The ULTIMATE Travel Guide to Melbourne Australia

Melbourne is one of the world's greatest cities and yes, one of its most liveable. It is also one of the world's best travel destinations and it offers the visitor an amazing number of attractions. This video details how to get around the city, where to eat, where to stay, where to get great coffee (many consider Melbourne the greatest coffee city on earth!), what there is to do and see in the city and the best day trips outside of Melbourne.

I hope you enjoy this video and please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE if you do. More videos about Melbourne and Australia (and New Zealand) coming soon. Thanks!

VRBO Link:

I admit to having a bias about Melbourne as I was born here and spent the first 11 years of my life in the City. I visit often and know the city like the back of my hand (although I do admit to having a hard time keeping up with the many changes in Melbourne over the years).

Some of the many attractions discussed in this video include the Queen Victoria Market, Sporting Events (tennis, Formula 1, cricket and the magnificent Aussie Rules Football), the Melbourne Zoo and Sealife, art and architecture and the famous Melbourne parks. The attractions outside of the city include the Great Ocean Road, the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island (the Penguin Parade), Puffing Billy and the Healesville Sanctuary.

More about Melbourne:
Melbourne, Australia, stands as a vibrant and captivating destination that seamlessly blends urban sophistication with a relaxed cultural charm. Renowned for its diverse culinary scene, thriving arts and music culture, and stunning architecture, Melbourne offers a rich tapestry of experiences that make it an irresistible city to visit.

One of Melbourne's most distinctive features is its reputation as a food lover's paradise. The city boasts an eclectic array of dining options, ranging from trendy cafes serving up artisanal coffee and breakfast delights to upscale restaurants offering innovative global cuisine. Wander through bustling food markets like Queen Victoria Market, where fresh produce, local delicacies, and international flavors converge. The city's multicultural population is reflected in its dining offerings, ensuring that every palate is catered to.

Melbourne's artistic spirit is palpable, with a thriving arts scene that embraces both traditional and contemporary forms. The iconic National Gallery of Victoria showcases an extensive collection of art spanning centuries and continents, while the street art scene in neighborhoods like Fitzroy and Collingwood transforms the city's walls into open-air galleries. The Melbourne Arts Precinct, anchored by the Arts Centre Melbourne and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, serves as a hub for theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions, and other cultural events.

Sporting enthusiasts will find Melbourne to be a haven as well. The city is synonymous with major international sporting events, such as the Australian Open, one of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments. The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) holds a revered place in the hearts of sports fans and hosts cricket matches, Australian Rules Football games, and concerts. The passion for sports is deeply ingrained in the local culture, making attending a live event an exhilarating experience.

Melbourne's design and architecture contribute to its unique appeal. The city seamlessly integrates historic landmarks with contemporary structures. The Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases stunning 19th-century architecture. On the other hand, Federation Square's bold and modern design has become a meeting point and cultural hub. The city's blend of old and new provides an intriguing visual landscape for exploration.

Beyond its urban offerings, Melbourne serves as a gateway to natural beauty. Just a short drive away, the Great Ocean Road unveils breathtaking coastal vistas and iconic rock formations like the Twelve Apostles. Yarra Valley, renowned for its wineries and lush landscapes, offers a relaxing retreat for wine enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

#1 Rated Secret Hike Location in Wilson Prom U Must Do

An easy half-day walk for lovers of the gorgeous Wilson's Promontory. Beginning just inland of Darby beach, walk through coastal vegetation then descend to the secluded, magical Fairy Cove for a dip among the rocks! A 6km round-trip with some steep parts.
Many regular visitors to the Prom never do Fairy Cove because it requires a drive to Darby River (12km from the Tidal River information centre).
If driving, park at the Darby River (closer to walk) or Darby Saddle carparks.
This walk is quite achievable for children - not to mention rewarding. More advanced walkers may want to trek further to Tongue Point (map 18 on the Prom's 'day trips' brochure.
Be sure not to arrive close to high-tide when swimming may not be possible or advisable (it's a tiny beach).

Getting there:
Beginning from the Derby River car park (note: further north than the Darby Saddle car park), follow the signs to Tongue Point but at the 2.4km mark, take the sign-posted path another 400m or so down to Fairy Cove

Melbourne Day Trips: Wilson's Prom

During my four months in Australia, I took five day trips to popular destination outside of Melbourne. Out of the five, I definitely saw the most wildlife (wombats and kangaroos!) at Wilsons Prom. No trip to Australia would be complete without kangaroos, so if you are heading “down under”, I strongly suggest you check out Wilsons Prom!

Not far from Melbourne exists the incredible Wilson's Promontory.😍

Wilsons Promontory National Park, often referred to as The Prom, is a haven for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone seeking a tranquil escape. Known for its rugged granite mountains, lush rainforests, and pristine beaches, this park is a must-visit destination.

In this promontory, we discovered even the beautiful Squeaky Beach, which in 2024 was voted the most beautiful beach in Australia!🇦🇺

Located in Wilson Promontory, in this beautiful place you can find even many other lovely things to see, like Whisky Beach, Mount Oberon, the Dunes of the Big Drigt, and the Wildlife walking promenade, where you can see wallabies, kangaroos, wombats, emus, and many different types of parrots!
