Adventures: A Weekend in Northeast Ohio

We had time for one last weekend away before my friend headed back to China. This time, we decided to explore parts of our home state of Ohio.

A drive through Coshocton County prompted a quick stop at Roscoe Village, a restored canal town on the Ohio & Erie Canal. We then headed to Holmes County, the heart of Ohio's Amish country. Picturesque views and delicious local foods coupled with quaint small towns make for an ideal place to visit. We took a short drive through Cuyahoga Valley National Park for some breathtaking waterfalls on our way to the corner of the state; Ashtabula County. With its lakeshore and lighthouses, the Grand River wine region, and the most covered bridges of any county in Ohio, Ashtabula County had no shortage of things to see.

Let's Visit Napoleon, OH

In this video, I head over to Napoleon, OH, located in northwest Ohio about halfway between Toledo, OH and the Indiana-Ohio border along US 24. I check out the downtown area including the Henry County Courthouse. Later in the video, I head over to Ritter Park located just outside of downtown along the Maumee River.

Napoleon, Ohio

Napoleon is a city in the county seat of Henry County, Ohio. Established in 1832, and named for French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The Henry County court house is a historic court house. Designed by architect David W. Gibbs it was built in 1880 and is on the National Register of Historic places. The court house is topped with a 1880 statue of Lady Justice. On the outskirts of town at the side of Campell's soup plant stands a gigantic tomato soup can. It's a Icon to see while in the area. Historic downtown has some cute specialty shops, which I enjoyed shopping in. Many of the merchants were very friendly and enjoyed sharing information about there city.

map of Ohio

Ohio is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States. Of the fifty U.S. states, it is the 34th-largest by area, and with a population of nearly 11.8 million, is the seventh-most populous and tenth-most densely populated. The state's capital and largest city is Columbus, with the Columbus metro area, Greater Cincinnati, and Greater Cleveland being the largest metropolitan areas. Ohio is bordered by Lake Erie to the north, Pennsylvania to the east, West Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Indiana to the west, and Michigan to the northwest. Ohio is historically known as the Buckeye State after its Ohio buckeye trees, and Ohioans are also known as Buckeyes. Its state flag is the only non-rectangular flag of all the U.S. states.

The state takes its name from the Ohio River, whose name in turn originated from the Seneca word ohiːyo', meaning good river, great river, or large creek.[] Ohio arose from the lands west of Appalachia that were contested from colonial times through the Northwest Indian Wars of the late 18th century. It was partitioned from the resulting Northwest Territory, which was the first frontier of the new United States, and became the 17th state admitted to the Union on March 1, 1803, and the first under the Northwest Ordinance. Ohio was the first post-colonial free state admitted to the union, and became one of the earliest and most influential industrial powerhouses during the 20th century. Although Ohio has transitioned to a more information- and service-based economy in the 21st century, it remains an industrial state, ranking seventh in GDP as of 2019, with the third largest manufacturing sector and second largest automobile production.

The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the governor; the legislative branch, consisting of the bicameral Ohio General Assembly; and the judicial branch, led by the state Supreme Court. Ohio occupies 16 seats in the United States House of Representatives. The state is known for its status as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections. Seven presidents of the United States have come from Ohio. This has led to it receiving the moniker the Mother of Presidents Ohio's geographic location has proven to be an asset for economic growth and expansion. Because Ohio links the Northeast to the Midwest, much cargo and business traffic passes through its borders along its well-developed highways. Ohio has the nation's 10th largest highway network and is within a one-day drive of 50% of North America's population and 70% of North America's manufacturing capacity. To the north, Ohio has 312 miles (502 km) of coastline with Lake Erie, which allows for numerous cargo ports such as Cleveland and Toledo. Ohio's southern border is defined by the Ohio River. Ohio's neighbors are Pennsylvania to the east, Michigan to the northwest, Lake Erie to the north, Indiana to the west, Kentucky on the south, and West Virginia on the southeast. Ohio's borders were defined by metes and bounds in the Enabling Act of 1802 as follows:

Bounded on the east by the Pennsylvania line, on the south by the Ohio River, to the mouth of the Great Miami River, on the west by the line drawn due north from the mouth of the Great Miami aforesaid, and on the north by an east and west line drawn through the southerly extreme of Lake Michigan, running east after intersecting the due north line aforesaid, from the mouth of the Great Miami until it shall intersect Lake Erie or the territorial line, and thence with the same through Lake Erie to the Pennsylvania line aforesaid.

