Nijmegen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈnɛimeːɣə(n)] ( listen);[6] Nijmeegs: Nimwegen [ˈnɪmβ̞ɛːxə]), historically anglicized as Nimeguen,[7] is a municipality and a city in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is situated on the Waal river, close to the German border.
Nijmegen is among the three oldest cities in the Netherlands, and in 2005, celebrated 2,000 years of existence.
The municipality is part of the Stadsregio Arnhem-Nijmegen (Arnhem-Nijmegen urban region (neighbouring city, 15 km (9 mi) north)), a metropolitan area with 736.107 inhabitants (2011).

The municipality is formed by the city of Nijmegen, incorporating the former villages of Hatert, Hees and Neerbosch, as well as the urban expansion project of Waalsprong, situated north of the river Waal and including the village of Lent and the hamlet of 't Zand, as well as the new suburbs of Nijmegen-Oosterhout and Nijmegen-Ressen.

The first mention of Nijmegen in history is in the 1st century BC, when the Romans built a military camp on the place where Nijmegen was to appear; the location had great strategic value because of the surrounding hills, which gave (and continue to give) a good view over the Waal and Rhine valley.
By 69, when the Batavians, the original inhabitants of the Rhine and Maas delta, revolted, a village called Oppidum Batavorum had formed near the Roman camp. This village was destroyed in the revolt, but when it had ended the Romans built another, bigger camp where the Legio X Gemina was stationed. Soon after, another village formed around this camp.
In 98, Nijmegen was the first of two settlements in what is now the Kingdom of the Netherlands to receive Roman city rights.[8]
In 103, the X Gemina was re-stationed to Vindobona, modern day Vienna, which may have been a major blow to the economy of the village around the camp, losing around 5000 inhabitants. In 104 Emperor Trajan renamed the town, which now became known as Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum, Noviomagus for short (the origin of the current name Nijmegen).
Beginning in the second half of the 4th century, Roman power decreased and Noviomagus eventually became part of the Frankish kingdom. It has been contended that in the 8th century Emperor Charlemagne maintained his palatium in Nijmegen on at least four occasions. During his brief deposition of 830, the emperor Louis the Pious was sent to Nijmegen by his son Lothar I. Thanks to the Waal river, trade flourished.
The powerful Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor was born at Nijmegen in 1165. In 1230 his son Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor granted Nijmegen city rights. In 1247, the city was ceded to the count of Guelders as collateral for a loan. The loan was never repaid, and Nijmegen has been a part of Gelderland ever since. This did not hamper trade; Nijmegen even became part of the Hanseatic League in 1364.
The arts also flourished in this period. Famous medieval painters like the Limbourg brothers were born and educated in Nijmegen.

Wijchen is a municipality and a town in the province of Gelderland, in the eastern part of the Netherlands.
Number of residents per population centre per 12 December 2009:The population centre Woezik (3,820 residents on 1 January 2005) and the township Laak are statistically included in Wijchen.
Streets in most neighbourhoods are numbered instead of named. This is not common practice in the Netherlands, therefore the street numbers are included in the house numbering. E.g. someone living in Abersland, 11th street, house #05 will usually use Abersland 1105 in his address.
Parts of Wijchen Castle (Kasteel Wijchen in Dutch) date from the 14th century, but it took its current Mannerist form in the years 1609–1629. It is surrounded by a moat and used to serve as the town hall. Currently, the town hall is on the other side of the road, while the castle is only used for important meetings.
Valkhof Museum Nijmegen- Daytrip from Amsterdam
New Amsterdam Travel Video- Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands. It dates back to Roman times and many Roman artifacts have been discovered around the city area. Some fine examples are displayed at the Valkhof Museum, which is located next to Valkhof Park which sits upon a nice hilltop overlooking the Waal River. The museum is a great mix of art and archeology and the ancient pieces are a nice contrast with their modern art. In his Cool Collection II_Omina exhibit, Folkert de Jong juxtaposes Roman ceramics with his futuristic looking art works. Outside the museum's ultra-modern building are the medieval Barbarossa ruins and St. Nicolaas Chapel. Nijmegen is about a 1.5 hour train ride from Amsterdam.

