Lincoln, RI - Blackstone River Greenway #rhodeisland #railtrail #eastcoastgreenway
Anyone else experience magic while riding a rail trail?
Starting in Lincoln, Rhode Island - we bike along 10 miles of the Blackstone River Greenway up to Woonsocket and back. This route is part of the Blackstone Heritage Corridor up to Worcester as well as the East Coast Greenway stretching between Florida and Maine. We stopped by La Fruta Loca in Central Falls for yummy and decadent smoothies afterward.
Scrambling over the Rocks and Waterfall at Purgatory Chasm
Hike Purgatory Chasm with me through the Chasm Loop, Little Purgatory, Old Purgatory and Charlie's Loop trails. Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton, MA allows visitors to hike through a 70 deep chasm, scramble over giant boulders and rocks then wind their way through the hiking trails, some of which have small waterfalls. It is a great place to see a number of geologic formations. In 1919, the state declared the area a state park.
Trail maps are readily available at the visitor's center (bathrooms available) and near the beginning of the Chasm Loop trail head. Bring your lunch, as the area also provides for a number of picnic tables. Those with children should be sure to visit the playground, which is near the visitor's center.

Autumn Foliage Leaves in Sutton Massachusetts 2022 - with Millbury and Whitinsville
This video was taken on Friday October 14, 2022 - just about the peak of foliage season here in Sutton, as far as we can tell. Wednesday was absolutely spectacular, and then Thursday was fairly rainy, so now on Friday a portion of the leaves have fallen. There are still green trees, and some bare trees. I'd say at this point there is that delightful mix of color. Going forward I have to guess that we'll have more and more bare trees in the mix.
For this video we start on Central Turnpike going west, approaching 146 South. We take 146 South to Whitins Road which means we nip the corner of Whitinsville. At Vaillancourt Folk Art we turn right onto Putnam Hill Road. We take that up past the police station to the high school and turn right onto Boston Road. We next go left onto Singletary Ave and go up into Millbury. We head south again on Burbank, returning to Sutton. We follow Burbank down to Boston Road. We take that across 146 and over to Stone School and take that all the way down, across Central Turnpike, to the transfer station.
We've nearly covered all of the main roads in Sutton at this point. I think for the next drive we'll hit Purgatory Road and Uxbridge Road, and those will be the main roads. That still leaves lots of smaller roads to consider ...

Autumn Foliage Leaves in Sutton Massachusetts 2022 - with Whitinsville
This is week 2 of our Sutton Massachusetts foliage driving exploration. This video was recorded on the afternoon of October 3, 2022. For this video we began by going up Dodge Hill Road and looped around to the head of Boston Road. We then drove Boston Road (passing wild turkeys!!) to its end. We took Central Turnpike back east to the top of Mendon Road and drove that all the way down into Whitinsville. Then there's a bit of Whitinsville before we end.
There are more trees turning colors this week. Some sections of Central Turnpike are fairly fully turned, but other areas of Sutton are still mostly green.
If you feel a particular area of Sutton has foliage which will showcase nicely for our drive, please let us know!

Exploring Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Massachusetts in the Winter
January 28th, 2020, I was able to hike and explore the Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Massachusetts. Despite being January in New England, I still encountered several people during my time here. That goes to show what a popular spot Purgatory Chasm is, and now that I've been there, I know why.
Being in the Chasm is unreal. The sides are so tall and I was surprised to find several huge hemlock trees growing in the depression. It's so rocky here and shaded I didn't think larger trees would be able to grow here. Nature is so cool and never ceases to amaze me.
The end of the video at 0:00:38 was filmed across the street from the main parking area where there is an incredible coniferous forest and several picnic tables.
Thanks for watching ♫

Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park - Pawtucket, Rhode Island
The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor follows the Blackstone River Valley from Worchester, Massachusetts to Providence, Rhode Island. America's Industrial Revolution was born here with the creation of Slater Mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the country's first cotton spinning mill, powered by the Blackstone River. Slater Mill inspired other such water-powered mills in the valley and then across New England.
The rise of such mills began to transform the U.S. from an agrarian society to an industrial one, and eventually drew workers from all over the world.
There are a number of sites throughout the region associated with the corridor, including Slater Mill facilities themselves.
In 2014 the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park was established. It will include a number of sites found in the corridor.
The Photos (in order)
B04A0287 - Slater Mill was originally built in 1793 along the Blackstone River in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, although it has since had some significant additions
B04A0278 - Slater Mill
B04A0288 - Slater Mill
B04A0286 - Slater Mill and Wilkinson Mill
B04A0282 - Wilkinson Mill; Oziel Wilkison established a roling and slitting mill next to Slater Mill, and was powered by the same mill race; built in 1810, it built on lessons learned from the operation of Slater Mill
B04A0275 - Silvanus Brown House is a typical mid-1700s home that was moved to this site in the 1960s; it once housed the type of manual cloth-making operation that Slater Mill began to automate
B04A0294 - Valley Falls in Cumberland Township, Rhode Island was the location of more mills built along the Blackstone River Valley; mills first opened here in 1818, but they became major textile producers in 1839 when they were purchased and expaned by Oliver Chace; although the mills are long gone, Chace's company is today known as Berkshire Hathaway, headed by Warren Buffett
