NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE ROUND-UP
Hello NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE people!
It's been a while I know, but finally the NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE ROUND-UP video is here!
Using information that's been sent to me by all you lovely people out there, this is the video that catches all those comments and anecdotes and whatever else you wanted me to talk about, that I either missed or got wrong in the twenty four parishes of NORTH EAST DEREBYSHIRE!
In alphabetical order, I go through the district, from Ashover to Wingerworth and everything in between bringing the district to a close with all the extra information you lovely people out there have sent to me.
The long term plan for Derbyshire will see me hopefully begin AMBER VALLEY next year in early 2023, but for now, Derbyshire is on the backburner for a while as I concentrate on other areas.
I'll see you down the road.
Andy

BREADSALL: Erewash Parish #2 of 14
This is a picturesque old village surrounded by woodland with a population of 773, with a wonderfully active community with an array of social clubs, as well as access to something called the Greenway and network of paths for both walking and cycling
The village nowadays is relatively peaceful and only gets busy during some rush hour periods when drivers use the village as a thoroughfare to the northern tip of nearby Oakwood, and further afield, to areas including Hilltop, Morley, West Hallam, Heanor and Ilkeston.
The Harpur-Crewe’s were the estate holders here, it being founded in the early 1500s by Richard Harpur who was a solicitor in London. Henry Harpur was one of his ancestors, and he would marry Lady Jane Crewe, thus becoming Henry Harpur-Crewe. The botanist Joseph Whittaker was born here in 1815[9]
The village is a very popular location for retired people who want to live comfortably in their later years, while still in reach of Derby city centre. The physician Erasmus Darwin is buried here. One of the key thinkers of the Midlands Enlightenment, he was also a natural philosopher, physiologist, slave-trade abolitionist, inventor and poet.
All around the village you will find a number of these small green areas, known as “triangles”, and they make it pretty obvious you’re in BREADSALL.

RISLEY: Erewash Parish #4 of 14
Here’s a typical linear settlement, with houses clinging to both sides of a road. However, thanks to footpaths, it’s a circular walk today. Our first major landmark of note to pass is a hotel, and straight away we’re into a piece of history. Its chief builders were the Willoughby family. Perhaps the most famous resident of the village was Sir Hugh Willoughby. He was a navigator, who sailed in 1553, with three ships, in search of the North-east passage, but ended up frozen to death with all his crew in the following January.
As a linear village, there’s no real centre but you might possibly be able to define one by the location of three buildings - two of them are the church and school. The other is the village hall. Rush Meadow is literally yards away from that with a sign telling us that the name of the village translates from Anglo Saxon to “Rush Meadow”. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book as Riselia and Riselei. Rush Meadow is also believed to be the last untouched area of the original Anglo Saxon settlement.
The church building is over 400 years old. It’s a is Grade II listed building, built for Sir Michael Willoughby as a domestic chapel to the hall in 1593. Consecrated in 1632, its one of only six built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The Willoughby family’s coat of arms can be seen above the door, with the date 1593.
Next to the church along Derby Road is the Latin House, a fellow Grade II structure which was described by Pevsner as one of the finest buildings in the country. It was built in 1706 for Elizabeth Grey. The Latin House was part of the former Grammar School. It was built to accommodate pupils, a schoolmaster and an usher. The City separates Latin House from some more Grade II listed buildings, Latin College and Latin Cottage
There’s a story to tell here as well. After being lost for a time, a Lanx (A Roman plate) was found here, then lost, and then forged and sold to the British Museum. The fate of the original lanx is unknown. It’s just one of more interesting things about the parish of RISLEY.

Ashover - Peak District Villages
- Ashover . The ancient village of Ashover is a large, sprawling settlement of many parts and has a rich and fascinating history filled with remarkable characters.
Ashover is situated in the beautiful Amber Valley and nestles snugly in richly picturesque countryside almost in the centre of a vast bowl of land, with wooded slopes and rocky hills rising all around, and with narrow lanes leading like strands of a spiders web from the village centre in all directions.
Ashover is a huge sprawling parish of some ten thousand acres with numerous small villages within it's boundaries, and the richness of its diverse nature can be attributed to the parish's geological structure, where, as at Crich, an island of limestone rises from an encircling sea of gritstone.
The gritstone hills which surround the village must also have contributed to its independent character, for they isolated the village to such an extent that it was late in the eighteenth century before the first wheeled vehicles penetrated this part of the Amber Valley. For centuries until the first metalled road was driven into the valley, Ashover remained virtually a self-sufficient and self supporting microcosm of Derbyshire, rich in both minerals and lush pastureland suitable for dairy farming, and throughout its history these two occupations have provided the main source of Ashover's prosperity.

