Visit East Croatia: Slavonia - Osijek, Vukovar, Vinkovci, Dakovo, Slavonski Brod

East Croatia is easily forgotten by many, including tourists and locals. Join us on this trip where we explored the cities of Slavonia. We found many interesting places, such as Croatian Sahara, and magnificent cathedrals. The preserved fortress ruins in different cities brings us back in history. Going up the Vukovar Water Tower taught us a valuable lesson in Croatia's fight for independence and yet enjoy a marvellous view at the same time.

Other than the sights, we share our accommodation and some restaurants where we enjoyed the food.

Vukovar - Top 10 Attractions

While in Vukovar, the most visitors stop by the memorials from the Croatian War of Independence. However, this town offers many other attractions and the aim of this video is to give ideas of what to include in a longer tour of Vukovar.

Coming from Serbia, I found it to be important to visit the Danube town of Vukovar, a town that was just about obliterated during the 3 month Siege of Vukovar in 1991. This town saw some serious devastation and death at the start of the Yugoslav Wars and I wanted to see for myself some of the things that happened. Throughout the region, you can see buildings with bullet holes and cannon holes including the Vukovar water tower or Vukovarski vodotoranj.

Next day, I set off for the capital city of Zagreb where I was once again, welcomed with rain and cold weather, the third capital city where it rained miserably. But when it cleared up the next day, I had a good opportunity to walk around and enjoy the city. Zagreb doesn't usually get much praise in comparison to Croatia's cities on the coast, but it's a beautiful cosmopolitan city with gorgeous buildings and city center.

Next day, I set off for Slovenia for 2 week before I made a grand return to explore Croatia's infamous coastline. :)

Vukovar city tour , Croatie in Ultra 4K

This video has two parts.
The first part reminds us of the Vukovar massacre also known as the Vukovar hospital massacre or the Ovčara massacre, was the murder of prisoners of war and Croatian civilians by Serbian paramilitaries, to whom they had been handed over by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), to the Ovčara farm. southeast of Vukovar on November 20, 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence. You will see a wheel in red that spins with the names of the deceased people. The pandemic is difficult, but there are people in history who have not had it easy to defend their land.
The second part shows you that Vukovar has turned the page and grown over time.

A quick visit in Vukovar, Croatia

*Taken from Wikipedia:*
The Battle of Vukovar was an 87-day siege of Vukovar in eastern Croatia by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), supported by various paramilitary forces from Serbia, between August and November 1991. Before the Croatian War of Independence the Baroque town was a prosperous, mixed community of Croats, Serbs and other ethnic groups. As Yugoslavia began to break up, Serbia's President Slobodan Milošević and Croatia's President Franjo Tuđman began pursuing nationalist politics. In 1990, an armed insurrection was started by Croatian Serb militias, supported by the Serbian government and paramilitary groups, who seized control of Serb-populated areas of Croatia. The JNA began to intervene in favour of the rebellion, and conflict broke out in the eastern Croatian region of Slavonia in May 1991. In August, the JNA launched a full-scale attack against Croatian-held territory in eastern Slavonia, including Vukovar.

Vukovar was defended by around 1,800 lightly armed soldiers of the Croatian National Guard (ZNG) and civilian volunteers, against as many as 36,000 JNA soldiers and Serb paramilitaries equipped with heavy armour and artillery. During the battle, shells and rockets were fired into the town at a rate of up to 12,000 a day.[4] At the time, it was the fiercest and most protracted battle seen in Europe since 1945, and Vukovar was the first major European town to be entirely destroyed since the Second World War.[5][6] When Vukovar fell on 18 November 1991, several hundred soldiers and civilians were massacred by Serb forces and at least 20,000 inhabitants were expelled.[7] Overall, around 3,000 people died during the battle. Most of Vukovar was ethnically cleansed of its non-Serb population and became part of the self-declared proto-state known as the Republic of Serbian Krajina. Several Serb military and political officials, including Milošević, were later indicted and in some cases jailed for war crimes committed during and after the battle.

The battle exhausted the JNA and proved a turning point in the Croatian War of Independence. A cease-fire was declared a few weeks later. Vukovar remained in Serb hands until 1998, when it was peacefully reintegrated into Croatia with the signing of the Erdut Agreement. It has since been rebuilt but has less than half of its pre-war population and many buildings are still scarred by the battle. Its two principal ethnic communities remain deeply divided and it has not regained its former prosperity.

Aerial view - Walkaround : Vukovar : Water Tower / War Memorial Centre - Croatia Hrvatska : PART 19

Vukovar is a city in Croatia, in the eastern region of Slavonia. It contains Croatia's largest river port, located at the intersection / confluence of the Vuka and the Danube and has a population of about 24,000.

According the Memorial Centre for the Homeland War website what’s known as “The Public Institution”, takes care of maintaining the memory of the Homeland War Memorial, preserving the sites and educating the students about the historical importance of the war events.
Preservation of memories is vital for better understanding of past events and learning from them in order to fight for human dignity and social justice. Institution’s activities include education, commemoration, documentation and research.
It consists primarily of a large selection of open-air displays of tanks and other armoured vehicles, missile launchers, artillery, planes, fortifications and such like, but also has two indoor exhibitions.

Vukovar water tower is a water tower in the Croatian city of Vukovar. It is one of the most famous symbols of Vukovar and the suffering of the city and the country in the Battle of Vukovar and the Croatian War of Independence, when the water tower and the city itself were largely destroyed by the Yugoslav - Serbian forces.
The Vukovar Water Tower was built from 1963 to 1968 on Vukovar’s highest point, Najpar Garden, what was then known as a public garden and an excursion site at the entrance to the settlement Mitnica. This tower stands tall at 156.33 meters (513 ft) above sea level and 50.33 meters (165 ft) above ground level.
During the Homeland War and the 87-day siege of Vukovar, it suffered 640 intentional missile attacks, nonetheless, it stood tall defying all attempts of destruction.
In 1991, during the siege of Vukovar, the enemy persistently targeted the Croatian flag. However, every night the defenders placed a new flag on the top of the water tower, thus giving the people of Vukovar new hope and additional strength every morning.
