Places to see in ( Welwyn Garden City - UK )

Welwyn Garden City is a town in Hertfordshire, England. It is located approximately 20 miles from Kings Cross, London. Welwyn Garden City was the second garden city in England and one of the first new towns.

Welwyn Garden City is unique in being both a garden city and a new town and exemplifies the physical, social and cultural planning ideals of the periods in which it was built. Welwyn Garden City experiences an oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb) similar to almost all of the United Kingdom. The town experiences warm summers and cold winters.

Welwyn Garden City was once well known as the home of the breakfast cereal Shredded Wheat, formerly made by Nabisco. The disused Shredded Wheat factory with its large white silos is a landmark on rail routes between London and the north of England. Welwyn Garden City's proximity to London makes it a convenient commuter town.

The 301 additionally connects both the nearby hospitals in Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City, while the 300 provides a direct link to recreational areas such as Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn Garden City and Verulamium Roman town in St Albans. Buses run every 15 minutes Monday-Friday, every 20 minutes Saturday, and hourly on Sunday. Additional bi-hourly service 314 is provided by Centrebus, connecting Welwyn to Codicote and Hitchin. The bus station is located very closely to the railway station too.

Uno buses serve the nearby towns of Hatfield, St Albans, Potters Bar, Hemel Hempstead, Watford and Barnet. Uno buses also serve further out into North London. Uno is the only provider in Welwyn Garden City to offer a regular double decker bus service, although not guaranteed, on the 601 service. Both the 601 and 653 also provide links to the University of Hertfordshire with the 601 leaving Welwyn Garden City station every 30 minutes on weekdays only and the 653 leaving every 20 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays.

The nearest railway station is Welwyn Garden City railway station in the town centre. Trains are operated by Great Northern and run every 20 minutes Monday to Friday south to London Moorgate and north to Hitchin and Stevenage, and every 30 minutes south to London Kings Cross and north to Cambridge or Peterborough with a weekend service of every 30 minutes on Saturday and Sunday south to London's Kings Cross and north to Cambridge. Welwyn Garden City is well-served by major arterial road routes, namely the A1(M) and the A414. The Great North Road also passes around it next to the A1(M).

Welwyn Garden City's Music Society gave its first concert in 1921 within weeks of the town's foundation; its choir and orchestra, led by James Ross, have performed a regular concert season in the town ever since. The town also boasts a Concert Club, which promotes chamber music recitals, and a Male Voice Choir. Welwyn Garden City Band was founded in 1934.

Stanborough Park - Welwyn Garden City - England

Stanborough Park, also known as Stanborough Lakes is a 126-acre park in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England.

The park has two lakes; one on the north side of the park and one on the south side. The sides are separated by a busy road, though they are joined by a tunnel for foot traffic.

This video features the south side of the park, only. As with many such lakes, they are the result of flooding former gravel pits to create lakes - often as nature reserves. The lakes are served by the River Lea.

The lakes are used for water sports, such as sailing and the south side in particular is hugely popular with anglers who generally go there to fish for carp.

At the far end of the South lake there is smallish nature reserve which is managed by the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Trust.

10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Visiting Digswell Viaduct (Welwyn Viaduct) near Welwyn Garden City in England [4K/HD]

So this amazing historic sight that towers over you, getting higher and high the closer you get! It is know as either the Digswell Viaduct, or the Welwyn Viaduct and at standing tall 100ft from the ground upwards, it's a sight to see. It took a while to build as you can imagine, and built between 1848 & 1850 although I feel they built it fast when you think about how they built it all those years ago, It opened officially on the 6th August 1850 by Queen Victoria.
The train station I got off at to go and see it was Welwyn Garden City, which takes about 20 minutes from Tottenham. The viaduct was designed by William Cubitt, who was also the architect for Kings Cross Station. Thomas Brassey was the engineer in charge of the project.
So now we have that facts, I want to say how I felt walking up to it as I knew nothing about the viaduct before I went to Welwyn Garden City. In fact I had been there a few times and didn't even know it was there! I was upset with myself as I would have wanted to see it years ago!
It is amazing, when you first walk up, it's so small the it feels like it crows around you like a big bear, but you are reminded that it is a tough piece of work because you can hear the metal at the top in the wind. The train ran over the top along the tracks and I couldn't help but wonder if the people on the train knew anything of this splendour that they are travelling over!