HOLMESFIELD: North East Derbyshire Parish #23 of 24
Now for a gorgeous little village and civil parish on the edge of the Peak District in North East Derbyshire. The penultimate parish no less in this district for us! The name means raised pasture-land and is of Norse and Anglo-Saxon origin. Viking influences are also evident with many road names suffixed by gate, the old Norse word for way.
It is well known for a regular farmers and artisan market held in the main village on various dates throughout the year although no markets have been held since December 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The markets are normally situated either at the Angel Inn pub or just next door at St. Swithin's Church Hall.
The parish includes a number of farming hamlets such as Millthorpe situated in the Cordwell Valley and has a number of narrow, tight, often windy lanes both within the main village and within the smaller hamlets, most of which are unsuitable for HGVs
Robert Murray Gilchrist, author of regional interest books about the Peak District, lived and died at Cartledge Hall and is buried in the parish churchyard. G.H.B. Ward, activist for ramblers' rights and co-founder of the Clarion Ramblers in Sheffield, was a Labour Party politician who lived at Owler Bar, a very important area here, at least traffic wise, out to the West
You can discover all about that and much more in this latest offering in North East Derbyshire – HOLMESFIELD.

Wymondham Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the East Anglian county of Norfolk, and just under 10 miles southwest of Norwich, is the town of Wymondham.
The first thing you need to know about Wymondham is its pronunciation. It is pronounced 'WIN-dum', so it pretty much rhymes with 'Swindon'. Now that you know how to avoid offending the locals, let's talk about its history.
Wymondham grew around a Benedictine priory founded in 1107 AD. Although the building was part-destroyed during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, the west tower remains intact, and to this day forms Wymondham Abbey, the Anglican parish church for the town.
Wymondham was granted a market charter in 1204 under King John. One of the most striking landmarks of the town is its market cross which was built in 1617 to replace a previous incarnation that was destroyed in the Great Fire of Wymondham in 1615. Standing on Market Place, it is a notable example of an English buttercross - a structure under which people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy and sell butter and other dairy products, typically in medieval times.
One notable building that survived the fire of 1615 is The Green Dragon. This pub on Church Street (seen at the 4-minute mark) dates all the way back to 1371.
Wymondham became a centre for woodturning, i.e. producing wooden objects on a lathe with rotational symmetry, e.g. chair legs, door knobs, spindles etc. From this it branched out into brush-making, with factories in operation up until the late 20th century.
The railway first came to Wymondham in 1845, linking it up with Norwich to the east and Ely to the west. Over the years the population of Wymondham has expanded steadily owing to its proximity to cities such as Norwich and Cambridge. It is also around 5 miles from the headquarters of Lotus Cars, who are based in the nearby village of Hethel.

LITTLE EATON: Erewash Parish #1 of 14
Something different for you today. I have no Wakefield videos ready for the next two Sundays as of yet, so in it’s regular place, here’s some more Derbyshire goodness, and this one and the next one come from the Borough of EREWASH! Myself and the good lady wife were in Derby a couple of weeks ago for an event, and I took full advantage!
There are 14 in Erewash, and this first one is situated on the former route of the old A61, which is now the B6179, just north of the Derby section of the A38. There’s a lot to talk about in this one, and I was helped in no small part by an amazing information board on the corner of The Town, right in the centre of the village
Many of the village's historic buildings are built of stone which came from local quarries in the 1800s. In late June/early July like many villages in Derbyshire, there’s a village carnival here which follows a week of events leading up to it. The carnival always concludes with a fancy dress parade from the top of the village at through the village and a small fair sets up, along with stalls, refreshments and a barbecue serving meat from the local butchers.
A well known and popular character from here is known as “Alice in the Bacon Box”, and there are two forms of railway history. It was served by a railway station on the Midland Railway Ripley Branch, and it had something called a Gangway, also known as the Derby Canal Railway – which was a horse drawn single track railway connected to the terminus of the Derby Canal.
This is the delightful LITTLE EATON.
