I Walked Through Trees That Leo Tolstoy Planted: Yasnaya Polyana in Autumn

For Moscuvites, the fall is all about walks through the changing birch trees. This simply action was appreciated by none more than Leo Tolstoy: one of the greatest authors not just of Russia but of any country on earth. His novels inspired the likes of pacifist and anarchist revolutionaries, stirred the culture ideas of religion, war and aristocracy decades before their fruit were even seen.

I got the chance in the same fall leaves that Tolstoy valued so highly to walk where he walked and see what he saw at his home and estate: Yasnaya Polyana, where it is almost as if he was simply out at the time for a walk. His clothes still laid out on his couch, and his workers still hard at work in the fields nearby.

Traveling to Russia? Watch this video to discover Russia's highlights!

Are you traveling to Russia for your next holiday? Are you still undecided on which countries to choose for your trip to Eurasia? If it is going to be your first time in Russia, do not miss these highlights!

Spanning 11 time zones and across Asia, Europe and almost reaching North America, Russia is the world’s largest country. With great size comes great diversity – be it Russia’s geographical vastness or the culture of its numerous ethnic groups. From top-notch cities to off-the-beaten-track destinations, a trip to Russia is nothing short of an adventure.

Moscow: Russia’s capital Moscow is a sophisticated city on the Moskva River. Known for its historical and architectural legacy, Moscow is dotted with a labyrinth of churches, cathedrals, fortresses and museums.

St Petersburg: Russia’s second-largest city and cultural capital, St Petersburg is a port city on the Baltic Sea and was once the imperial capital of Russia.

Golden Ring:
From the country capital Moscow you can easily explore the Golden Ring and Volga Region. Located northeast of Moscow, the Golden Ring region is known for its collection of medieval towns like Sergiev Posad, Suzdal and Rostov. In these towns you will come across numerous whitewashed golden-domed churches and medieval monasteries along with historic architecture, religious art and traditional handicrafts and food. Away from the urban areas, renting a bicycle is the best way to explore the countryside. After the day’s exploration, don’t forget to take a hot bath, which is known as banya, to unwind and add a perfect ending to your day.

Western European Russia:
Russia’s Western European region is located, well, in the west of the country and can be reached from both Moscow and St Petersburg. Birthplace of many great minds like Tolstoy and Turgenev, this is an ancient region in the country that is dotted with cultural and archaeological treasures. The region’s major destinations include Veliky Novgorod, Smolensk and Yasnaya Polyana. Veliky Novgorod, nicknamed as the “Birthplace of Russia”, is a beautiful city and home to the oldest church in Russia - Cathedral of St Sophia. Smolensk is popular for churches like the hilltop Assumption Cathedral, picturesque parks like the well-manicured Lopatinsky Garden and the 16th-century Smolensk Kremlin. Yasnaya Polyana is famous as the birthplace of Leo Tolstoy and you can visit the writer’s home, which is now a museum.

Northern European Russia:
This is where you should come to enjoy the natural phenomena of northern lights and the midnight Sun. When you are here the islands of Kizhi and Solovetsky and the Kola Peninsula are the best places to explore and experience the region. Kizhi Island is located in Lake Onega and can be visited on a ferry from the nearby city of Petrozavodsk, which will give you 4 hours to explore the island before returning back to the city. The Solovetsky Islands group is a UNESCO world heritage site and located in the Onega Bay of the White Sea. Most people come here to visit its namesake monastery and learn the history of its former USSR prison camps. Located almost completely inside the Arctic Circle, Kola peninsula offers excellent wilderness and a chance to see the northern lights.

Kaliningrad: Away from the mainland, Kaliningrad is tucked in between Poland and Lithuania along the coast of the Baltic Sea. The region is known for its German and USSR heritage, European culture and beaches.

Must visit places and experiences in Russia's Caucasus, Volga, Urals, Siberia & Far East Regions!

