Places to see in ( Wendover - UK )
Wendover is a market town at the foot of the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, England. It is also a civil parish within Aylesbury Vale district. The mainly arable parish is 5,832 acres (2,360 ha) in size and contains many hamlets that nestle in amongst the lush forest on the surrounding hills. It lies between the picturesque villages of Ellesborough and Aston Clinton.
In 1086 the manor of Wendovre was in the hundred of Aylesbury, with William the Conqueror as its tenant in chief. The parish church of St Mary is outside the town to the east on the hillside: a feature that is very common among towns with strong Celtic origins. There is a distinctive red brick, spired clock tower at the crossroads in the centre of the town that was built in 1842. The tree lined Aylesbury Street includes the 16th-century timber framed Chiltern House and 18th-century Red House.
There is still a row of houses in the town today, known as Anne Boleyn's Cottages. The town is the birthplace of Gordon Onslow Ford, British surrealist artist, and it is believed to be the birthplace of the medieval chronicler Roger of Wendover. The town is also the birthplace of Cecilia Payne, the astronomer who first showed that the Sun is mainly composed of hydrogen.
The town is at the terminus of the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal, which joins Tring summit level of the Grand Union main line beside Marsworth top lock. Disused for over a century, the arm is in course of being restored by the Wendover Arm Trust. Remote and rural for almost all its length, the canal attracts much local wildlife.
Today the town is very popular with commuters working in London. The popularity is due partly to the town's easy access to London by rail, partly to Wendover railway station, served by Chiltern Railways from London Marylebone via Amersham on the London to Aylesbury Line, and partly because it is so picturesque.
Facilities in the village centre include a Post Office Ltd, several hairdressers, a community library (run by volunteers), Whitewater's deli & cafe, Lloyds Pharmacy, and a charity shop. Wendover also plays host to the 'Coombe Hill Run' which usually occurs on the 1st Sunday of June every year. It begins and ends in the village and encompasses two very steep climbs up the Hill to the monument along with a very steep decline. Legend states that a boy from Wendover can only become a man once he has completed the course for the first time
By virtue of its geography, sitting in a gap in the Chiltern Hills and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wendover has much to offer both local people and visitors wishing to explore the local countryside. The frequent train service from London Marylebone makes it an ideal destination for a day trip to the country. The ancient Ridgeway National Trail, a highly popular 85-mile walking route that extends from Avebury to Ivinghoe, passes along Wendover High Street. Apart from the Ridgeway Trail there are 33 miles of public rights of way and bridleways criss-crossing the parish. These paths will take you over the open chalk downland of Coombe Hill, Buckinghamshire, home to Britains longest surviving geocache, with its elegant monument to the Buckinghamshire men who died in the Boer War, or walk to the pretty hamlet of Dunsmore in the spring and enjoy the carpet of bluebells, or enjoy the shaded woods on Haddington Hill and Boddington Hill, belonging to Forest Enterprise (known locally as 'Wendover Woods'). Mountain bikers make use of specially prepared cycle routes throughout the Woods, which also feature walking trails for walkers of various ability as well as barbecue sites and play areas for children. Close to Boddington hill there are the remains of an Iron Age hill fort.

Great British Market Towns- Berkhamsted
As we ease out of lockdown we drive through the historic town of Berkhamsted. Town and country provide plenty of interest and entertainment in and around Berkhamsted. The High Street is on a pre-Roman route known by its Saxon name Akeman Street.[6] The earliest written reference to Berkhamsted was in 970. The settlement was recorded as a burbium (ancient borough) in the Domesday Book in 1086.

Great British Market Towns- Saffron Walden 4K
Saffron Walden is a delightful medieval market town located in north-west Essex. Many wonderful independent shops and cafes nestle amongst a wealth of beautiful historic buildings. Archaeological evidence suggests continuous settlement on or near the site of Saffron Walden from at least the Neolithic period. It is believed that a small Romano-British settlement and fort – possibly in the area round Abbey Lane – existed as an outpost of the much larger settlement of Cestreforda to the north.

Wendover Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, and around 35 miles northwest of central London, is the town of Wendover.
The first recorded reference of Wendover dates from the 10th century where it is written as Wændofron. The name is Celtic in origin and supposedly means 'white water', in reference to the chalky stream that runs through the town.
In 1214 a market charter was granted to Wendover by King John. The town is located at the intersection of three roads leading to Aylesbury, Tring and Princes Risborough respectiveley. It boasts an impressive array of historical buildings.
On Tring Road are the thatched Coldharbour Cottages (seen at the end of the walk). These originally belonged to Henry VIII who was Lord of the Manor. He bestowed the manor to each of his wives including Anne Boleyn, hence they are also known as the Anne Boleyn Cottages.
On the High Street are buildings dating back as far as the 16th century. Of particular note is the Red Lion, a former coaching inn which dates from 1619. It is claimed that Oliver Cromwell spent a night here. Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, is known to have stayed here.
On Pound Street (at the start of the walk) there is a row of 17th century thatched cottages. These were gifted to the Wendover Community Trust by the Lord of the Manor Lionel Abel-Smith to commemorate the 1977 Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Also of note is the clock tower where the three main streets of Wendover converge. This dates from 1842, and was originally a market hall and gaol.
In 1799 the Wendover Arm of the Grand Junction Canal (now the Grand Union Canal) opened. This provided the town with a means to transport goods including coal, straw and timber to London and other destinations. In 1897 this branch of the canal closed. Five years earlier, in 1892, the railway arrived in Wendover courtesy of the Metropolitan Railway. Today it is situated on the London - Aylesbury Line. Trains to Marylebone Station take just under an hour, making Wendover a practical commuter town, whilst still retaining its historical charm.

Hiking Berkhamsted to Wendover / Coombe Hill - 15 miles - [4k]
A brilliant adventure in the ChIlterns AONB. I followed the Grand Union Canal from Berkhamsted to Cow Roast, then went via the beautiful Tring Park (following bridleways and footpaths). Later on, I joined The Ridgeway pilgrimage route & The Icknield Way. In this trip I visited Wendover Woods & Bacombe Hill Nature Reserve and the trip ended in Coombe Hill. I enjoyed hiking this route.
I created the route online and if anyone was interested in doing the route, it is linked below:
Happy to answer any questions.

We took the family off to Warner Brother studios near Watford and decided to take Bryan and camp for few days.
Our choice stop was Hill Farm as it had access to Toilets and showers band was in a quiet area just short distance from the Harry Potter tour. Great value at the time at £15 Pn and there were 6 of us.
Hill farm was a good site and well equipped, there are good walks into Wendover woods and the attractions there.

HS2 Construction - Wendover, Buckinghamshire - 2020-06-24
Footage taken on 24th June 2020.
Showing a Chiltern Railways train from Aylesbury to London Marylebone, heading towards Wendover.
Wendover is situated at the point where the main road across the Chiltern Hills between London and Aylesbury intersects with the once important road along the foot of the Chilterns.
HS2 will enter a 'green tunnel' (cut and cover method) to bypass Wendover from a cutting at the point where the work near the electricity pylons has commenced (at Wellwick Farm).
