Lamu County (Places You Should Visit)

Lamu County is located in the Northern Coast of Kenya and is one of the Six Coastal Counties in Kenya. It borders Tana River County in the southwest, Garissa County to the north, Republic of Somalia to the northeast and the Indian Ocean to the South. It lies 1° 40’ and 2° 30’ south and longitude 40° 15’ and 40° 38’ east. The county has a land surface of 6,273.1 km that include the mainland and over 65 islands that form the Lamu Archipelago. The total length of the coastline is 130 km while land water mass area stands at 308 km.[2]

The county has 2 constituencies namely Lamu West and Lamu East. These two also consist of the two districts referred to as the sub-counties in Lamu County. Lamu West has Amu Mkomani, Shela, Hindi, Mkunumbi, Hongwe, Bahari and Witu Divisions while Lamu East has Faza, Basuba and Kiunga divisions. There are 10 wards, 23 locations, and 38 sub-locations in the county.

The main economic activities in the county include crop production, livestock production, fisheries, tourism and mining, most notably quarrying. Among the challenges facing Lamu is population growth owing to migration into Lamu from other parts of the country, fuelled partly by the anticipated opportunities accruing from the Lamu Port South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor. Other challenges include landlessness and poor land management, insufficient social services such as healthcare and education, inadequate supply of piped and fresh water, under-developed infrastructure, and food insecurity.

There are extensive mangrove forests in the area.

Epic Travel Across all regions in Kenya

Lamu has always been my favourite destination in Kenyan. when in lamu, I must visit the Majlis restaurant. A privately owned beach hotel situated in the heart of Kenya on Manda Island Lamu.

Another awesome site is Shela Beach. Also known as Shella Beach and is on the island of Lamu in the north of Kenya. It is about two kilometres from Lamu town, the capital of Lamu. You can easily get to Shela Beach by walking along the water’s edge, or by using a boat hired from the locals as a water taxi.

From the terraces of the houses and from the beach you have a view opposite of the island of Manda whose beach, Manda Bay, runs parallel to Shela Beach and is only one kilometre away. On the water In between these beaches speedboats and Dhows, the traditional sailing boats of the fishermen in this region, can be seen at rest and in motion.

Lamu Trip

Our amazing trip to the amazing Lamu island, where we enjoyed the beautiful beaches, scenery and unique culture. we also attended the annual Maulid (The Prophet Muhammad's birthday celebrations).

Lamu or Lamu Town is a small town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. Situated 341 kilometres (212 mi) by road northeast of Mombasa that ends at Mokowe Jetty, from where the sea channel has to be crossed to reach Lamu Island. It is the headquarters of Lamu County and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lamu is a place like no other, a peaceful tropical island where life is lived at it’s own relaxed rhythm, but a place whose history is as mysterious and fascinating as the winding streets of it’s medieval stone town.

The island itself is a beautiful place of rolling dunes and endless beaches, where tiny villages nestle among coconut and mango plantations and lateen sailed dhows ply the waters. But Lamu’s real attraction is its Old town.

The town of Lamu began life as a 14th century Swahili settlement, but the island has seen many visitors and influences, including Portuguese explorers, Turkish traders and the Omani Arabs. All left their mark, but Lamu developed its own particular culture, which has ultimately endured.

Lamu’s narrow streets remain unchanged, and in the markets and squares around the fort life moves at the same pace as it always has. There are no vehicles on this island, and the donkey and the dhow remain the dominant form of transport.

Exotic Lamu - Malindi And President Ruto in Mpeketoni

Come with me as I experience 'work and play at my last job on the Kenyan coast.

Lamu island is a town that has deliberately remained unurbanized and it was great to see the preservation of the ancient architecture firsthand. It has donkeys as the primary mode of transport, Lamu island buildings resemble some parts of Europe and the Arab world.

What you need to know about Malindi is that the main attraction is the long beautiful white sandy beaches and warm, tropical waters. The hotels there offer a wide range of watersports from windsurfing to paddle boating and snorkeling.

Dhows are traditional boats, that have been used for hundreds of years for work and for transport. Mainly today they are used for leisure. These massive boats have giant sales, and are propelled by the wind. A Very popular thing to do in Lamu is to take a Dhow for a slow & relaxing sunset cruise. But the Dhow races are not slow or relaxing.

The local captains assemble a team of Lamu sailers who work tirelessly for a week to modify the Dhows to be racing machines. They add extra rods to allow for faster turns and increase the size of the sails to allow for greater speeds!

INSIDE LAMU PORT: How does Kenya's new deep container port compare with Mombasa and Djibouti ports

Kenya already has one deep-water port in Mombasa. Plans for a second one to diffuse economic dependency on Mombasa go back to the mid-1970s. However, it only materialised in March 2012. The occasion was marked when the then East African heads of states – Kenya’s Mwai Kibaki, Ethiopia’s Meles Zenawi and South Sudan’s Salva Kiir – laid the port’s foundation stone.

To facilitate safe evacuation of transit cargo to Ethiopia and South Sudan, the Authority has completed the geo-fencing of the twin Corridors of the Lamu – Garsen – Witu – Hola – Garrissa – Modika – Modogashe – Isiolo -Moyale and Lamu – Garsen – Witu – Hola – Garissa – Thika – Isiolo - Moyale.