Russian TOP places to visit – LAVRA

What to see in Russia? Here is one of the most sacred places for all Russian believers – The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius.
More information: The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius (Russian: Тро́ице-Се́ргиева Ла́вра) is the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 km to the north-east from Moscow by the road leading to Yaroslavl, and currently is home to over 300 monks. The monastery was founded in 1337 by one of the most venerated Russian saints, Sergius of Radonezh, who built a wooden church in honour of the Holy Trinity on Makovets Hill. Early development of the monastic community is well documented in contemporary lives of Sergius and his disciples.

The Museum Estate of Lev Tolstoy in Moscow

The building accommodating Leo Tolstoy’s Museum in Khamovniki once belonged to Tolstoy. Nothing seems to have changed since the time of its celebrated former owner.
Tolstoy bought a house in Khamovniki in 1882. Back then, it was located on the outskirts of Moscow.
Tolstoy spent 19 winters in Khamovniki, leaving for Yasnaya Polyana in summertime.
Many items on display once belonged to Tolstoy himself.

Two museums full of charm to discover since they were, at one time in their life, the homes of the illustrious characters to whom they are dedicated. The Tolstoy Museum is in the former home of the writer Leo Tolstoy, where he lived for 10 years at the end of the 19th century, and the Gorky Museum is in the former home of the writer Maxim Gorky, where he lived in 1931 to 1936. Then we end this literary walk in the district where scenes from Mikhail Bulgakov's novel, entitled The Master and Margarita took place.

Mars in Tula. Lev Tolstoy. Cars of USSR. Cave church. Tulas region.

I’ve always dreamed to visit this region and city of Tula. But main idea was to eat gingerbread and drink some tea from samovar. Because of Covid-19 main museums of city were closed and I decided to explore Tulas region. And I was honestly pretty shocked because of how many interesting and amazing places Tula region has to offer: Yasnaya Polyana, Konduki, open air museum, church caves.
Hope you’ll enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed filming it!

Palace Yasnaya Polyana

2 kilometers from Yalta, in Gaspra village, there is a palace called Romantic Alexandria. This Gothic style building was constructed in 1836 and was designed by F. Elson. The palace looks like a gloomy yet impressive building with two towers on the northern façade. It is referred to as a castle for its image. However, the southern side looks different: a subtle veranda attached to the palace gives it an Eastern look. Romantic Alexandria is surrounded with a beautiful park, where Gaspra locals and guests love to take strolls.

The first owner of the palace, Earl A. Golitsyn, lived there for just two years. A friend of the Earl, Ann Golitsyna, managed the construction. She was the one who decided that the palace should be built in Gothic style. She entrusted the creation of the park to a gardener from Vorontsov Palace, and then Ludwig Cremer was invited to work at the palace. The park was filled with oak, maple, beech, sycamore, chestnut, and cypress trees. In the centre of the park there was an artificial lake with a waterfall. Gradually the palace became an attraction. In 1837 it was visited by Emperor Nicholas I, accompanied by Zhukovsky.

After Golitsyn died from a stroke, the mansion was inherited by his sister Kalogrivova. In 1865 she sold the palace to Vladimir Levashov. Following his divorce, Romantic Alexandria was property of his ex-wife Sofia Panina, a woman with progressive liberal views. She let her steward Carl Clasen manage the beautification of the palace and its surrounding territories. The palace was restored, new premises were added, and the park with the garden were improved under his supervision.

In 1901-1902 the palace was occupied by writer Lev Tolstoy. There he held meetings with other famous people, including M. Gorky and A. Chekhov. Nowadays there is a museum of the writer’s creative work in the rooms that were occupied by him. For a year in 1917 the palace accommodated future writer V. Nabokov and his family. Young Nabokov loved catching butterflies in the palace park.

Currently Romantic Alexandria is used as one of the housings of Yasnaya Polyana sanatorium. The sanatorium was given this name after L. Tolstoy and his mansion that used to have the same name.

Address of Romantic Alexandria Palace: the Crimea, Gaspra village, Sevastopolskoe highway, 52.

The museums of the city Tula, Russia. Музеи Тулы.

Visited the Museum and the samovar Museum in Tula. In the Museum of weapons and Museum-estate of Tolstoy, Yasnaya Polyana could not visited. But this is not a problem - there will be occasion to return to Tula.
