Top 10 Best Hotels to Visit in Paterson, New Jersey | USA - English

Paterson, city, seat (1837) of Passaic county, northeastern New Jersey, U.S., situated on the Passaic River, 11 miles (18 km) northwest of New York City. It was founded after the American Revolution by advocates of American industrial independence from Europe (including the statesman Alexander Hamilton) who saw the Great Falls of the Passaic, which drop 70 feet (21 metres), as the best potential industrial site on the Atlantic Seaboard. Paterson was one of the first planned industrial cities in the United States. The enterprise was chartered by the New Jersey legislature in 1791 as the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures (SUM); the city was named for Governor William Paterson, one of the framers of the U.S. Constitution.
A successful enterprise, SUM ultimately sold waterpower and building space to private manufacturers. The earliest industries were cotton mills (1794), and in 1828 Paterson mechanics joined mill workers in the first recorded sympathy strike in the United States. Samuel Colt produced his first revolvers at the Old Gun Mill (preserved) in 1836. By 1837, when the locomotive industry was established, machine manufacturing had become important. Paterson was producing four-fifths of all locomotives made in the United States by the early 1880s. The silk industry was introduced in 1838, which led to it being named “silk city”; linen thread manufacture began in 1864. By the 1880s Paterson was home to more than one-third of all silk factories in the United States. The city was the scene of many labour disputes, but by the mid-20th century it had become a centre of widely diversified industrial activity. Modern manufactures include textiles, machinery, machine tools, plastics, leather goods, cosmetics, packaging, and chemicals.

3 Scenic Places to Visit in Paterson NJ
Hi folks, on today’s episode we’re going to check out one of the oldest cities in the United States. It’s located right here in Passaic county, Passaic river passes through this city and it was nicknamed “Silk City”......Have you figured out where we’re heading to today?
That’s right...We’re going to visit Paterson on today’s episode of Skylands.
Paterson, named after the statesman and Governor William Paterson, was once a bustling, vibrant city. In 1792, Alexander Hamilton, formed an investment group called the Society of Useful Manufactures that invested in the industrial birth of this city.
Fun Fact: Paterson is often referred to as the cradle of the Industrial Revolution in America.
Hamilton believed that America needed to reduce its dependence on foreign goods and should develop its own industries. These industries developed in Paterson were powered by the 77 ft Great Falls coupled with a system of water raceways. Originally, the Falls powered a few mills and manufacturing structures associated with the textile industry then the firearms, silk and railroad manufacturing industries. It was said that in the later half of the 18th century, silk production was the dominant industry and that earned Paterson, the nickname “Silk City.”
Paterson became a place where immigrants would come to work; they made up most of the industries’ workforce. In 1913, the Paterson’s silk and textile workers went on strike; protesting the poor working conditions, long work hours, low wages and child labor. During this 6 month strike, 1850 people were arrested and jailed. This strike lasted approximately 6 months but it failed to meet all the demands.
In 1932, the city of Paterson constructed the Hinchliffe Stadium;an Art deco concrete stadium. It was the home of the New York Black Yankees and Newark Eagles. The Hinchliffe stadium was one of the few stadiums where black people were allowed to play professional baseball.
Garret Mountain, a 568 acre park, is a National Landmark in New Jersey. This park is the county’s most popular recreational area, providing visitors from the tri-state area with numerous activities to do. Some include; grass fields for picnics and games, multiple walking/hiking trails, Barbour’s Pond for fishing and an Equestrian center with horseback riding lessons.
Fun Fact: did you know that Garret Mountain is a stop-over point for migrating songbirds, warblers, orioles, sparrows and thrushes. Birdwatchers from the tri-state area come here to this hotspot to observe the different species of birds along the trails.
Standing tall at 70 feet, Lambert Tower is situated within Garret Mountain Reservation. It was built in 1896 by a silk mill entrepreneur named Catholina Lambert. This structure was built to be reminiscent of the castles in Great Britain where Catholina Lambert spent most of his childhood.
Paterson fell into decline Post World War ll; the city suffered high unemployment rates and Red-lining. Businesses closed due to competition from the malls in Paramus and Wayne. Other contributing factors include several fires and natural disasters that struck the downtown area over the last few decades.

Monks Cemetery:
Earlier this year we visited Wanaque to tell the tale of Midvale and the Train Station. This time we fill in some gaps and take you back in time to the formation of the Wanaque Reservoir.
Enter the 1900's a time where Blacksmiths, Tannerys, and Mills stood throughout Ringwood Avenue. Ringwood's lakes were just Tices Pond and Wanaque Reservoir was the Wanaque River. Deep under the waters of the reservoir, the true history of Wanaque awaits.
The construction of the reservoir started in the 1920s and took about 10 years to complete.
Furnace Street in Wanaque ends in a dam on one end but did you know that Furnace street went further!? Yup! Furnace Street leads right to the Ryerson Freedom furnace, which is now underwater. This furnace was used in the early iron production from the nearby mines.
The Wanaque Paper Mill, remnants of the ancient Iron Furnaces, cemeteries, homesteads, and railroads, were all either destroyed or submerged in the forming of the Reservoir. That's right, many of the oldest graves found around town were moved from their original resting ground, which is now deep underwater.
Fun fact: One cemetery still remains on the inaccessible Wanaque Reservoir lands. You can find the location on Google maps.
If you're interested in discovering more about the Monks Cemetary check the link in the description below.
Here is an old map showing the changes that took place once the Wanaque river was dammed to form the reservoir. Notice the original location of these 4 family cemeteries: Board's, Browns, Erskine, and Ryerson.
Forming the Reservoir took a toll, displacing 70 homes, two major employers, the DuPont factory, The Paper Mill, 4 cemeteries, and 256 bodies were moved to create it!
Speaking of moving bodies, Did you know that the earliest settlers in the area were the Lenni Lenape Native American tribe and there are historical mentions of early white settlers unknowingly moving Indian headstones from Indian burial ground on the Meadowbrook Estates on Conklintown road!
Some of the earliest names of 'Dutch' settlers were: the Beams, Sloats, Van Dines, Vreelands, and Lines. The Beams can be dated back somewhere in the early 1700s and, lived around Chestnut Street! In fact, the Beam family grave markers still stand at the Midvale Cemetery.
