Bethal Mpumalanga South Africa - A small farming town.
Bethal is a farming town which lies 155 km east of Johannesburg in the Mpumalanga region of South Africa, covering an area of 51 square kilometres and home to a population of approximately 75000 inhabitants.
The town originated and was established on 12 October 1880 on an old farm called Blesbok spruit, and the Origin of the name: The Beth- comes from Elizabeth du Plooi, wife of the co-founder Cornelius Michiel du Plooi, and the – “al” comes from Petrus Johannes' wife, Alida Joubert.
The earliest Naudé settlers in the Transvaal were almost all farmers. Petrus Johannes Naudé and his large family, as well as other relatives, settled in Bethal in the Eastern Transvaal. Their original land was named Naudésfontein.
Petrus Johannes Naudé, great-great-grandfather's younger brother, demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurship and was the founder of Bethal.
The established town became a municipality in 1921.

2019 12 19 South Africa - Witbank to Sabie
New adventure began - South Africa! First night is in Witbank (Emalahleni), couple hours drive from Johannesburg. Witbank is industrial, coal mining town but was on our route and we could find there some accommodation for a night.
The proper adventure started following morning - we are on the way to Sabie driving through Drakensberg Escarpment. We have stopped in Doolstroom, small oasis with population of 600, but full of old-fashioned English pubs. Quite nice place to stop to stretch the legs plus they serve amazing shakes and biltong!
Then Pilgrim's Rest, another small place which is famous from 19th century gold rush. Town is filled with old corrugated-iron houses and apart small museum and some shops there is nothing else.
The compact town of Graskop is famous from its own Gorge with view of the Big Swing, the bungee jumping place. There is elevator which runs 51 metres down the sheer cliff. There is also waterfall which can be seen from the top as well as bottom of the Gorge. Quite nice place for a short walk.
MacMac Falls and couple miles down the river Mac Mac Pools is another attraction on our route. MacMac Falls tumbling 70m in two double streams with water rainbows, white spray and a deep, dramatic pool, this is what waterfalls are supposed to look like. The pools gives opportunity to swim and relax, but as we have been there just at site closure time there was no chance to swim for us :(
Sabie is a little quiet town with quite authentic South African feel with great dining options and accommodation. That was exactly what we needed after long day!
