Wasco, Oregon Ghost Town - Tour #2 PART 3 - Historic Abandoned Buildings in Oregon!
Join me as I take you on a tour of 6 historic ghost towns in Oregon. Each video will feature a tour of the town, maps to each location, and useful tips for a trip to visit.
In Part 3 we visit the historic ghost town of Wasco, Oregon. As of 2022, Moro’s population is approximately 419. The town of Wasco (established in 1898) supplied goods for the many ranchers and wheat farmers in the area. However, the Great Depression struck, technology reduced the need to human labor, and just like Moro, people moved away to other towns for work. In 1936, the railroad ceased operations in 1936 - the town entered into a decline and never recovered.

According to the State of Oregon:
“Ghost towns defy easy explanation.”
What is a Ghost Town?
1. Has a history of decline and loss.
2. Is of historic interest.
3. Can be “home to living people - thousands of them, even.” But not enough to “fill all offices provided for under its charter.”

The Sad State of US Passenger Rail: A Top 10 List That May Make You Cry (Or Enrage You)
Intercity passenger rail service: whether it's high speed or not, nearly every other economically advanced nation on earth (not you, Canada) has it better than the United States. And while we're waiting decades for California High Speed Rail, the Texas Central, Brightline West, and other vapor-rail, we have perfectly good track all over the country that could be used to provide high frequency, reliable service if we only invested economic and political capital.
This video is a review of the ten intercity passenger rail corridors in the US with the most train frequency, and in general it is not a happy story. Rather, it's a bit of an indictment on how far behind the U.S. has fallen, and all of the economic and quality-of-life surplus we've chosen to leave on the table.
Bonus: plenty of footage and a few thoughts on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and how we managed to build a relatively frequent and reliable rail service in what's kind of an unlikely place.
Services discussed herein (Amtrak and other):
- The Empire Service (New York-Albany)
- CalTrain
- The Hartford Line (Hartford-New Haven)
- MetroLink
- Pacific Surfliner
- Keystone Service
- Lincoln Service
- Northeast Corridor, incl NE Regional, Acela, Palmetto, Silver Star, Silver Meteor, Carolinian, Cardinal, Crescent
- The Downeaster
- The Hiawatha
- Capitol Corridor (Oakland-Sacramento)
- Altamont Corridor Exptress (San Jose-Stockton)
- San Joaquins (Stockton-Bakersfield)
- Brightline and Tri Rail (Miami)
- Sonoma-Marin Rail Transit

White River Falls State Park (Wasco County, Oregon)
Central Oregon's White River Falls plunges 90' over a basalt shelf, testament to the violent geological forces that carved the region millions of years ago. An overlook is a short walk from the parking area.
A steep, rough .7-mile trail takes hikers deep into the canyon to the historic hydroelectric power plant at the base of the falls, then on to Lower White River Falls. One of the first hydroelectric power plants in Oregon, it supplied electricity to Wasco and Sherman Counties from 1910 until the completion of The Dalles Dam in 1960.
The park is open year-round, though the main parking lot and flush restroom close during winter. Spring is the best time to see the waterfall's thunderous flow; by fall it slows to a few trickles. In summer, the tranquil pool and sandy beach below the hydroelectric plant is popular for picnicking and swimming (no lifeguard).
