Driving Around Small Town Waupun, WI in 4k Video
Filmed on Saturday, May 27, 2023, I drive around the small town Waupun, Wisconsin to see what's going on. I saw a prison across the street from fabulous houses! Strange...
Waupun is a city in Dodge and Fond du Lac counties in Wisconsin. The population was 11,344 at the 2020 census,
Waupun comes from the Ojibwe word Waubun which means the east, the morning, the twilight of dawn and dawn of day. Waupun was originally supposed to be named Waubun but the state of Wisconsin made a spelling error, and Waupun never bothered to change it.
Waupun was founded in 1839 by Seymour Wilcox, the first settler along the Rock River in what was then deciduous forested land. Wilcox chose the land on recommendation of John Bannister, the first surveyor of Fond du Lac County, who reported to the government office in Green Bay that the Rock River Valley was the most beautiful and fertile he had ever seen.
Wilcox surveyed the land himself in late fall of 1838, returning to Green Bay for the winter. In February 1839 he returned to the plot he laid out accompanied by two men, John N. Ackerman and Hiram Walker, who were interested in the powerful river and fertile land.
They quickly nailed together a shanty to four bur oaks and began building a suitable cabin for the Wilcox homestead. Leaving Ackerman and Walker to finish, Wilcox returned to Green Bay to bring his family to their new home. They reached Waupun on March 20, 1839.
The first town election took place in 1842 at the Wilcox home; eleven votes were cast. When the village charter was ratified 15 years later, 323 votes were cast in the first election. Because of the steady growth of the village, a city charter was granted on March 15, 1878. John N. Ackerman was elected as the first city mayor.
In 1851, the city was chosen for the State Penitentiary, owing to the abundance of limestone for construction. The main building, constructed in 1854, is still in use.
Today, about a quarter of the town's population is incarcerated at the Dodge Correctional Institution, John C. Burke Correctional Center, and Waupun Correctional Institution. These more than 3,000 people from around the state may not vote but make up a majority in two districts. This prison gerrymandering gives outsized electoral power to other residents in the districts relative to others.
In 1945 Waupun, was selected for the site of a German POW camp. Despite public opposition, the camp was constructed next to the canning factory, south of Doty Street. The prisoners were brought to Wisconsin to relieve deficits of manpower in the area factories and farms. There were about 200 POWs at the Waupun camp who were assigned to work either for Canned Foods Inc. in Waupun or Stokely Foods in Brandon, Wisconsin.
As of the census of 2020, the population was 11,344.
The racial demographics of Waupun were 80.7% White, 12.8% Black or African American, 1.4% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 1.3% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races.
The 2020 census population of the city included 2,867 people incarcerated in adult correctional facilities.
The per capita income for the city was $26,763. About 5.3% of families and 7.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.1% of those under age 18 and 7.8% of those age 65 or over. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Who made these statues in Waupun, Wisconsin? @wiscpoi was in Waupun to find out.
Wisconsin's City of Sculpture as it's called. There are 11 sculptures in the Waupun area.
Come take a look at a few of these statues of James Earle Fraser, Lorado Taft, and Clarence Shaler. We stop by the Heritage Museum, Shaler Park and Forest Mound Cemetery. We will also take a look at the memorial honoring the local veterans at that same park and the marker for the first home built in Waupun.

A little bit about Clarence Shaler:
He was born in Mackford Prairie, WI on May 29, 1860. After earning an M.A. degree from Ripon College in his native state, Shaler began as a manufacturer of umbrellas and other inventions in Waupun, WI in 1893. He subsequently made a fortune through his invention of vulcanized tire patches in the early days of the automobile industry. After retiring in 1928, he carried on his hobby of sculpting which had reached a professional level. On Dec. 16, 1941 he fell to his death from the balcony of his Pasadena studio.
A little about Chief John Big Tree:
He was born Isaac Johnny John, June 2, 1877 and died July 6, 1967.
He was a member of the Seneca Nation and an actor who appeared in 59 films between 1915 and 1950. He was born in Buffalo, New York and died in Onondaga Indian Reservation, New York. His interment was also there. Big Tree claimed to be one of three Native American chiefs whose profiles were composited to make the portrait featured on the obverse of the United States' Indian Head nickel, designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The other two chiefs were Iron Tail and Two Moons. Big Tree claimed that his profile was used to create that portion of the portrait from the top of the forehead to the upper lip. Big Tree also claimed to be the sole model for Fraser's most recognized work, the doleful End of the Trail. Both of these claims are broadly disputed, and Fraser identified other models. He also appeared on the March 1964 cover of Esquire magazine, in a pose commemorating the Indian Head nickel.