Ohio is bounded by the Ohio River, but nearly all of the river itself belongs to Kentucky and West Virginia. In 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court held that, based on the wording of the cessation of territory by Virginia (which at the time included what is now Kentucky and West Virginia), the boundary between Ohio and Kentucky (and, by implication, West Virginia) is the northern low-water mark of the river as it existed in 1792. Ohio has only that portion of the river between the river's 1792 low-water mark and the present high-water mark.

The border with Michigan has also changed, as a result of the Toledo War, to angle slightly northeast to the north shore of the mouth of the Maumee River. mapa de Ohio

American Winery and Anchor Meadow Farm - A Great Adventure Part 2

We left our Harvest Host in Hamburg, NY and passed through scenic upstate New York along I90, through Pennsylvania and on to American Winery in Wauseon, Ohio.
Then from Wauseon, Ohio, we headed west on I-90, passing through Indiana and Illinois where we took I80 to our next stop in West Liberty, Iowa for a quick overnight at Little Bear Campground. Back on the road the next morning we headed towards our next destination Anchor Meadow Farm, a veteran owned first generation farm, in Milford, Nebraska. This was a much anticipated Harvest Host location as supporting these businesses is as rewarding to us and the locations are varied.

We departed from our Harvest Host in Hamburg, New York, hoping that the clouds that appeared overnight would soon change to a clear blue sky. As we ventured along the picturesque upstate New York, the rolling hills painted in hues of gold and crimson greeted us, showcasing the first signs of autumn's arrival. Traversing through the serene landscapes of Pennsylvania, the changing colors of Fall provided a breathtaking backdrop to our journey.

Continuing our expedition, we made our way towards American Winery and Brewery nestled amidst the verdant fields of Wauseon, Ohio. The sprawling vineyards, adorned with clusters of ripe grapes basking in the warm autumn sun, exuded an inviting charm that beckoned us to immerse ourselves in the region's rich winemaking heritage.

Setting off from Wauseon, our path meandered westward along I-90, leading us through the enchanting woodlands of Indiana and the sweeping prairies of Illinois. Transitioning onto I80, we found respite at the Little Bear Campground in West Liberty, Iowa, where the tranquil rustle of leaves and a gentle breeze provided a soothing ambiance, offering a moment of solace amidst our adventurous journey.

Eagerly embarking on the road once more, we eagerly anticipated our next stop at Anchor Meadow Farm in Milford, Nebraska. As we approached the farm, the sprawling fields unfolded before us, adorned with an array of vibrant wildflowers dancing in the gentle breeze. We were embraced by the warm hospitality of a place where commitment to the land and the animals ran deep, a testament to the passion and perseverance of the veteran-owned first-generation farm. We cherished the chance to bolster such an exceptional establishment, acknowledging the profound fulfillment derived from nurturing these distinctive, community-centric enterprises during our awe-inspiring journey. Taking full advantage of the farm's produce shop, we procured delectable bacon and thoughtful gifts to bring back home. We had a wonderful overnight experience.

Switching NS interchange on the Adrian & Blissfield RR - 1999

PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION......

This video shows myself and my friend Steve Slayton at work as the engine crew switching the Norfolk Southern interchange in Adrian, MI. The interchange is set up like a switchback, but it is on level ground.

The man at the controls early in the video is yours truly. I was not engineer for the whole video.

The engine being used in this video is A&B 1751. It was originally buit for the Grand Trunk and ran as their #4545. 1751 is painted in the A&B's green and yellow lightning stripe paint scheme. It has been repainted since this video was shot.

The track being run on was built for Lake Shore & Michigan Southern, than part of Michigan Central, New York Central, Penn Central, Conrail, Lenawee County RR, and the line was bought by the Adrian & Blissfield RR in the early 1990's.
