The Only Floating Lake of India - Loktak Lake in Manipur | Northeast India
For any visitor, the principal attraction of the state is the Loktak Lake in Bishnupur District which is 48kms from Imphal City and it is the largest fresh water lake in the North–East India. It is a beautiful stretch of water resembling a miniature inland sea. A day spent at Loktak Lake is a lifetime of memory. Visitors can catch a bird’s eye view of the lake from Sendra. Fishermen living in floating islands called Phumdis in floating huts known as Phumsangs are unique sights of this lake. The Sendra Tourist Home with an attached Cafeteria is a sought after tourist spot. Boating and other water sports are organised here at Takmu Water Sports Complex.
This ancient lake plays an important role in the economy of Manipur. It serves as a source of water for hydropower generation, irrigation and drinking water supply. The lake is also a source of livelihood for the rural fishermen who live in the surrounding areas and on phumdis, also known as phumshangs. Human activity has led to severe pressure on the lake ecosystem. 55 rural and urban hamlets around the lake have a population of about 100,000 people.
The best time to visit Loktak lake is during the winter season i.e., between November and February as one gets the opportunity to spot the deer at that time as the other seasons of the year they are found living in the surrounding hills. There is no entry fee to the Loktak Lake. However, boating charges are lieved.
Things to do at Loktak Lake
The lake and the surrounding areas are perfect for exploring by foot, on a bike, or by boat. There’s also plenty of shared taxis puttering around on all the roads. Some ways to pass the time include:
Visit the small island of Karang. A local “passenger” boat is 10 Rs per person, and there are several vantage points from where you can get a good look at the lake and the phumdis (small floating islands of vegetation and organic matter).
Rent a boat and go for a swim, or just enjoy a boat ride. The water temperature is pretty perfect thanks to the shallow lake depth, and a boat ride is the perfect way to appreciate how big the lake actually is.
Visit Keibul Lamjao National Park, the only floating national park in the world. To get there, head back to Moirang and ask for Keibul Lamjao. You’ll be pointed in the right direction for a shared taxi, which will drop you off near the entrance to the park. Entry is 200 Rs for foreigners (30 Rs for locals), with a 250 Rs camera charge (50 Rs for locals). The gatekeeper was lax, though, so if you put your camera in a bag you can probably avoid the camera fee. Ask Mr. Maipakchao for more information.
How to reach Loktak Lake:
If you aren’t on a tight budget, you can hire a private car all the way from Imphal to Loktak Lake and beyond to explore the places. However, if you are on a tight budget there is public convenience from Imphal to Loktak Lake via Moirang.

Manipur is a state in Northeast India, with the city of Imphal as its capital. It is bounded by Nagaland to the north, Mizoram to the south, and Assam to the west; Burma lies to its east. The state covers an area of 22,327 square kilometres and has a population of almost 3 million, including the Meitei, who are the majority group in the state, Loi, Yaithibi, Kuki and Naga peoples, who speak a variety of Sino-Tibetan languages. Manipur has been at the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange for more than 2,500 years. It has long connected the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia and China, enabling migration of people, cultures and religions. During the Raj, the Kingdom of Manipur was one of the princely states. Between 1917 and 1939, the people of Manipur pressed for their rights against British rule. By the late 1930s, the princely state of Manipur negotiated with the British administration its preference to be part of India, rather than Burma. These negotiations were cut short with the outbreak of World War II. On 11 August 1947, Maharaja Budhachandra signed the Instrument of Accession, joining India.
