture of Tlaxcala does honor to the important role it played in New Spain, as can be seen by the extraordinary collection of Baroque and Churrigueresque buildings dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. In the city center the Plaza de la Constitución is the central square, with an arcade of 28 arches along one side. North of the plaza stand the Palacio de Gobierno and the Palacio Municipal, decorated with murals by the Tlaxcala-born Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin, which narrate the history of the state from the pre-Hispanic period up to the present day. To one side of these is the San José parish church, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, and the majestic Palace of Justice, formerly the Royal Chapel, which is said to have been the first chapel built in the Americas. More impressive still is the former monastery of San Francisco de Nuestra Señora de la Ascunción, erected between 1537 and 1540, which gives no hint of its architectural magnificence with its austere façade. It is not until you step inside that you discover the splendid wooden coffered ceiling, which reveals a Mudejar influence. To the southeast of the Plaza de la Constitución, right beside the oldest bullring in the country, stands the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Tlaxcala, which was previously a Franciscan monastery, built between 1537 and 1540. The façade has a Renaissance sobriety about it, while inside there is a Mudejar ceiling and a chapel with altarpieces and paintings. At one corner of the atrium, there is an open chapel in a Neo-Gothic style.
The people of this region are joyful by nature and don't miss any opportunity for a wild party. This may be the reason the Tlaxcalatecos -- as they are called -- feel so much love and pride for their fiestas and traditions. The fiestas mostly involve processions through streets decorated with garlands and cut paper, food and craft stalls, Catholic ceremonies and songs at dawn, always accompanied by the tolling of bells, drinking and music from the teponaxtle, the chirimía and the wind instruments that play in the church squares. The churches are dressed up with great arches of flowers and seeds, both inside and on their façades, as well as with carpets made from colored sawdust that are placed in the atriums. The most well-known of these festivities are those held in Huamantla on August 14 and 15, during the night when no-one sleeps. These carpets, which are a perfect example of ephemeral art, can measure up to four miles in length and are laid out in the streets to make way for the Virgin of Charity, who is carried on bearers' shoulders from house to house during the night. On the Saturday following the night when no-one sleeps the main streets of Huamantla are closed from midday and bullfighting bulls are let loose to chase anyone who dares to get in their way. This is known as the Huamantlada. One of the most interesting traditions is that of the danzantes del carnaval (Carnival dancers). Dressed in local attire and masks, the dancers move from village to village displaying their dances. Though the dances have a significant religious component, they are mainly satirical, and were created by the indigenous people in imitation of what they observed in the Spanish dances. The intention is usually to mock the customs of the upper classes.

map of Tlaxcala [ Mexico ]
Tlaxcala (/tlɑːsˈkɑːlə/; Spanish: [tla(k)sˈkala] (audio speaker iconlisten), [tla(ɣ)sˈkala]; from Nahuatl languages: Tlaxcallān Nahuatl pronunciation: [tɬaʃˈkalːaːn] (audio speaker iconlisten)), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Tlaxcala (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Tlaxcala), is one of the 32 states which comprise the Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided into 60 municipalities and its capital city is Tlaxcala.
It is located in East-Central Mexico, in the altiplano region, with the eastern portion dominated by the Sierra Madre Oriental.[8] It is bordered by the states of Puebla to the north, east and south, México to the west and Hidalgo to the northwest. It is the smallest state of the republic, accounting for only 0.2% of the country's territory.[8]
The state is named after its capital, Tlaxcala, which was also the name of the Pre-Columbian city and culture. The Tlaxcalans allied themselves with the Spanish to defeat the Aztecs, with concessions from the Spanish that allowed the territory to remain mostly intact throughout 300 years of colonial period.[9] After Mexican Independence, Tlaxcala was declared a federal territory, until 1857 when it was admitted as a state of the federation.
Most of the state's economy is based on agriculture, light industry and tourism. The tourist industry is rooted in Tlaxcala's long history with major attractions being archeological sites such as Cacaxtla and colonial constructions in and around Tlaxcala city mapa de Tlaxcala Mexico The state of Tlaxcala is located slightly east of center of Mexico between 97°37′07″ and 98°42′51″W and 19°05′43″ and 19°44′07″N. It is bordered by the states of Hidalgo, Puebla and Mexico State. It is the smallest state in terms of territory with only about 4,061 km2 (1,568 sq mi), representing about 0.2% of the entire country.[8] The state is divided into 60 municipalities, the largest of which are Tlaxcala, Apizaco, Huamantla, Zacatelco, Calpulalpan, Chiautempan and Tlaxco.[8] The political heart of the state is its capital, Tlaxcala, even though it is not the state's largest city. Tlaxcala lies at the foot of the northwestern slope of La Malinche volcano in the Sierra Madre Oriental. It is one of the oldest cities in Mexico, founded as an organized civilization before the 15th century. The Spanish political entity was founded by Hernán Cortés between 1520 and 1525 and given the Spanish name of New City of Our Lady of the Assumption. Its economy is still based on the traditional enterprises of agriculture, textiles, and the commerce of products of native peoples such as the Otomí, especially on market days. Other important cities include Santa Ana Chiautempan, the most populous city in the state, Apizaco, noted for its textile production and Huamantla, a farming and cattle town.
Natural geography and climate
View of the La Malinche volcano
Tlaxcala is a land-locked state situated on the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The average altitude for the state is 2,230 meters above sea level, making it a bit higher than the Valley of Mexico just to the southwest.] The western part of the state lies on the central plateau of Mexico while the east is dominated by the Sierra Madre Oriental, home of the 4,461 meter La Malinche volcano. Most of the state is rugged terrain dominated by ridges and deep valleys, along with protruding igneous rock formations.] This ruggedness, along with large-scale weather phenomena such as the Intertropical Convergence Zone, gives the state a complex climate. Overall rain patterns for the state are about 400mm in the summer rainy season and 30mm in the winter. Locally, however, this varies dramatically between the drier plateaus and valleys and the wetter mountains. Variations in altitude produce sub-climates between semi-tropical to temperate, with frosts likely in the higher elevations during the winter. Temperate forests of pine, fir (Abies religiosa), evergreen oak (Quercus ilex) and junipers (Junierus communis) dominate the mountain highlands while the flatlands, with their drier climate, are characterized by agaves and prickly pear cactus (Opuntia).
The state has no major lakes or large rivers. The principal water sources are the Atoyac-Zahuapan basin and the reservoir of the Atlangatepec dam.

🇲🇽In this video we're heading to Cholula, YES it's the BIGGEST pyramid in the world (in terms of overall size, not height), located close to Puebla in Central Mexico, which itself is just 2 hours on the bus from Mexico City.
If you're looking for places to visit in Mexico or even as a (slightly long) day trip from CDMX, Cholula provides a great opportunity to not only visit this awesome sight but also learn more about Mexican history, Puebla itself, Popcatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes and more.
On the top of the pyramid (which isn't fully excavated, it looks like a large hill) is a church built by the Spanish in the 1600s. Inside you can marvel at the beautiful interior, chandelier and listen to traditional Mexican music, as well as have an amazing view!
You can also visit the museum and archaeological zone....it's a must do while you're in Mexico!