Wisconsin Dells in the 1960s and '70s
Take a trip back in time to the Wisconsin Dells before the era of the mega resorts.
In this video, we'll be taking a look back at some great old places from the Wisconsin Dells of the Past, including theme parks, attractions, restaurants, and a look at Broadway in Downtown Dells.
Relive scenes from Fort Dells, Xanadu, Storybook Gardens, and others from a time before Kalahari, Mt. Olympus, or The Wilderness had even been imagined.
This was a time when Sir Goonies was the king of the water slides, the resorts and motels were all independently owned, and Tommy Bartlett was filling the stands for Three Shows Daily - Rain or Shine! Stay tuned to see some great old places and unique attractions that are now long gone.
WE LOVE THE DELLS: Robin and Kevin have been visiting the Wisconsin Dells for decades - several times per year and in all seasons. We love the family-owned places that have been around for years, and always patronize the mom-and-pop shops whenever possible. We know the Wisconsin Dells remains a special place for all those who've visited through the years, and we hope that this video brings back some great memories!

map of Wisconsin
Wisconsin (/wɪˈskɒnsɪn/ (audio speaker iconlisten)) is a state in the upper Midwestern United States, bordered by Minnesota to the west, Iowa to the south-west, Illinois to the south, Lake Michigan to the east, Michigan to the north-east, and Lake Superior to the north. Wisconsin is the 25th-largest state by total area and the 20th-most populous.
Three of its largest cities are situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, these include the largest, Milwaukee, as well as Green Bay and Kenosha, the third and fourth most populated Wisconsin cities respectively. The state capital, Madison, is currently the second most populated and fastest growing city in the state.] Wisconsin is divided into 72 counties and as of the 2020 census had a population of nearly 5.9 million.
Wisconsin's geography is diverse, having been greatly impacted by glaciers during the Ice Age with the exception of the Driftless Area. The Northern Highland and Western Upland along with a part of the Central Plain occupies the western part of the state, with lowlands stretching to the shore of Lake Michigan. Wisconsin is third to Ontario and Michigan in the length of its Great Lakes coastline. The northern portion of the state is home to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
At the time of European contact the area was inhabited by Algonquian and Siouan nations, and today is home to eleven federally recognized tribes. During the 19th and early 20th centuries many European settlers entered the state, most of whom emigrated from Germany[15] and Scandinavia. Wisconsin remains a center of German American and Scandinavian American culture, particularly in respect to its cuisine, with foods such as bratwurst and Kringle.
The state is one of the nation's leading dairy producers and is known as America's Dairyland; it is particularly famous for its cheese.[] The state is also famous for its beer, particularly and historically in Milwaukee, most notably as the headquarters of the Miller Brewing Company. Wisconsin has some of the most permissive alcohol laws in the country and is well-known for its drinking culture.[] Its economy is dominated by manufacturing, healthcare, information technology, and agriculture; specifically dairy, cranberries and ginseng.[Tourism is also a major contributor to the state's economy.] The gross domestic product in 2020 was $348 billion Wisconsin is bordered by the Montreal River; Lake Superior and Michigan to the north; by Lake Michigan to the east; by Illinois to the south; and by Iowa to the southwest and Minnesota to the northwest. A border dispute with Michigan was settled by two cases, both Wisconsin v. Michigan, in 1934 and 1935. The state's boundaries include the Mississippi River and St. Croix River in the west, and the Menominee River in the northeast.
With its location between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River, Wisconsin is home to a wide variety of geographical features. The state is divided into five distinct regions. In the north, the Lake Superior Lowland occupies a belt of land along Lake Superior. Just to the south, the Northern Highland has massive mixed hardwood and coniferous forests including the 1,500,000 acres (6,100 km2) Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, as well as thousands of glacial lakes, and the state's highest point, Timms Hill. In the middle of the state, the Central Plain has some unique sandstone formations like the Dells of the Wisconsin River in addition to rich farmland. The Eastern Ridges and Lowlands region in the southeast is home to many of Wisconsin's largest cities. The ridges include the Niagara Escarpment that stretches from New York, the Black River Escarpment and the Magnesian Escarpment.
In the southwest, the Western Upland is a rugged landscape with a mix of forest and farmland, including many bluffs on the Mississippi River. This region is part of the Driftless Area, which also includes portions of Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota. This area was not covered by glaciers during the most recent ice age, the Wisconsin Glaciation. Overall, 46% of Wisconsin's land area is covered by forest. Langlade County has a soil rarely found outside of the county called Antigo silt loam.[76]
Wisconsin has sister-state relationships with Germany's Hesse, Japan's Chiba Prefecture, Mexico's Jalisco, China's Heilongjiang, and Nicaragua.
Climate