Jujur aku baru tau ada kota ini waktu browsing destinasi wisata Nijmegen 😅. Yang pertama aku klik adalah Kasteel van Wijchen ini. Sebenarnya kastil ini adalah museum, tapi letaknya ada di sampingnya. Sedangkan, kastil ini justru difungsikan menjadi town hall. Explore kastil ini serasa masuk ke masa kerajaan lampau loh :)

The castle in Wijchen shown by 204 photos, with photos of details, the courtyard, the museum during the day of admission free , the castle garden and environment in the autumn and the castle in the evening with lighting. Every year in July almost 40.000 people are passing by this castle at the 4Days marches of Nijmegen ; now you get the opportunity to see more of this beautiful castle.
In the Castle there are the Council Chamber and a wedding room on the ground floor. The first floor is less in use and on the 2nd floor you will found the museum with a fixed and a changing collection of archaeological finds from Wijchen. In addition, there are exhibitions of contemporary art.
In 1392 the first mention is made of a castle in Wijchen, but it is unclear whether it was at the same location. At the location of this castle, Herman van Bronckhorst-Batenburg bought a ruin of a castle in 1535 In 1609 Princess Emilia, daughter of Prince William of Orange did buy the Castle and completed it. Emilia of Nassau was married to Don Emanuel of Portugal and the marriage was dissolved in 1925. Emilia died in 1926 in Switzerland.
In 1940, the castle was sold to Philip of Nassau, Lord of Grimhuizen bij Ginneken. The castle was inherited by the family van Oostrum and later on it came in the possession of the family Perceval and later again of the familyVan Swansbel. In 1771 it was in the possession of the family d'Osy. In 1863, the Castle was auctioned and bought by baron J.J.R. d'Osy. In 1903 the Lady A.W. van Andringa Kempenaer from the Hague was the owner. In the night of 5 on 6 december 1906 the castle was totally burned down caused by a chimney fire. Only the walls were still standing. At the urging of Jhr. Mr. Victor de Stuers the owner has rebuild the Castle under the management of architect A. Ludeweg from Nijmegen.
The rebuilding happened from 1907-1908. In 1926 the two cousins of the Lady, A.E. and R.C. Humalda van Eijsinga got the Castle by inheritance. In 1932 it was sold to the municipality of Wijchen. After restoration under the managment of IR. J.G. Deur the castle was taken in use in 1933 as Council House . That continues until 1981. Between 1933 and 1988 the Emilia-Gallery, located above the entrance, was inhabited by the fam. van Densen, Mr. van Densen was a well-known constable in those years. In 1995 a major restoration took place again and this time it was far-reaching. All the wooden major joists are replaced by steel and all wooden floor constructions by concrete. The visible outside is made in wood again, you can't see the difference if you don't know these facts. It is a fire safe Castle now with preservation of the original character. There are new modern toilet facilities in the basement, a lift to the museum at the 2nd floor and a glass wall to the open gallery in the courtyard to create a foyer , named: d'Osy galerij.(for many years this was the place for put away the bicycles of the officials)

Nijmegen is the largest city in the Dutch province of Gelderland and the tenth largest of the Netherlands as a whole. Located on the Waal River close to the German border, Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands and the first to be recognized as such in Roman times. In 2005, it celebrated 2,000 years of existence.
Nijmegen became a free imperial city in 1230 and in 1402 a Hanseatic city. Since 1923 it has been a university city with the opening of a Catholic institution now known as the Radboud University Nijmegen. The city is well known for the International Four Days Marches Nijmegen event.

7 cars of ICMm fly through the pedestrian crossing at Wijchen - Fly-by-
My final stretch of Friday's trip encompassed the only ICMm I captured, funnily enough. But it was a pretty spectacular one!
My final destination of last Friday was Wijchen, as I wanted to capture the TCS' Dinner Train on it's run to Nijmegen. I arrived a bit early however, and thought it would be nice to capture a DDZ at the station as well, as those regularly serve Roosendaal - Zwolle and vice versa as intercity sets. From time to time however, a VIRMm is deployed and even sometimes an ICMm. I was rather surprised though to actually encounter the latter, making this my only ICMm shot of the day!
I was hesitating at which angle I should take the shot, and in the end decided upon this angle. Kinda letting you 'decide', choosing that angle that sorta less resembles the shot I took a year ago at Nunspeet. The shot that's unanimously was decided by you guys as the most popular!
This was the end result, and I was quite pleased with the results.