Is it worth a visit? Yes in my view but be warned, it stands there tall but you could walk past it and not know it is there as it does not shout at you, only waits silently for you to find it!
And you do have to look to find access to it like I did, which hopefully I helped with the route.

Places to see in ( Welwyn - UK )

Places to see in ( Welwyn - UK )

Welwyn is a village and civil parish in Hertfordshire, England. The parish also includes the villages of Digswell and Oaklands. It is sometimes called Old Welwyn to distinguish it from the much newer settlement of Welwyn Garden City, about a mile to the south, though some residents dislike the suggestion of inferiority or irrelevance that tends to be implied by the moniker Old and prefer Welwyn Village.

The name is derived from Old English welig meaning willow, referring to the trees that nestle on the banks of the River Mimram as it flows through the village. The name itself is an evolution from weligun, the dative form of the word, and so is more precisely translated as at the willows, unlike nearby Willian which is likely to mean simply the willows.

Situated in the valley of the River Mimram, Welwyn has hosted human activity since the Palaeolithic with stone tools from that era having been found alongside the river and further inland across the area. Settlement across the area seems to have become established during the Bronze Age according to various recovered artefacts and crop marks left by round barrows and burial mounds from that period.

Despite this long history, at the beginning of the 20th century Welwyn was regarded as a sleepy backwater. One writer wrote that Welwyn, a small town in the Maran Valley, can show little of interest beyond many quaint cottages, and the church.

Welwyn was noted for its congestion since the beginning of the 20th century and in 1927 got what is claimed to be the first by-pass in Britain. The A1 was upgraded to motorway standards north of Welwyn in the 1960s and in 1973 the motorway was extended south past the village, by-passing the existing by-pass.

Welwyn Garden City Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 20 miles north of central London, is the town of Welwyn Garden City, often referred to as, simply, Welwyn (pronounced 'WEL-in').

Welwyn is the second of two garden cities in England. The first was Letchworth Garden City, located around 15 miles to the north, also in Hertfordshire. Both towns (not actual cities, despite the names) share similar origins.

In 1898 Ebenezer Howard wrote 'To-morrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform' (later republished as 'Garden Cities of To-morrow'). In it he advocated the construction of a new kind of town combining the advantages of cities and the countryside while eliminating their disadvantages. Industry would be kept separate from residential areas, and trees and open spaces would feature prominently.

Work on Letchworth Garden City began in 1903. Having proven his doubters in the press wrong, Ebenezer Howard went on to purchase land in Hertfordshire that had been identified as a suitable site. In 1920 the company Welwyn Garden City Ltd was formed to plan and build the garden city. The first house was occupied just before Christmas of that year.

The layout of the town comprises of wide tree-lined boulevards with green spaces in the middle. The architecture is typically neo-Georgian, i.e. taking inspiration from the 18th and early 19th century.

In 1948 Welwyn Garden City was designated as a new town. This was part of a post-war scheme to rehouse those whose homes had been destroyed in the Blitz during the Second World War. Fortunately in Welwyn's case, much of the architecture had been established, so it missed out on the blocky mid 20th century buildings typical of other new towns.

Since its inception Welwyn Garden City has always attracted a strong commercial base. The head office of supermarket giant, Tesco, is located in Welwyn. Other companies trading in the town include Xerox, Roche and Ocado. It was also home to a Shredded Wheat factory from 1926 until 2008. For the benefit of those outside the UK or North America, this is a breakfast cereal consisting of one single ingredient - wholewheat.

Famous people from Welwyn Garden City include Nick Faldo, Lisa Snowdon and Alesha Dixon.
