A trip around Youghal

A trip around Youghal on Monday 8th June, 2020 - the day most businesses reopened for the first time in three months as the second phase of the Government's plan to get the economy moving again after the Covid 19 lockdown got under way. And it was busy! Traffic was very heavy on the main street. I started and finished at Summerfield Cross.

Tynte's Castle - County Cork Ireland

Tynte's Castle, located on Main Street in Youghal, County Cork, is a four storey tower house standing about 50 ft high. It was built by the Walshes, a wealthy merchant family, in the late 15th century to protect their home and goods.

The Walshes were dispossessed in 1584 after the Desmond Rebellion and the castle was taken over by the crown and leased to Sir Robert Tynte. The castle was used as a secure store and residential accommodation by Tynte, who worked as an administrator for the Office of the Sheriff of Cork.

Oliver Cromwell's army entered Youghal in 1649 and stayed over the winter. It is not clear what role the castle played during Cromwell's stay, but presumably it was occupied by supporters of the Parliamentarians. There was a failed attempt to burn down the castle in 1689 while it was being used as a prison for Cromwell supporters during the reign of James II.

The castle remained in the Tynte family until it was sold in 1866 to William Raymond Fitzmaurice. The castle was acquired by the McCarthy family in the 1950's, who repaired the parapet wall, replaced the parapet walkway, and repaired the shutters and windows over the last fifty years.

Youghal's beautiful beaches in County Cork - Ireland

Youghal's beautiful beaches in County Cork - Ireland. Youghal adjoins a number of beaches including the 5 km beach to the west of the town. Youghal's three beaches: Front Strand, Claycastle and Redbarn are the envy of the south.
Redbarn Beach was officially designated with ‘Blue Flag’ status for 2019. The Blue Flag, operated in Ireland by An Taisce, is one of the world’s most recognised eco-labels.

Youghal’s other beautiful beaches are Claycastle Beach with the wonderful boardwalk and the Front Strand adjacent to the Promenade. The Mall Dock is a lovely small beach in the centre of town. This is great news for the town at the start of the tourist season combined with the recently installed Pontoon by the quayside.

Youghal is proudly hosting the @Ironman Cork this June 2019. The town is busy gearing up for this massive event which will attract at least 10,000 people to Youghal and East Cork.
