今回の動画はフェファン島(秋島)のヌーカン村です。
言葉、建物、歌。チュークには本当に日本のものが色々と残っているんだなぁと改めて感じました。マダムが歌ってくれた歌は日本語ということは分かったのですが、発音が不鮮明だったりして何の歌なのか調べるのがとても大変でした。検索を重ねた結果、「にこにこのたね」という歌だということが分かりました。YouTubeにも一つだけ動画があったので、元の歌を聞いてみたい方は曲名で検索してみてください。
離島の多いチュークでは、ミクロネシア連邦の他州に比べるとコロナワクチンの接種率が低めです。現在、政府は離島へ公衆衛生チームを派遣し、人々へのワクチンの接種を進めています。大人への接種は昨年から始まり、２度の接種が完了している島もありますが、今年に入ってからは子供への接種もスタートしました。
今回はチューク環礁内のフェファン島(旧日本名：秋島)を中心とした島々にワクチンを接種しに行く旅に同行させてもいました。
この旅はダイビングクルーズ船であるオデッセイをチャーターし、４日間かけて行われました。オデッセイはワクチンを常時冷凍保存できる電力があるだけではなく、ベッドや温水シャワー、エアコンが完備された十分な広さの客室、温かい食事を提供してくれました。それにより、私も公衆衛生チームも適切な食事と十分な休息を取ることができました。もしオデッセイが無かったら、これらの環境は全く無い旅となります。オデッセイのキャプテン、クルーの皆さんには感謝しかありません。
また、撮影を許可してくれた公衆衛生チームの皆さんと離島の方々にも感謝を伝えたいです。ありがとうございました！
行く先々で「何のために撮影するんだ」と聞かれました。一番の理由はチュークではワクチンの接種率を高めるために様々な機関や人々が活動していることを多くの方に知っていただきたかったからなのですが、その他にもこの動画を見て現在国外に住んでいる離島出身者の方々に故郷を懐かしんでもらったり、撮影させていただいた人達に「私が映ってる！」と楽しんでもらったり、何年か経った後にこの動画を見返して喜んでもらえるような思い出になる動画を作りたかったのです。なのでちょっと長いなぁと思いましたがワクチンを接種しているシーンは撮影できた人全員が映るように作りました。

In Chuuk, which has many remote islands, the COVID-19 vaccine coverage is lower than in other states of the Federated States of Micronesia. Currently, the government is sending Public Health Team to the remote islands to vaccinate the population. Vaccination of adults began last year and two doses have been completed on some islands, while vaccination of children also started this year.
This time, I was able to accompany them on their trip to vaccinate the islands of Fefan and other islands in Chuuk Atoll.
The trip was made aboard the Odyssey that is diving liveaboard and took four days. The Odyssey not only had electricity to keep the vaccines frozen at all times, but also provided ample room with beds, hot showers, and air conditioning. And they also gave us hot meals. This ensured that both I and the Public Health Team were properly fed and well rested. If it were not for Odyssey's cooperation, the trip would be without these amenities. i can't thank the captain and crew of the Odyssey enough.
I would also like to thank the Public Health Team and the people of the remote islands for allowing me to film them. Thank you!
Everywhere I went, people asked me what I was filming for. The main reason was to let many people know that various organizations and people are working to increase the vaccination rate in Chuuk. But not only that, I also hope that this video will make people from the remote islands who are currently living outside of FSM nostalgic for their hometowns, the people I filmed to enjoy watching themselves in this video, and this video to be a memorable video that people will be happy to watch back on years from now. Therefore, although this video is a bit long, I have included everyone who was able to be filmed.

These photos are from my brief trip to Chuuk in July 2006, but I lived there with my wife from 1974-76 as a Peace Corps Volunteer and also conducted master's thesis research there in 1979. In those days, the islands were known as Truk, and were part of the U.S, Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. These photos are of the main lagoon island of Weno (Moen), and of my former home island of Tonowas (Dublon). Some of the people pictured I've known for more than 35 years. The Chuukese song Romonum I was recorded in the islands by the late David Fanshawe. See the other 50Fotos slideshows.

念願の外洋の島、第一弾はネマ島です。
環礁でもなく、大海原にぽつんと浮かぶ小さな島。なんといっても海がめちゃくちゃ透明でした！泳いでみたかったのですが、先に泳いでいたマイクが「サメめっちゃおるで」って言っていて、サメ嫌いの私は怖気づいて泳げませんでした。目の前にこんなに綺麗な海があるのに…もう二度と来れないかもしれないのに…。悔しくてネマ島を離れる時にマジ泣きしました。今でもとても後悔しています。
さて、ネマ島ですが、動画内でも何度も言っていますがとにかくゴミの無い、しっかり整備された綺麗な島でした。とても小さい島なのに６つもの地区に分けられていて、それぞれの地区に酋長(しゅうちょう)がいます。彼らの統率力と、島民の意識が高いからこそこの美しさが維持できているのでしょう。学校でもきちんと授業が行われたり、全員がマスクを着用しているなど、ダントツで「きちんとした学校」でした。子供たちは皆学校に行っているため、在島している間に一人も子供を見かけなかったのがちょっと残念(笑)
ちなみに犬は映っていませんが、いました。でも数はとても少ないと思う。猫は見なかったけど多分いると思います。

People of Nema Island
The first island in the outer islands which I have longed for is Nema Island.
As I said many times in the video, Nema Island is a beautiful island that is well maintained and free of garbage. It is a very small island, but it is divided into 6 districts, and each district has its own chief. Their leadership and the high awareness of the islanders are probably the reason for the beauty of the island. The schools were by far the most proper schools, with classes being conducted properly and everyone wearing masks. Since all the children were at school, I was a little disappointed that I did not see a single child while I was on the island. I wanted to play with the kids.
By the way, there were dogs, although they are not shown in the vodeo. But I think there were very few of them. I didn't see any cats, but I think there probably are.
And that's how our outer islands trip started. Next time, we will report on Piisemwar Island out of the three islands. Enjoy!
