Places to see in ( Bexley - UK )

Places to see in ( Bexley - UK )

The London Borough of Bexley is a London borough in south-east London, England. It has common borders with the London Borough of Bromley to the south, the Royal Borough of Greenwich to the west, across the River Thames to the north it borders the London Borough of Havering, the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and there is a small boundary with the unitary authority of Thurrock in Essex to the north-east. There is a border with Dartford borough to the east and Sevenoaks district to the south-east, both being in the ceremonial county of Kent. The London Borough of Bexley is within the Thames Gateway, an area designated as a national priority for urban regeneration. The local authority is Bexley London Borough Council.

Prior to the 19th century the area now forming the Borough was practically unoccupied: very few of the present settlements were mentioned in the Domesday Book, although the village of Bexley has a charter dated 814AD. Erith was a port on the River Thames until the 17th century; the opening of the sewage works at nearby Crossness in the late 19th century turned it into an industrial town.

Today's settlement pattern is the result of the gradual extension of the London influence. Until the 19th century it was an area with a few isolated buildings such as the Georgian Danson House. With the coming of the railways building began apace, although the area is still composed of many disconnected settlements, interspersed with area of open ground and parks. The London Borough of Bexley was formed in 1965, under the London Government Act 1963 from the Municipal Boroughs of Bexley and Erith; Crayford Urban District: and part of Chislehurst and Sidcup Urban District.

Bexley, lying as it does on the outer fringe of London, has many relatively large areas of open space. The ridge of higher ground in South London crosses the Borough from its high point of Shooters Hill, on the boundary with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, to end above the River Thames at Belvedere, where the land drops down to the old port of Erith. This high land, whose geology is the sand and pebbles of the Blackheath beds, and which results in heathland, provided the line on the old Roman road (Watling Street) ran between Crayford and Welling. The land falls away to the north of the high ground, across the Erith Marshes to the River Thames, which here makes a loop to the north at Crossness. There is further ridge of less higher ground from the west terminating at Sidcup.

Hall Place is a former stately home, today a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument, beside the River Cray on the outskirts of Crayford, south-east of Bexleyheath and north-east of Old Bexley. It is situated just off the A223, Bourne Road, south of Watling Street (A207) and north of the Black Prince interchange of the A2 Rochester Way with the A220.

The principal roads through the Borough include the A2 trunk road; the A20 (Sidcup By-Pass) which generally marks its southern boundary; the A207, which is the route of the erstwhile Watling Street; the A206 which takes traffic from Woolwich and Dartford; and the latter's newer counterpart, the A2016 through Thamesmead. There are also some Long-distance footpaths in the Borough: among them the Thames Path and the London Outer Orbital Path. Bexley Borough has joined with three other adjoining boroughs to for the South East London Green Chain linking green spaces.

There are three suburban railway lines crossing the Borough, all destined to come together at Dartford. The most northerly is the North Kent Line, then the Bexleyheath Line which runs through the centre of the borough and then finally the Dartford Loop Line which runs furthest south. In common with many other boroughs south of the Thames, Bexley has no London Underground lines or any other London-based transport methods like London Tramlink, the Docklands Light Railway or London Overground.

Hall Place Gardens

Hall Place house and gardens is a Tudor mansion built for a former Lord Mayor of London, beside the River Cray in Bexley on the east fringe of London. The oldest part of the garden, is north of the house, the front courtyard. It nestles behind wrought iron gates, believed to have been made by a former assistant to Jean Tijou, who designed the river gates for Hampton Court Palace. The lawn between the gates and Hall Place, has a circular flower bed cut into quadrants and rimmed by a low hedge.
The south front of the house has a rose garden which was planted in the twentieth century. The west front has a collection of clipped yews begun by the Countess of Limerick in 1932. A second group was planted to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. They’re shaped into ‘beasts’ like a set of Tudor stone carvings at Hampton Court. North of the topiary, there are herbaceous borders. On the the southern edge of the garden, great trees overhang the River Cray. Hall Place also has a rock garden, a sunken garden and a kitchen garden. Overall, the style of the Gardens is best described as Arts and Crafts. It’s a good choice, because the style looks back to the renaissance layouts of Tudor England, Holland, France and Italy. The management of the gardens has been improving steadily since they were taken over by the Bexley Heritage Trust in 2005.

Greenest Borough of London, Havering is very suburban and located on the eastern boundary of London

Places to see in ( Welling - UK )

Places to see in ( Welling - UK )

Welling is a town in the London Borough of Bexley approximately 10.5 miles east-southeast of Charing Cross, the traditional centre of London. Welling also lies within the historic county of Kent. The East Wickham part of Welling is probably one of the oldest settlements in this area. A Neolithic stone axe was found in East Wickham in 1910, and remains of Roman buildings were unearthed near Danson in 1989.

