Sunset View at Sunset Park in Waynesboro, VA | Mountain Top View
Sunset Park Waynesboro @ Night
The City of Waynesboro closed its landfill in 2003 in compliance with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requirements. The 107-acre property includes approximately 17 acres of the closed landfill. The City aims to transform this area into a public space for passive recreational activities and develop a trail system for walking and mountain biking. A decade after the closure, the City began pursuing this goal by partnering with the Community Design Assistance Center from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University to create a master plan for 'Sunset Park.'
In recent years, the City decided to officially designate the property as a park, enabling it to seek grant funding for its development. In 2018, the City of Waynesboro received a VDOT Recreation Access Grant to improve the existing gravel road leading to the top of the landfill. Despite numerous setbacks, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the project is now back on track, with construction having started in 2023. State and Local Recovery Funds, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), are funding the improvements at the top of the old landfill. Below is a rendering of the work supported by these funds.
