WHANGANUI Top 29 Tourist Places | Whanganui Tourism | NEW ZEALAND

Whanganui (Things to do - Places to Visit) - WHANGANUI Top Tourist Places

City in the North Island, New Zealand

Whanganui also spelled Wanganui, is a city in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand.
The city is located on the west coast of the North Island at the mouth of the Whanganui River, New Zealand's longest navigable waterway.

Top 10 Things To Do in WHANGANUI!

Wondering what to do when you're in Whanganui? Here are ten of my favourite activities that you can enjoy while you're in 'The River City'.

The heart of Whanganui is the Whanganui River, and it's the perfect place to start your exploration. Try renting a couple of electric bicycles and cycling past the beautiful Upokangoro bridge to Mosquito Point, the best place to swim in the river. If you don't feel like getting wet, try taking a ride on the Waimarie - New Zealand's only remaining coal powered paddle steamer.

Another iconic location in Whanganui is the Durie Hill Memorial Tower and Elevator. Take a walk through the long tunnel that leads to the elevator, ride up and then enjoy the views from the tower!

Next, spend some time in Rotokowau / Virgina Lake Reserve, where you can feed the ducks or take a look at the Winter Gardens.

If it's a Saturday when you're visiting, be sure to experience the River Traders Market where you'll find food stalls, crafts and live music every weekend. The market is also a good place to set off from on a tour of Whanganui's many murals and street art.

A little outside of town you can find the extensive Paloma Gardens or the fully predator fenced Bushy Park, depending on whether you prefer your nature wild or tamed.

Whanganui has lovely black sand beaches to visit too - try the Castlecliff Beach in the suburb of the same name, or drive a little further to Kai Iwi Beach, with its impressive sandstone cliffs.

Last up, spend an afternoon or an evening in the Drews Avenue precinct with its colourful buildings, streetside seating, gardens and cafes. Drews Avenue is also where you'll find my favourite bar in Whanganui - Porridge Watson!

00:32 cycle and swim the Whanganui river

Why Whanganui is New Zealand's most underrated city

Whanganui is a mix between Amsterdam and Napier, yet it's surprisingly off the radar for many holidaymakers.

Some of the highlights include the Paloma Gardens, the Durie Hill elevator, New Zealand's only vintage coal-fired paddle steamer and even the countries best children's playground.