Before opening of the Bexleyheath Line on 1 May 1895, Welling was a village on the main road from London into Kent (Watling Street). It had been a traditional staging post for coaches; the presence of three inns along the main road is the result of that. Local legend has it that Welling is so called because in the era of horse-drawn vehicles, it could be said you were well in to Kent, or had a well end to the journey up and down Shooters Hill which, at the time was steep, had a poor road surface and was a notorious haunt of highwaymen.

However, local historians have recently concluded that the origin of the name is most likely from 'Welwyn' (meaning 'place of the spring'), due to the existence of an underground spring located at Welling Corner, or possibly a manorial reference to the Willing family, who lived in the area in 1301. Welling is home of the football ground of Welling United F.C. which is shared with the Erith and Belvedere F.C.

A large Russian gun is located at Welling corner. This Russian weapon is a 36-pounder carronade (calibre 6.75 inches - weight 17 cwt) of a type used during the Crimean War (1854 to 1860), displayed on a simple wooden replica carriage. The carronade was in service from 1780 to 1860 and is now on loan from the Royal Artillery Museum in Woolwich as a reminder of Welling's early association with the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, when huts at East Wickham were built as homes for munitions workers in the Great War.

Driving in the UK - London suburbs - Sidcup to Welling - 2022 [4K]

Join me for a ride through the suburbs of London on this crisp and sunny January afternoon.

The video starts with turning onto Rectory Lane in the suburb of Sidcup, then right onto Bexley Lane that turns into Foots Cray Lane after passing a 'mini roundabout'. After navigating a larger roundabout, we turn onto Penhill Road taking us to another larger roundabout. We exit onto Danson Underpass, taking us underneath the A2 motorway. We hit another roundabout, and turn left onto Danson Road with Danson Park and the Boating Pool to the left. At the intersection, we turn left again onto Park View Road taking us to Welling High Street in the Welling suburb. At the traffic lights, we turn right onto Upper Wickham Lane and this is where the video ends.

In England, traffic uses the left side of the road. Lanes do not necessarily keep to a standard width, and it is imperative to pay attention to oncoming traffic to anticipate not getting stuck as a road narrows down. Also, in many places parking on the street, even if the lane is not wide enough for other cars to pass, is perfectly legal. This means you often have to swirl out of your lane to pass parked vehicles, which makes driving in England quite tricky.

Episode transcription:

Shooters Hill is a district in south east London that comes under the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It connects with the north part of Eltham and the south part of Woolwich.

The name Shooter's Hill was derived during a period of time when they would practice archery in the Middle Ages. The meaning also doubles-down with the part it played in WW2. The high altitude made it ideal storage and use for ground-based defence guns to protect London by shooting down any aircraft which posed a threat.

Shooters Hill doesn't have a train station of its own but compensates with a variety of bus routes which offer convenient 10 minute connections to either Welling or Woolwich Arsenal stations. The best way to visit is probably by car.

Although it's devoid of a London Underground station Plumcroft Primary School decided they'd take a chunk of a Tube train anyway to remix into an outdoor classroom.

Shooters Hill Golf Course now sits on the crest of the hill along with the tennis club neighbouring the tranquil Eaglesfield park. During the warfare of yesteryear, the hill naturally became a camp to hold prisoners-of-war in a spot covered by the golf course today.

The dominating parkland on offer is the public open space of Oxleas Woodlands. As vast as this space is, it can very easily be missed since its access points are modestly tucked well away behind the residential facades of the hill.

Shooters Hill is elevated 132 metres above sea-level (the height of the London Eye) placing it within the top ten biggest bumps of a London topography map.

The crown jewels of these woods collectively is the gothic styled and fortress-like Severndroog Castle of 1784. It is classified as a 'folly', a building designed without any real purpose other than why not?

Despite this fact, it was then used as accommodation, manned by two people to observe air raids at 360 degree angles, 24 hours a day between 1939-1945. It then became fundamental to the survey mapping of England and measuring the proximity between London and Paris all by way of Triangulation.

Basically, by manually measuring and then observing where two lines of sight of a triangle cross, along with their angle, you could mathematically determine the measurement of the third triangular side saving massive amounts of work.

On this clear day, we can directly see Wembley Stadium with 100% of inner London sandwiched between us and with the provided binoculars we can even see Windsor Castle 29 miles away, well outside both the Greater London boundary and M25 belt.
